Fairy Tales Between Timber Frames and Rocks 🚎 Märchen zwischen Fachwerk und Felsen (en/de) #65

Are Germany's motorhome stopovers really as overcrowded as people often claim?

It was a question that had been on my mind for quite some time. Statistics point to a continuing camping boom, and social media is full of stories about packed stopovers and long waiting lists. So I decided to find out for myself. I deliberately avoided the well-known hotspots along the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts. Instead, I headed for a region that attracts far less attention from tourists: the Teutoburg Forest and the surrounding low mountain ranges.

What I did not know at the time was that the first days of this journey would lead me to charming timber-framed towns, mysterious rock formations, and a number of memorable encounters. Looking back, Fairy Tales Between Timber Frames and Rocks describes this part of the trip surprisingly well.

I also wanted to approach this journey differently. This time, it would not be the sights that determined my route, but the stopovers themselves. Whatever I happened to discover along the way would reveal itself naturally. Rather than following a fixed itinerary, I allowed the journey to unfold on its own. One stopover led to the next. Apple Maps replaced the traditional motorhome navigation system, and every now and then a brown tourist sign by the roadside was all it took to send me in a completely new direction.

Medebach

Originally, I had chosen Paderborn as my general destination. However, I wanted to avoid larger towns and cities whenever possible. My motorhome stopover guide suggested Medebach as the next stop along my route. Free of charge and offering basic facilities, it sounded quite promising.

When I arrived, there was only one other motorhome on the site, and the surrounding area was a construction zone. Not exactly inviting, but after almost seven hours of leisurely driving along Germany's back roads, I simply didn't feel like continuing. So, I stayed.

Also blieb ich.

Sometimes, a motorhome stopover is simply a place to arrive.

The following morning, I picked up some fresh bread rolls and enjoyed breakfast at a small forest parking area just outside Medebach. With a beautiful view across the landscape and no schedule to keep, it felt as though the journey had only truly begun.

Nieheim

After a peaceful night and an unhurried breakfast, I continued my journey to Nieheim. The town was not entirely unfamiliar to me, as an acquaintance of mine had moved here several years ago. We spontaneously arranged to meet for dinner that evening, which left me with plenty of time to explore the town and admire its beautiful timber-framed architecture.

image.png

When I returned to the stopover at around 11 p.m., I found myself completely alone. The site is quietly situated on the edge of town, right beside a small park and a pond. There are no facilities to speak of, but if you're looking for peace and quiet, you'll find it in abundance.

I wasn't tired yet, so I took some time to reflect on the day. Somehow, after just two days, the journey seemed to have settled into a rhythm all of its own.

Horn-Bad Meinberg

As the Externsteine emerged between the trees for the very first time, I couldn't help but think of fairy tales and ancient legends.

There is something almost surreal about the Externsteine. Towering sandstone formations rise straight out of the forest, connected by stairways and pathways that invite visitors to explore them. It comes as no surprise that countless legends have surrounded this remarkable place for centuries.

One of the best-known legends tells of the Devil, who is said to have hurled these massive rocks at a nearby monastery. He missed his target rather spectacularly, leaving behind one of Germany's most fascinating natural and cultural landmarks. Other stories speak of a White Lady, said to appear among the rocks as the guardian of a hidden secret.

image.png

Whether it is tales of the Devil, hidden treasures, or ancient Germanic places of worship, the Externsteine offer plenty of food for the imagination. As I wandered among the towering sandstone formations, I could easily understand why this place has captivated people for centuries. Some places do not tell their stories through historical facts and dates alone. They live through the stories that people have passed down and continue to tell about them.

image.png

Honestly, if the Brothers Grimm had travelled Germany in a motorhome collecting their fairy tales, the Externsteine would probably have been one of their very first stops.

After a short hike, hunger eventually made itself known. Much to my regret, I passed by the beer garden and opted for the provisions I had brought along instead. After all, they wouldn't eat themselves and needed to be used up sooner or later.

While having lunch, I was already looking for my next stopover. The general direction was set: a little farther east before gradually turning south. The only real requirement was that it had to be somewhere I had never visited with my motorhome before.

Several stopovers lay along my planned route. I simply passed the first two without stopping. Not because they were overcrowded, but because of something far more important these days: mobile internet coverage. While driving, my iPhone is connected to the navigation system and conveniently shows the current signal strength. In my personal experience, a large "E" with full signal bars usually means only one thing: today, the internet has decided to take the day off.

By now, it was already getting late, so I decided that the next stopover would be the one for the night, no matter what it looked like.

That is how I eventually ended up in Witzenhausen. There was no town in sight, only a few scattered farmhouses and a children's adventure park. The motorhome stopover is located directly on the park's grounds.

When I arrived, my motorhome was the only one there. The size of the parking area suggested that it could accommodate many more guests on busier days. Since the stopover charges a small fee, I went looking for the owner.

I eventually found an elderly gentleman who was carefully removing thistles from the lawn. When I jokingly apologized for interrupting his work, he looked up with a smile and simply replied, "You're allowed to."

What started as a simple question about paying for the stopover soon turned into a long and thoroughly enjoyable conversation. I learned that he had built the children's adventure park himself many years ago and that his children are now running it. Before long, we found ourselves talking about the good old days, about how so many things have become automated, and perhaps about what has been lost along the way.

One particular sentence has stayed with me ever since:
"Who still removes thistles from a lawn by hand these days?"

He told me that many more motorhomes used to stop here when the pitches were still free of charge. A small fee was only introduced after the installation of the chemical waste disposal facilities to help cover the associated costs and maintenance. These days, there might occasionally be five motorhomes staying overnight, but more often than not, only one or two campers find their way here.

Before we said goodbye, he showed me what he considered to be the best spot on the site: perfectly level, no levelling wedges required, and with an unobstructed view of the sky for satellite reception.

image.png

I thanked him for the pleasant conversation and prepared a true camper's dinner: pasta with egg, ham, and cheese. Not particularly photogenic, but quick to make and surprisingly delicious. I spent the rest of the evening watching the sun slowly set before the first raindrops began to fall on the roof of my motorhome.

A First Interim Conclusion | Ein erstes Zwischenfazit

After the first three days on the road, my answer is quite clear: no. At least not in the places I chose to visit.

The stopovers were certainly used, but they were a far cry from the image of permanently overcrowded sites. What was often missing, however, was infrastructure. If you're travelling self-sufficiently, that gives you a great deal of freedom. If you rely on fresh water and waste disposal facilities, a little more planning is required.

Then again, perhaps it also has something to do with the way I travel. I deliberately avoided the major tourist hotspots. The stopovers determined my route, not the sights themselves. As a result, I found myself taking small detours, making spontaneous discoveries, and enjoying encounters that I could never have planned.

The real surprise, however, was something entirely different. The more I followed brown tourist signs and small country roads, the more often I found myself in places and meeting people I would probably never have discovered otherwise.

Perhaps it isn't the great landmarks that make a journey truly memorable, but the small stories waiting to be found somewhere between timber frames and rocks.
