Observing everyday life at the fishing pier in Puerto Ayora, Galapagos Islands - The Ecuador diary / Observando la cotidianidad en el muelle de los pescadores de Puerto Ayora, Islas Galápagos - El diario de Ecuador

Traveling isn't just about having fun and visiting incredible landscapes. For me, it's also an opportunity to see what daily life is like for people in those tourist towns and cities, allowing us to get closer to their culture and customs and feel the pulse of those places more genuinely.

Viajar no es solamente divertirse y visitar paisajes increíbles. Para mí, también es una oportunidad para ver cómo es la vida cotidiana de las personas en esos pueblos y ciudades turísticos, lo que nos permite acercarnos a su cultura y costumbres y sentir el pulso de esos lugares de una forma más auténtica.

During my stay in this archipelago, on Santa Cruz Island, I passed by the fishermen's pier in Puerto Ayora several times, and each time I stopped to watch. Other foreign travelers did the same, because for us, extraordinary things were happening there.

Durante mi estadía en este archipiélago, en la isla Santa Cruz, pasé varias veces por el muelle de los pescadores en Puerto Ayora, y todas las veces me detuve a observar. Otros viajeros extranjeros hacían lo mismo, porque para nosotros allí pasaban cosas extraordinarias.

Like any fishing pier anywhere in the world, there was a lot of activity there. The fishermen were arranging and cleaning the merchandise to be sold, and the people who had come to buy were looking at what fish they were going to take home.

Como en cualquier muelle pesquero del mundo, había mucho movimiento allí. Los pescadores acomodando y limpiando la mercancía a vender y las personas que habían ido a comprar mirando qué pescado se iban a llevar.

And then there were us tourists, moving around everywhere to take photos and wondering what kinds of fish were there. I saw several that were unfamiliar to me, but the one that caught my attention the most was this orange one with black spots and bulging eyes that you can see in the next photo. It is known as the witch fish and is endemic to the Galapagos Islands. I had the opportunity to try it and it is very tasty.

Y luego estábamos nosotros, los turistas, moviéndonos por todos lados para fotografiar y preguntándonos qué pescados había allí. Vi varios desconocidos para mí, pero el que más me llamó la atención fue este anaranjado con manchas negras y ojos brotados que ven en la siguiente foto. Se le conoce como pez brujo y es endémico de las Islas Galápagos. Tuve la oportunidad de probarlo y es muy sabroso.

Fishing is a very important economic activity for the inhabitants of Santa Cruz Island. It is carried out using traditional methods and small boats, and supplies the local, national, and even international markets. Some of the species caught include witchfish, cod, yellowfin tuna, lobster, and sea cucumber.

La pesca es una actividad económica muy importante para los habitantes de la isla Santa Cruz. Se realiza de manera artesanal y en embarcaciones pequeñas, y abastece el mercado local, nacional e incluso internacional. Algunas de las especies que se capturan son el pez brujo, el bacalao, el atún aleta amarilla, langosta y el pepino de mar.

In addition to seeing fish that were unusual to me, the most striking thing about this place is the presence of local wildlife.

Además de ver peces que me resultaban desconocidos, lo más llamativo de este lugar es la presencia de fauna autóctona.

While it is true that pelicans are commonly seen at fishing docks, waiting to eat leftovers, here there are many other birds and animals that are emblematic of these islands, such as sea lions and iguanas. And that is something you don't see just anywhere.

Si bien es cierto que es común ver sobre todo pelícanos en los muelles pesqueros, esperando para comer las sobras, aquí se suman muchas otras aves y animales emblemáticos de estas islas como los lobos marinos y las iguanas. Y eso sí que no se ve en cualquier parte.

This interaction between humans and animals was fascinating to watch. Most of the wildlife in the Galapagos Islands is not afraid of people, but at this pier, something closer can be perceived: a friendship.

Fue fascinante observar esta interacción entre humanos y animales. La mayoría de los animales salvajes de las Islas Galápagos no temen a las personas, pero en este muelle se percibe algo más estrecho: una amistad.

I felt that this spontaneous spectacle reflected the relationship of respect and cooperation that exists between the people and wildlife of this archipelago. It is something that defines Galapagos culture, and I loved it.

Me pareció que este espectáculo espontáneo es un reflejo de la relación de respeto y cooperación que existe entre las personas y la fauna silvestre de este archipiélago. Es algo que define a la cultura galapagueña, y me encantó.
