Greetings fellow travelers, I would like to tell you about a very special corner of Margarita Island: the mouth of La Playa lagoon, located very close to the charming Zaragoza beach, in the municipality of Pedro González, Nueva Esparta state. For me, this place is a beautiful natural treasure that deserves to be known, valued, and above all, preserved.
The beaches in this area tend to be quite cold, as they are bathed by ocean waters, which gives them a unique character. They are ideal for those who enjoy fishing, whether as a recreational activity or as a means of livelihood, as is the case for many locals.
Several local fishermen take advantage of these waters rich in marine life to carry out their daily tasks, and it is precisely in this context that the lagoon and its outlet channel take on importance.
Saludos amigos viajeros, quiero hablarles en esta ocasión de un rincón muy especial de la Isla de Margarita: la desembocadura de la laguna La Playa, ubicada muy cerca de la encantadora playa Zaragoza, en el municipio Pedro González, estado Nueva Esparta. Este lugar es para mí un hermoso tesoro natural que merece ser conocido, valorado y, sobre todo, preservado.
Las playas de esta zona suelen ser bastante frías, ya que están bañadas por aguas oceánicas, lo que les da un carácter particular. Son ideales para quienes disfrutan de la pesca, ya sea como actividad recreativa o como medio de sustento, como es el caso de muchos lugareños.
Varios de los pescadores locales aprovechan estas aguas ricas en vida marina para realizar sus faenas diarias, y es precisamente en este contexto que cobra importancia la laguna y su canal de desembocadura.
This beautiful canal is a natural gem that the locals care for with great care and zeal. It is not just a waterway, but a vital route for the fishing community. Fishermen use it to bring their boats in at the end of the day, taking them to the lagoon where they are kept safe. This lagoon not only offers a safe haven for their boats, but also protects them from bad weather, functioning as a natural harbor.
Este hermoso canal es una joyita natural que los lugareños cuidan con esmero y mucho celo. No es solo un paso de agua, sino una vía vital para la comunidad pesquera. A través de él, los pescadores introducen sus embarcaciones al finalizar su jornada de trabajo, llevándolas hasta la laguna donde quedan resguardadas. Esta laguna no solo les ofrece un refugio seguro para sus botes, sino que también los protege de los embates del mal tiempo, funcionando como un puerto natural.
I was completely fascinated as I watched the boats gently swaying on the turquoise waters of the canal. It was as if they were dancing to the rhythm of the wind, creating a spectacle that conveyed peace and harmony. The entire canal is carefully protected by large stones that form a breakwater along its edges, which not only serves a practical purpose but also gives it a charming air.
Quedé completamente fascinada al observar cómo las embarcaciones se contoneaban suavemente sobre las aguas azul turquesa del canal. Era como si danzaran al ritmo del viento, creando un espectáculo que transmite paz y armonía. Todo el canal está cuidadosamente protegido por grandes piedras que forman un espigón a lo largo de sus bordes, lo cual no solo cumple una función práctica, sino que también le da un aire encantador.
One of the things that caught my attention the most was the presence of numerous seabirds that have found an ideal refuge in this place. From seagulls to gannets and pelicans, the canal has become a meeting point for these species. A friendly local told me that there are many more birds that frequent the area, although he couldn't remember all their names. It's beautiful to see them perching on the rocks or diving into the water in search of food.
Una de las cosas que más me llamó la atención fue la presencia de numerosas aves marinas que han encontrado en este lugar un refugio ideal. Desde gaviotas hasta alcatraces y pelícanos, el canal se convierte en un punto de encuentro para estas especies. Un amable lugareño me comentó que hay muchas más aves que frecuentan la zona, aunque no recordaba todos sus nombres. Es muy hermoso verlas posarse sobre las rocas o lanzarse al agua en busca de alimento.
Along the edge of the estuary, you can see a few houses that, far from detracting from the aesthetics of the place, add a picturesque and welcoming touch. Imagining living there, waking up every morning to the view of the canal, the mountains in the background, and the sound of the sea, is simply a dream. The tranquility that permeates the atmosphere is difficult to describe in words, but it can be felt in every corner.
A lo largo del borde de la desembocadura se pueden ver algunas viviendas que, lejos de romper con la estética del lugar, le aportan un toque pintoresco y acogedor. Imaginar vivir allí, despertando cada mañana con la vista del canal, las montañas al fondo y el sonido del mar, es simplemente un sueño. La tranquilidad que se respira en el ambiente es difícil de describir con palabras, pero se siente en cada rincón.
During the holiday season, this channel also becomes a place of fun for local children and young people. They jump into the water, swim, play, and enjoy this natural environment that looks like something out of a postcard. It is a place that not only serves fishermen but also strengthens community ties.
From the mouth of the channel, you can enjoy spectacular views of the hills surrounding the area, as well as Zaragoza Beach, which stretches out to one side, displaying all its beauty with its white sand and sparkling sea. It is a landscape that invites contemplation, photography, and, of course, relaxation.
Durante la temporada de vacaciones, este canal se transforma también en un espacio de diversión para los niños y jóvenes de la localidad. Se lanzan al agua, nadan, juegan y disfrutan de este entorno natural que parece sacado de una postal. Es un lugar que no solo sirve a los pescadores, sino que también fortalece los lazos comunitarios.
Desde la desembocadura se puede apreciar una vista espectacular de los cerros que rodean la zona, así como de la playa Zaragoza, que se extiende a un costado, mostrando toda su belleza con su arena clara y su mar radiante. Es un paisaje que invita a la contemplación, a la fotografía y, por supuesto, al descanso.

Sí, querida @mergusa88, sin duda alguna, una de las mayores bendiciones que tienen los margariteños es poder disfrutar cada día de la cercanía del mar y de los paisajes tan hermosos que nos regala la isla. Vivir rodeados de tanta belleza natural es un privilegio que a veces damos por sentado, pero que siempre debemos agradecer.
