This weekend we made the final trip of our 2025 geological expedition. This time, we visited another natural wonder in the province of Matanzas, called Saturn Cave.


In the previous post, we talked about our trip to the Yumurí Valley, one of the most important natural areas in this province; today we'll discuss our stay in one of the most outstanding karst formations in Matanzas, a province located in western Cuba.

A province with many caves

For those of us who live in Cuba, especially in the western part of the country, or who have visited this province, it's well known that it's home to some of Cuba's most famous caves: the Bellamar Caves.

However, very few people know about the many other caves in the area, among which the Saturn Caves stand out.

Work Objectives

Our objective was to assess the importance of these caves for the region's tourism development, evaluate the conservation status of the site and the different species that inhabit it. We also needed to check the water quality and its potential uses for human enjoyment.

The Adventure

Unlike our previous trip, this time we had experience with the route, as we had to take part of the path used to reach the Yumurí Valley.

We crossed the Bacunayagua bridge again, which, as I mentioned in As mentioned in a previous post, this is the highest bridge in Cuba. Crossing this feat of Cuban civil engineering allows you to admire the region's great natural beauty, the vastness of the vegetation, and the wide variety of animal species that abound there.

Even though we've been to this place before, we're always moved by its natural beauty.

The Arrival

After a little over three hours, we arrived at our destination. I truly can't express all the emotion I felt at such beauty, but I also saw how mismanagement and improper use of the facilities have caused the place to lose its former splendor and fall into disrepair.

Saturn Cave is located very close to Varadero. This natural treasure is a karst cavity that houses a crystal-clear lake approximately 20 meters wide, 80 meters long, and 18 meters deep. Its turquoise waters, with their slightly cool temperature, are what make it stand out. According to local experts, its waters are home to blind fish, shrimp, and other unique species.

Upon arriving at the cave, we found ourselves in a karst paradise with diverse formations created by the action of wind, water, and weather, which look like they were painted by artists.

One of the distinguishing features of Saturn Cave is the great variety of stalactites and stalagmites. For those unfamiliar with the subject: stalactites and stalagmites are natural formations that form in caves as a result of the continuous deposition of minerals by seeping water.


Stalactites are the formations that hang from the ceiling of a cave, while stalagmites rise from the floor to the ceiling. When these two types of rock join, they form beautiful columns of karst rock.

To assess the water quality, some members of our team decided to bathe in it and confirmed that it is suitable for swimming, as well as being a refreshing way to cool off from the high temperatures.

Despite the above, we observed that the cave is not as well-maintained as it should be. Irresponsible actions by some people have damaged formations that took thousands of years to create, or have dumped waste into the waters of the natural lake, polluting this natural beauty.

No However, the Saturn Caves are an important area for developing nature tourism and could become a viable option for domestic and international tourists visiting Matanzas, as evidenced by the facilities built there for that purpose.

Una introducción necesaria

Este fin de semana realizamos el último viaje de nuestra expedición geológica de 2025. En esta ocasión, visitamos otra belleza natural de la provincia de Matanzas, llamada Cueva de Saturno.

En la entrega anterior hablamos de nuestro viaje al Valle de Yumurí, una de las zonas naturales más importantes de esta provincia; hoy comentaremos nuestra estancia en una de las formaciones cársicas más destacadas de Matanzas, provincia ubicada en el occidente de Cuba.

Una provincia con muchas cuevas

Para quienes vivimos en Cuba, especialmente en la zona occidental del país, o han visitado esta provincia, es conocido que aquí se encuentran las cuevas más famosas de Cuba: las Cuevas de Bellamar.

Sin embargo, muy pocos conocen la existencia de muchas otras cuevas en el territorio, entre las que destacan las Cuevas de Saturno.

Objetivos de trabajo

Nuestro objetivo fue valorar la importancia de estas cuevas para el desarrollo turístico de la región, evaluar el estado de conservación del lugar y de las diferentes especies que allí habitan. Además, debíamos comprobar la calidad del agua y sus posibles usos para el disfrute humano.

La aventura

A diferencia de nuestro viaje anterior, esta vez contábamos con experiencia sobre el recorrido, ya que debíamos tomar parte del camino utilizado para llegar al Valle de Yumurí.

Nuevamente cruzamos el puente de Bacunayagua, que, como mencioné en una publicación anterior, es el puente más elevado de Cuba. Cruzar por esta obra de la ingeniería civil cubana permite admirar las grandes bellezas naturales de la región, la inmensidad de la vegetación y la gran variedad de especies animales que abundan en el lugar.

A pesar de conocer este lugar, siempre nos emociona la belleza natural que encierra.

La llegada

Después de algo más de tres horas, llegamos a nuestro destino. La verdad es que no puedo expresar toda la emoción que sentí ante tanta belleza, pero también pude ver cómo la mala gestión y el uso inadecuado de las instalaciones han provocado que el lugar no conserve toda su belleza ni esté en el estado que debería.

La Cueva de Saturno se encuentra muy cerca de Varadero. Este tesoro natural es una cavidad cársica que alberga un lago cristalino de unos 20 metros de ancho, 80 metros de largo y 18 metros de profundidad. Sus aguas cristalinas de color turquesa y temperatura algo fría la distinguen. Según nos contaron especialistas del lugar, en sus aguas viven peces ciegos, camarones y otras especies características.

Al llegar a la cueva, nos encontramos con un paraíso cársico y diversas formaciones creadas por la acción del viento, el agua y el clima, que parecen pintadas por artistas plásticos.

Una de las características que distinguen a la Cueva de Saturno es la gran variedad de estalactitas y estalagmitas presentes. Para quienes no son especialistas en el tema: las estalactitas y estalagmitas son accidentes naturales que se forman en las cuevas como resultado de la deposición continua de minerales por el agua que se filtra.

Las estalactitas son las formaciones que cuelgan del techo de la caverna, mientras que las estalagmitas se elevan desde el suelo hacia el techo. Cuando ambas se unen, forman columnas muy bellas de roca cársica.

Para evaluar la calidad del agua, algunos miembros de nuestro equipo decidieron bañarse y constataron que es apta para el baño, además de ser una forma refrescante de aliviar las altas temperaturas.

A pesar de lo anterior, pudimos observar que la cueva no está todo lo cuidada que debiera. Hay acciones irresponsables de personas que han dañado algunas formaciones que tardaron miles de años en crearse, o han arrojado desechos a las aguas del lago natural, contaminando esta belleza de la naturaleza.

No obstante, las Cuevas de Saturno constituyen una zona importante para desarrollar el turismo de naturaleza y pueden convertirse en una opción real para turistas nacionales y extranjeros que visiten Matanzas, como lo demuestran las instalaciones construidas en el lugar con ese propósito.
