Before traveling to Ecuador, I had read about these iconic hats, better known as Panama hats, but which are actually made in this country: toquilla straw hats. Of course, I wanted to see them and, if possible, buy one.
Antes de viajar a Ecuador, había leído sobre estos emblemáticos sombreros, mejor conocidos como Panamá, pero que en realidad son fabricados en este país: los sombreros de paja toquilla. Por supuesto quería verlos, y si era posible, comprar uno.
They are abundant in the city of Cuenca, I saw them in many shop windows during my stay there, and I also visited a museum where they teach you about their history. At the Toquilla Straw Hat Museum, you can see the manufacturing process in the workshop, and of course, you can take home whichever ones you like. They have a wide variety for sale.

The place is small but very entertaining. You can easily spend an hour there, as I did, looking at the large number of hats on display and listening to the artisans explain how they are made.

I was told that toquilla straw hats, also known as Panama hats or Montecristi hats (Montecristi being the main producing city in Ecuador), are made from the endemic Carludovica palmata plant, which grows in the coastal region and the Amazon. Their history dates back to the country's indigenous peoples, who wove different items from this material.

And why are they better known as Panama hats? Well, it turns out that in the 19th century, they were exported to America and Europe via Panama, where they were also sold, so people started calling them that, creating a misunderstanding about their true origin. And this name became established in the early 20th century with the construction of the Panama Canal, because the workers wore these hats, and they became even more popular.

When I asked the artisans at the workshop what made them different, they explained that apart from the natural fiber they are made from, which undergoes a long process before it can be woven, it is the technique. Making them takes quite a bit of work, the tighter the weave, the longer they take to finish and the more expensive the piece is.
