La Loberia, a beach where you can interact with the sea lions of the Galapagos Islands - The Ecuador diary 🦭 🌊 La Lobería, una playa donde puedes interactuar con los lobos marinos de las Islas Galápagos - El diario de Ecuador

Seeing animals in their natural habitat was the main reason I wanted to visit the legendary Galapagos Islands, and as soon as I set foot there, that's exactly what happened. I encountered the incredible giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and Darwin's finches, some of the most iconic creatures of this archipelago, but I was still missing the sea lion.

Ver animales en su hábitat natural era la razón principal por la que quería visitar las legendarias Islas Galápagos, y apenas puse un pie allí, eso fue exactamente lo que sucedió. Me encontré con las increíbles tortugas gigantes, iguanas marinas y pinzones de Darwin, algunas de las criaturas más emblemáticas de este archipiélago, pero aún me faltaba ver el lobo marino.

So, on my third day there, I decided to take a tour to see them. This tour, offered by several agencies on Santa Cruz Island, where I was staying, lasted all day and took me to San Cristobal Island, which is about an hour and a half away by boat.

Así que, en mi tercer día allí, decidí hacer una excursión para verlos. Este tour que ofrecen varias agencias en la isla Santa Cruz, donde me estaba alojando, duró todo el día, y me llevó a la isla San Cristóbal, que está como a una hora y media en barco.

When we arrived in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the main town on this island and administrative headquarters of the Galapagos Islands, we were greeted by sea lions. What excellent hosts!

Cuando llegamos a Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, la principal ciudad de esta isla y sede administrativa de las Islas Galápagos, nos recibieron los lobos marinos. ¡Qué excelentes anfitriones!

Of the 13 large islands in the Galapagos, only five are inhabited. Santa Cruz Island has the largest population with around 17,000 people, and San Cristobal is second with around 5,000.

De las 13 islas grandes de las Galápagos, sólo cinco están habitadas. La isla Santa Cruz es la que más población tiene, con unos 17.000 habitantes, y San Cristóbal con unos 5.000, ocupa el segundo lugar.

The excursion began with our transfer to La Loberia, a beach famous on this island for the large number of sea lions that come there. We got into the van that was waiting for us and arrived in less than 10 minutes. Our group was small, about 15 people.

La excursión comenzó con nuestro traslado hacia La Lobería, una playa famosa en esta isla por la gran cantidad de lobos marinos que llegan allí. Nos montamos en la camioneta que nos esperaba y en menos de 10 minutos llegamos. Nuestro grupo era pequeño, unas 15 personas.

We immediately saw these beautiful animals on the beach, some sleeping, others relaxing or swimming, and not at all afraid of us humans.

Inmediatamente vimos a estos hermosos animales en la playa, algunos durmiendo, otros relajándose o nadando, y sin ningún miedo hacia nosotros, los humanos.

The Galapagos sea lion (Zalophus wollebaeki) can be seen on almost all the islands in the archipelago, but one of its main colonies is on San Cristobal Island.

El lobo marino de Galápagos (Zalophus wollebaeki) puede ser visto en casi todas las islas del archipiélago, pero una de sus colonias principales está en la isla San Cristóbal.

We walked among them, and many approached us with their characteristic funny movements 😊. I think the curiosity was mutual, even though they are used to people visiting and interacting with them.

Caminamos entre ellos y muchos se nos acercaban con esos movimientos graciosos que los caracterizan 😊. Creo que la curiosidad era mutua, a pesar de que están acostumbrados a que la gente los visite e interactúe con ellos.

Sea lions are undoubtedly very friendly animals. Many of us talked to them, and they also made sounds as if responding to us.

Sin duda los lobos marinos son animales muy simpáticos. Muchos de nosotros les hablamos y ellos también emitían sus sonidos como respondiéndonos.

Then the guide told us that we were going to continue along a trail that would take us to some volcanic cliffs, where we could see more wildlife, especially birds and reptiles.

Luego el guía nos dijo que íbamos a continuar por un sendero que nos llevaría a unos acantilados volcánicos, donde podríamos ver más fauna, sobre todo aves y reptiles.

Here I encountered the charismatic marine iguanas again. Some had a reddish hue to their bodies, which made it easier to distinguish them from the black rocks that abound in this geography.

Aquí volví a encontrarme con las carismáticas iguanas marinas. Algunas tenían una tonalidad rojiza en sus cuerpos, lo que facilitaba distinguirlas de las rocas negras que abundan en esta geografía.

I found this coastal landscape, with its contrast of deep blue waters and black rocks, spectacular.

Este paisaje costero, con su contraste entre las aguas azul intenso y las rocas negras, me pareció espectacular.

And there, on the rocks and in the sky, we were able to observe several species of birds.

Y allí, sobre las rocas y en el cielo, pudimos observar varias especies de aves.

These cliffs, shaped by volcanic forces, are breeding grounds for many birds, such as red-footed and blue-footed boobies.

Estos acantilados moldeados por el poder volcánico, son sitios de reproducción de muchas aves, como los piqueros de patas rojas y patas azules.

We continued our adventure to another beach where there were also sea lions. There, anyone who wanted to could go in and swim with them. Of course, I wasn't going to miss out on that experience!

Continuamos nuestra aventura hacia otra playa donde también había lobos marinos. Allí el que quería podía meterse al agua y nadar con ellos. ¡Por supuesto, yo no iba a perderme esa experiencia!

It's in the water where you can best observe their behavior and also have fun with them. At first, I felt a little intimidated, because even though they are friendly, when they open their mouths, they have very sharp teeth 😂.

En el agua es donde mejor puedes observar su comportamiento y también divertirte con ellos. Al principio me sentí un poco intimidada, porque aunque son amigables, cuando abren la boca tienen unos dientes muy afilados 😂.

The guide gave us snorkel masks so we could see them and the sea turtles and fish that are also there. Sea lions are so agile in the water! They approached me at great speed and then turned to avoid colliding with me, they surrounded me, spun around, it looked like they were laughing when they opened their mouths... In short, they were playing with us. It was a magical experience, and I regretted not having a waterproof camera to take pictures of them underwater, but hey, those images will always be in my head 😉.

El guía nos dio unas máscaras para hacer snorkel y poder verlos a ellos y a las tortugas marinas y peces que también hay allí. ¡Los lobos marinos son tan ágiles en el agua! Se me acercaban a una gran velocidad y luego giraban para no chocar conmigo, me rodeaban, daban vueltas, parecía que se reían cuando abrían la boca… En fin, estaban jugando con nosotros. Fue una experiencia mágica y lamenté no tener una cámara a prueba de agua para poder tomarles fotos bajo el agua, pero bueno, esas imágenes estarán siempre en mi cabeza 😉.

After about an hour of swimming, the excursion continued to a completely different place. We ate something and then got into the van to go see El Junco Lagoon, or so we thought.

Después de más o menos una hora nadando, la excursión siguió hacia un lugar totalmente diferente. Comimos algo y luego nos montamos en la camioneta para ir a conocer la laguna El Junco, o eso creíamos.

We reached the start of a trail and began to climb. The weather changed; it was very cloudy, drizzling, and muddy.

Llegamos al inicio de un sendero y comenzamos a subir. El clima cambió; estaba muy nublado, lloviznaba y había mucho lodo.

El Junco Lagoon is 700 meters above sea level and is one of the few sources of fresh water in the Galapagos Islands.

La laguna El Junco está a 700 metros sobre el nivel de mar y es una de las pocas fuentes de agua dulce de las Islas Galápagos.

We were told that there are many birds there and you can also see endemic vegetation, such as ferns and miconias.

Nos dijeron que allí hay muchas aves y se puede ver también vegetación endémica, como helechos y miconias.

Of course, if the weather permits, because it's usually cloudy, and that's how it was for us too. When we arrived, we couldn't see almost anything. The fog lifted for a moment and we could barely make out the lagoon 😆, and that was it.

Claro, si el tiempo lo permite, porque suele estar nublado, y así nos tocó también. Cuando llegamos no se veía casi nada. La niebla se disipó por un momento y apenas pudimos distinguir la laguna 😆, y eso fue todo.
