Visiting the Fausto Llerena Land Tortoise Breeding Center, Galapagos Islands - The Ecuador diary / Visitando el Centro de Crianza de Tortugas Terrestres Fausto Llerena, Islas Galápagos - El diario de Ecuador

When you travel to this fantastic archipelago and the main reason you went there was to see its stars, the wildlife, it's never enough. So once again in this diary, I bring you a little more of that.

Cuando viajas a este fantástico archipiélago y el motivo principal por el que fuiste allí fue para ver a sus protagonistas, la fauna, nunca es suficiente. Así que una vez más en este diario, les traigo un poco más de eso.

After an intense tour in which I visited some places in the upper part of Santa Cruz Island, such as the collapse craters, the lava tunnels and El Chato Reserve, when I returned to Puerto Ayora it was still early: 3:30 in the afternoon. So I checked my travel guide to see what was nearby and found this Galapagos Islands giant tortoise breeding center.

Después de un intenso tour en el que recorrí algunos lugares de la parte alta de la isla Santa Cruz, como los cráteres de colapso, los túneles de lava y la Reserva El Chato, cuando regresé a Puerto Ayora aún era temprano: 3:30 de la tarde. Entonces consulté mi guía de viaje para ver qué tenía cerca y encontré este centro de cría de tortugas gigantes de las Islas Galápagos.

Located on Charles Darwin Avenue in Puerto Ayora, quite close to the hotel where I was staying, the Fausto Llerena Land Tortoise Breeding Center is a place where you can see the different species of Galapagos tortoises that exist on the islands from when they are hatchlings until they reach about 3 years of age, at which point they are released into their natural habitat.

Ubicado en la Avenida Charles Darwin de Puerto Ayora, bastante cerca del hotel donde me estaba hospedando, el Centro de Crianza de Tortugas Terrestres Fausto Llerena es un lugar en que puedes ver las diferentes especies de tortugas Galápagos que existen en las islas desde que son crías hasta que alcanzan unos 3 años, edad en la que son liberadas en su hábitat natural.

As you walk around the site, there are several enclosures that house the different stages of life: hatchlings, juveniles, and adult turtles. It's incredible that these little creatures grow to be so enormous!

En el recorrido por el lugar hay varios corrales que albergan las diferentes fases de vida: las crías, los juveniles y las tortugas adultas. ¡Resulta increíble que estas pequeñas criaturas lleguen a ser tan enormes!

This breeding program is vital to prevent the different species of giant tortoises from becoming extinct and to enable them to be reintroduced to their islands of origin.

Este programa de cría es vital para que las diferentes especies de tortugas gigantes no desaparezcan y puedan ser reintroducidas en sus islas de origen.

Another interesting thing here is learning about the story of Lonesome George, the last individual of the Chelonoidis abingdonii species. He was found on Pinta Island and moved to this place in 1972, where he lived until his death on June 24, 2012. They estimate that he was over 100 years old. Incidentally, its caretaker for three decades was Fausto Llerena, after whom this center is named. Despite their efforts, they were unable to get it to reproduce.

Otra cosa interesante aquí es conocer la historia del Solitario George, el último individuo de la especie Chelonoidis abingdonii. Fue encontrado en la isla Pinta y trasladado a este lugar en 1972, donde vivió hasta su muerte, el 24 de junio del 2012. Estiman que tenía más de 100 años. Por cierto, su cuidador durante tres décadas fue Fausto Llerena, en honor al cual se bautizó este centro. A pesar de los esfuerzos que hicieron, no pudieron lograr que se reprodujera.

When I visited this place, Lonesome George's body had been sent to New York to be taxidermied or embalmed for public display, so I was unable to see it. Some time later, I learned that in 2017 it had returned and been placed in a special room: Symbol of Hope. This tortoise became an emblem of the fight against extinction.

Cuando visité este lugar, el cuerpo del Solitario George había sido enviado a Nueva York para ser taxidermizado o embalsamado para su exposición al público, por lo que no pude verlo. Tiempo después me enteré que en 2017 regresó y fue instalado en una sala especial: Símbolo de Esperanza. Esta tortuga se convirtió en un emblema de la lucha contra la extinción.

We often read online or watch documentaries and television reports about species conservation, but it is when we visit the places where these programs are implemented that we can truly appreciate the enormous struggle involved. It is certainly satisfying to see how the Galapagos Islands are deeply committed to preserving their biodiversity.

Muchas veces leemos en Internet o vemos documentales y reportajes en televisión sobre la conservación de especies, pero es cuando visitamos los lugares donde se llevan a cabo estos programas cuando realmente podemos apreciar el enorme esfuerzo que supone. Sin duda, es muy satisfactorio ver cómo las Islas Galápagos están profundamente comprometidas con la preservación de su biodiversidad.
