Continuing along the E10 through Austria - Day 2 : The southernmost point of the Czech Republic - Große Mühl (AUT)

Welcome to the second part of my journey along the European route E10 through Austria. In the first part, I reached the southernmost point of the Czech Republic. Today, we will continue from this point, first south and then west along the Czech border, but on the Austrian side.

Vítejte u druhého pokračování z mojí cesty po Evropské trase E10 skrz Rakousko. V první části jsem se dostal na nejjižnější bod České republiky. A dnes budeme pokračovat z tohoto místa nejprve na jih a poté na západ podél České hranice, ale na Rakouské straně.

After crossing the border, which took me about two minutes from where I slept, I found myself in our southern neighbor's country. It didn't take long before I came across the first interesting sight. A fortified rampart from a time when Europe was in the midst of many military conflicts. This one, for example, served as an advanced garrison against Swedish troops. That is why it is called Schwedenschanze.

Po překonání hraniční čáry. Což mi trvalo asi 2 minuty od místa kde jsem spal. Jsem se ocitl u našich jižních sousedů. Netrvalo dlouho a čekala na mě první zajímavost. Opevněný val z doby kdy Evropa byla uprostřed mnoha válečných konfliktů. Třeba tento sloužil jako předsunutá posádka proti Švédským vojskům. Proto se ji říká Schwedenschanze.

Not far away was another reminder of a time not so long ago. Because in the second half of the 20th century, this was one of the most heavily guarded borders in the world. Between East and West. The so-called Iron Curtain.

Nedaleko byla další památka na době né tak vzdálenou. Protože zde byla v druhé polovině 20. století jedna z nejstřeženějších hranic na světě. Mezi východem a západem. Takzvaná Železná opona.

And if that weren't enough, on a short stretch of road. There is also the watershed between the North Sea and the Black Sea.

A aby toho nebylo málo, na krátkém úseku cesty. Tak je zde ještě rozvodí Severního a Černého moře.

From the statue of the watershed, I began to descend towards the town of Bad Leonfelden. Here I bought food for several days of travel. I expected to spend the next few days in the countryside or small villages where there was nothing to buy except farm shops.

Od sochy rozvodí jsem začal klesat k městu Bad Leonfelden. Zde jsem nakoupil potraviny na několik dní cesty. Protože jsem očekával, několik příštích dní pobyt v přírodě a nebo malých vesnicích, kde nelze nic pořídit, kromě farmářských prodejen.

Here, I also joined the ridge trail, which I followed for the next few days. But first, I had to climb the first hill over 1,000 meters on my journey. More precisely, 1,125 meters. The hill is called Sternstein. There is a stone lookout tower with a cash box where you can pay 2 euros and look out over the surrounding area. I skipped this viewpoint because I had a long journey over the hills ahead of me and didn't want to waste my energy unnecessarily.

Zde jsem se také připojil na hřebenovou trasu, kterou jsem sledoval několik následujících dní. Ale nejprve jsem musel vystoupat na první kopec přes 1000 metrů na mojí cestě. Přesněji 1125 metrů. A kopec se jmenuje Sternstein. Je zde kamenná rozhledna s kasičkou kde můžete zaplatit 2 Eura a podívat se do širokého okolí. Já jsem tuto vyhlídku vynechal, protože mě čekala dlouhá cesta přes kopce a nechtěl jsem zbytečně plýtvat síly.

I had a clear plan for this trip. I wouldn't climb any hills that were too far from my planned route. Hirschstein (1026 m) was exactly that. I just had to walk through a wind farm.

Pro tuto cestu jsem si dal jasný plán. Že nebudu chodit na kopce, které jsou příliš vzdálené od plánované trasy. Přesně takový byl Hirschstein (1026m). Akorát jsem musel projít skrze větrnou farmu.

The summit itself was a rock formation under which a stone table with benches was hidden. Unfortunately, the view from the summit was not particularly impressive, as trees blocked the view.

Samotný vrchol, byla skalka pod kterou byl schovaný kamenný stůl s lavičkami. Bohužel výhled z vrcholu nebyl nijak krásný, protože vrchol převyšovaly stromy.

I continued towards the Guglwald pedestrian border crossing, where I visited the Iron Curtain Memorial. A 50-meter-long section of the fence that divided the Eastern and Western blocs has been preserved there.

Pokračoval jsem směrem pěší hraniční přechod Guglwald. Kde jsem navštívil památník Železné opony. Kde bylo zachováno 50 metrů dlouhé oplocení, které rozdělovalo východní a západní blok.

From Guglwald, I continued 12 kilometers through forests, meadows, and views of the Šumava landscape, which is more civilized than on the Czech side. Because for 40 years, there was only the army on our side.

Z Guglwaldu jsem pokračoval 12 kilometrů skrze lesy louky a výhledy do Šumavské krajiny, který je více civilizovaná, než na České straně. Protože u nás byl 40 let jen armáda.

The last town I passed through that day was Haslach an der Mühl. It was pretty dead there on Saturday afternoon, so I quickly walked through the town. The only thing that caught my eye was a strange entrance to one of the houses.

Poslední městečkem, kterým jsem ten den prošel byl Haslach an der Mühl. Kde bylo během sobotního odpoledne dosti mrtvo. A tak jsem v rychlosti město prošel. Zaujal mě pouze jeden zvláštní vchod do jednoho z domů.

I chose the area around the chapel and the banks of the Große Mühl river as my place to spend the night. But I still had to walk 5.5 kilometers to get there. I made it just before sunset. So, a quick meal. Wash my feet in the river and off to my sleeping bag.

Jako místo na přenocování jsem vybral okolí kaple a břehu říčky Große Mühl. Ale to jsem musel ujít ještě 5.5 kilometru. Což se mi povedlo tesně před západem slunce. Takže rychlé jídlo. Umýt nohy v řece a hurá do spacáku.

The second stage was finally a proper one in terms of distance and elevation gain. It also showed me what to expect over the next few days. But more about that another time. Bye for now.

Druhá etapa byla konečně pořádná co se vzdálenosti a převýšení týče. Navíc mi ukázala, co mě následujících několik dní bude čekat. Ale o tom zase někdy příště. Ahoj.
