Heading to the Macambo-Cayo Güín Complex

The sun hadn't yet risen when we set sail from Nipe Bay, bound for one of the best-kept secrets of the Holguín coast: the Macambo-Cayo Güín complex. The trip combined geological exploration, an inventory of water resources, and the simple pleasure of getting lost among mangroves and keys.

Geography of the Area

The geography makes its presence known from afar. Macambo, a low, wooded peninsula, acts as a prelude to the key. The terrain is varied, with some elevations, dominated by calcareous deposits and skeletal soils, typical of a shelf archipelago. Here, the geology speaks of ancient, elevated reefs: Quaternary reef limestones, encrusted with fossil mollusks that crunch underfoot. In some natural cuts, we find consolidated paleodune layers, evidence of higher sea levels.


Natural resources are a silent symphony. The red mangrove weaves a labyrinth where aerial roots serve as nurseries for fish and other animals. Herons, pelicans, and the elusive ghost crab, an indicator of healthy beaches, flew overhead. The vegetation on the mainland includes the mastic tree and the sea grape, adapted to the salinity and trade winds.


Water is the lifeblood of the trip. Although there are no permanent rivers, we discovered small brackish springs on the peninsula—outcrops of the thin water table—and temporary pools in karst depressions. On Cayo Güín, a shallow pool of slightly saline water serves as a watering hole for migratory birds. The quality of the seawater, crystal clear at the tips of the cay, contrasts sharply with the mangrove areas where organic matter tints the water amber.

The work was intense: taking sediment samples, photographing geological strata, recording birds, and measuring salinity. But leisure time found its way into every break. We swam in a natural pool flanked by eroded rocks, an ancient tidal channel, and shared a delicious meal under a beach almond tree. At sunset, Cayo Güín was tinged with pink and orange: the setting sun, reflected in the calm waters, blurred the boundary between sky and sea. We returned with notebooks full of data, our skin tanned by the salt air, and the certainty that science and wonder can sail in the same boat.

El sol aún no asomaba cuando zarpamos desde la bahía de Nipe, rumbo a uno de los secretos mejor guardados de la costa holguinera: el complejo Macambo-Cayo Güín. El viaje combinaba exploración geológica, inventario de recursos hídricos y el simple placer de perderse entre manglares y cayos.

Geografía del lugar

La geografía impone su firma desde lejos. Macambo, una península baja y boscosa, actúa como antesala del cayo. El relieve es variado, con algunas elevaciones, dominado por acumulaciones calcáreas y suelos esqueléticos, propios de un archipiélago de plataforma.
