In the six days I had been exploring the Galapagos Islands, I had seen many incredible and unique things, but apparently that is the norm there. So when I decided to visit Los Gemelos (The Twins), I was sure I would be in for another surprise.

En los seis días que llevaba explorando las Islas Galápagos, había visto muchas cosas increíbles y únicas, pero al parecer eso es lo normal allí. Así que cuando decidí visitar Los Gemelos, estaba segura de que me esperaba otra sorpresa.

I read a short review of the place in my travel guide and was drawn to it, so I asked how to get there and was told that there were taxis that made the trip and also included a couple of other places. Los Gemelos are two craters located 18 km from Puerto Ayora (where I was staying), in the upper part of Santa Cruz Island.

Leí una breve reseña del lugar en mi guía de viaje y me atrajo, así que pregunté cómo llegar allí y me dijeron que había taxis que hacían el paseo y que además incluían un par de lugares más. Los Gemelos son dos cráteres que se encuentran a 18 Km de Puerto Ayora (donde estaba alojada), en la parte alta de la isla Santa Cruz.

These collapse craters are located at an altitude of approximately 600 m, and the road that passes through them divides them. The larger crater is on the west side and the smaller crater is on the east side.

Estos cráteres de colapso se encuentran a una altitud aproximada de 600 m, y la carretera que pasa por allí los divide. El cráter más grande se encuentra en el lado oeste y el más pequeño, en el lado este.

They are called this because they were formed when, after a volcanic eruption, the underground chambers were left empty and the surface materials collapsed.

Se llaman así porque se formaron cuando, tras una erupción volcánica, las cámaras subterráneas quedaron vacías y los materiales de la superficie se derrumbaron.

I had never seen a landscape like this before, and as there was fog in the abyss and a light drizzle was falling, everything looked even more intriguing.

Nunca había visto un paisaje como este antes, y como había neblina en el abismo y caía una ligera llovizna, todo se veía más intrigante.

At the edges of these large volcanic depressions, there are trails for observing them from different points and also for exploring the surrounding Scalesia forests.

En los bordes de estas grandes depresiones volcánicas hay senderos para observarlas desde diferentes puntos y también para explorar los bosques de Scalesia que las rodean.

Scalesia is a plant endemic to the Galapagos Islands, meaning that it only exists in this archipelago. Its genus has 15 species, most of which are shrubs, with only three being trees.

La Scalesia es una planta endémica de las Islas Galápagos, lo que significa que sólo existe en este archipiélago. Su género cuenta con 15 especies, la mayoría de las cuales son arbustos, y sólo tres son árboles.

This plant is protected, and there are programs to cultivate and transplant it, as it has disappeared from several parts of the islands. During the tour, my guide was Mr. Taxi driver himself, who kindly took some photos of me as well 😄.

Esta planta está protegida y existen programas para cultivarla y trasplantarla, ya que ha desaparecido de varias partes de las islas. Durante la excursión, mi guía fue el propio señor taxista, que amablemente también me hizo algunas fotos 😄.

Los Gemelos or collapse craters, are an incredible landscape to explore and photograph, don't you think?

Los Gemelos o cráteres de colapso son un paisaje increíble para explorar y fotografiar, ¿no creen?

These abysses are not only home to lush vegetation, but also to many animals, especially birds. I saw several, but this time I couldn't photograph any of them because they were restless.

Estos abismos no solo albergan una exuberante vegetación, sino también muchos animales, especialmente aves. Vi varias, pero esta vez no pude fotografiar ninguna porque estaban inquietas.
