The first glances of Barcelona / Las primeras miradas a Barcelona

I had been wanting to visit this city for a long time, and when I was finally able to travel there a few years ago, my modest compact camera had a lot of work to do immortalizing everything that caught my eye. Today, I’d like to share some photos from my first walk through Barcelona, these are the first glimpses or impressions I took away from this huge, diverse, and bustling Spanish city.

Tenía mucho tiempo deseando conocer esta ciudad, y cuando finalmente pude viajar hasta allá, hace unos años, mi modesta cámara compacta tuvo mucho trabajo inmortalizando todo lo que me llamaba la atención. Les comparto, en esta ocasión, imágenes del primer paseo que hice en Barcelona, son las primeras miradas o impresiones que me llevé de esta enorme, diversa y agitada urbe española.

These photos were taken at the port. I arrived in Barcelona early in the morning, and the friend who put me up during the week I spent there met me at the subway station. After dropping off my luggage at her place, resting a bit, and chatting, I wanted to go for a walk. She couldn’t join me at that moment, but she recommended some places I could visit while she was busy, and I decided to go to the waterfront first.

El escenario de estas tomas es el puerto. Llegué a Barcelona temprano en la mañana, y la amiga que me dio alojamiento durante la semana que pasé allí, me buscó en la estación del metro. Después de dejar mi equipaje en su casa, descansar un poco y conversar, quise salir a pasear. Ella no podía acompañarme en ese momento, pero me recomendó algunos lugares que podía visitar mientras se desocupaba, y elegí ir primero al área costera.

It was summer, and the light in the Mediterranean during those months is special. I think it’s very hard for your photos to turn out badly. The first thing I noticed was the multicultural atmosphere in this city, there were so many people in the area, from all over.

Era verano, y la luz que tiene el mediterráneo en esos meses es especial. Creo que es muy difícil que las fotos te queden mal. Lo primero que noté es el aire multicultural que se vive en esta ciudad, había muchísima gente en la zona, de todas partes.

The second thing that caught my attention was the architecture, the blend of the old and the new in the different areas of the port and beyond. And, of course, the sea, which always adds to a city’s charm.

Lo segundo que me llamó la atención es la arquitectura, lo antiguo y lo moderno mezclándose en las diferentes zonas del puerto y más allá. Y por supuesto el mar, que siempre le agrega atractivo a una ciudad.

There were also the sounds, the street was vibrant with several street musicians enlivening the walk.

Estaban también los sonidos, la calle estaba vibrante con varios músicos callejeros amenizando el paseo.

I walked around the port area from midday until sunset. The break I took at Barceloneta beach was to watch the sunset.

Caminé por la zona del puerto desde el mediodía hasta que el sol cayó. La pausa que hice en la playa de la Barceloneta fue para ver el atardecer.

I must say that these first glimpses of Barcelona exceeded my expectations of the city, and the port area seemed to me an ideal place to feel its pulse.

Debo decir que estas primeras miradas a Barcelona superaron las expectativas que tenía de la ciudad, y la zona del puerto me pareció un lugar ideal para sentir su pulso.

Night fell and I was still out on the street, the hours flew by. My friend texted me to find out where I was so we could meet up. She thought I was lost 😂.

Llegó la noche y yo aún estaba en la calle, se me pasaron las horas rápido. Mi amiga me mandó un mensaje para saber por dónde andaba y encontrarnos. Pensó que me había perdido 😂.

Before leaving the port, I came across a mirrored glass panel somewhere, and it occurred to me to take a self-portrait as a memento of my first stroll through this cosmopolitan city.

Antes de irme del puerto, me topé con un vidrio-espejo por ahí, y se me ocurrió hacerme un autorretrato como recuerdo de mi primer paseo por esta cosmopolita ciudad.
