Once again, we left the institute for fieldwork to investigate one of the most beautiful ecosystems in western Cuba, located in Mayabeque, the country's youngest province.

Welcome to Santa Cruz del Norte

Santa Cruz del Norte, on the northern coast of Mayabeque, is a place that reveals itself as a bridge between geography and memory. My personal research journey to this municipality began with the certainty that every corner holds a story, and that its geographical features are more than just shapes: they are symbols of identity.

Located about 45 kilometers east of Havana, Santa Cruz del Norte opens onto the sea with beaches that, although less well-known than those of Varadero, possess a serene and authentic quality. Its light-colored sands and constant waves invite contemplation rather than the tourist bustle.

The typically tropical climate offers warm temperatures year-round, with sea breezes that temper the humidity and make the place ideal for relaxation and field research. The hydrography is defined by the mouth of the Santa Cruz River, which brings freshness and life to the area, and by the proximity of coastal formations that reveal the interaction between sea and land.

Among the most prominent geographical features is Peñón del Fraile, a rock formation that rises like a guardian along the coast. Its importance is not only scenic: it is a cultural and natural symbol. For us, their visit represented an encounter with the history and spirituality of the country. Santa Cruz del Norte, en la costa norte de Mayabeque, es un lugar que se descubre como un puente entre la geografía y la memoria.
