Salvador, Bahia - Saints in Procession | Santos em Procissão [EN/PT]

The last time we traveled to Bahia, Brazil, years before the pandemic, we had an unforgettable surprise when we witnessed a procession with various images of saints in the famous Pelourinho, in the center of the city of Salvador.

A última vez que viajamos para a Bahia, anos antes da pandemia, tivemos uma surpresa inesquecível ao presenciarmos uma procissão com várias imagens de santos no famoso Pelourinho, no centro de Salvador.

To avoid getting too hot, we woke up very early to visit the city, unaware that we would encounter such an apparently important religious celebration. It all started when we saw people setting off fireworks, announcing with much noise and smoke what was to come.

Para não arriscar pegar muito calor, acordamos bem cedo para visitar a cidade, não sabíamos que iríamos encontrar uma celebração religiosa aparentemente tão importante. Tudo começou quando vimos pessoas soltando fogos, anunciando com muito barulho e fumaça o que estava por vir.

Soon the procession arrived, with people carrying various images of saints, entering the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Blacks. I read that during the time of slavery, most churches only allowed white people to enter, and that brotherhoods of enslaved people built their own churches, usually in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, not only in Salvador but in several Brazilian cities, including São Paulo, where I live.

Logo a procissão chegou, com pessoas carregando várias imagens de santos, entrando na Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos. Li que no tempo da escravidão a maioria das igrejas só permitiam a entrada dos brancos e que as irmandades de pessoas escravizadas construíam suas próprias igrejas, geralmente em homenagem à Nossa Senhora do Rosário, não só em Salvador mas em várias cidades brasileiras, inclusive São Paulo, onde moro.

There were several images of saints being carried, apparently from other churches in the vicinity; the historic center of Salvador has many churches nearby. The city was the first capital during the colonial period of Brazil, even before Rio de Janeiro, from where I shared photos of the Outeiro da Glória, another very beautiful old church.

Eram várias imagens de santos sendo carregadas, aparentemente vinham de outras igrejas da redondeza, o centro histórico de Salvador tem muitas igrejas próximas. A cidade foi a primeira capital na época do Brasil colônia, antes mesmo do Rio de Janeiro, de onde compartilhei fotos do Outeiro da Glória, outra igreja bem antiga e bonita.

Despite what I drew here in Painting of a saint with birds flying, I am not Catholic, but I recognized some images. In the photo above, we see in the center the statue of Our Lady of Aparecida, patron saint of Brazil, covered with the typical blue mantle and crown.

Apesar do que desenhei aqui em Pintura de santo com pássaros voando, não sou católico mas reconheci algumas imagens, na foto acima vemos ao centro a estátua de Nossa Senhora Aparecida, padroeira do Brasil, coberta com o típico manto azul e a coroa.

Another easily recognizable image was that of Saint George on his horse. The saint is very popular in Brazil, where syncretism with African religions also considers him a representation of the orisha Ogun.

Outra imagem fácil de reconhecer foi a do São Jorge, em cima de seu cavalo. O santo é muito popular no Brasil onde o sincretismo com as religiões africanas também é considerado como uma representação do orixá Ogum.

Witnessing this procession was a pleasant surprise. We don't know much about the event, but when we took the photos it was in the month close to Saint George's Day, celebrated on April 23rd, and his visit to the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary may signify something connected to Afro-Brazilian culture, as is the entire city of Salvador, after all.

Presenciar esta procissão foi uma grata surpresa, não sabemos muito sobre o evento, mas qdo tiramos as fotos era no mês próximo ao Dia de São Jorge, comemorado em 23 de abril, e sua visita à Igreja da Nossa Senhora do Rosário pode significar algo ligado à cultura afro-brasileira, aliás, como toda a cidade de Salvador, afinal de contas.
