With my stomach satisfied after visiting the traditional La Boqueria market on La Rambla, my stroll through Barcelona continued towards the famous Gothic Quarter, which is just a few steps away.
This time, my friend Nubi, who gave me accommodation in the city, was able to accompany me. We met when I left the market and walked along La Rambla for a while, looking at its curiosities at the kiosks. Since she knew the place, she guided me through the most interesting points, so I walked around relaxed without looking at maps or anything 😄.
The medieval atmosphere envelops you immediately upon arrival. In my travel guide, I read that the origins of the Gothic Quarter date back to Roman times (1st century BC), to the early colony of Barcino. The Roman wall was built there in the 3rd century AD, which gave Barcelona economic and military dominance and led to the development of this monumental area in subsequent centuries.
Of course, the architecture is what stands out here, with impressive buildings appearing after walking through mysterious and narrow streets.
This neighborhood has original medieval buildings, erected between the 13th and 15th centuries, when the Gothic style was booming in Europe, and you can also see Neo-Gothic works, made at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
One of the buildings that impressed me most is the Bishop's Bridge, on the street called Carrer del Bisbe. Later I learned that it is one of the most emblematic places in the Gothic Quarter, and that it is not that old, it was built in 1928.
This neo-Gothic walkway connects two places: the Palau de la Generalitat with the Casa dels Canonges.

Modern and contemporary items also find their way into souvenir and collectible shops here. How about a figurine of Elvis, Lennon, or James Brown?
Our walk continued down several more streets, the ones that caught my eye. I think this is the best way to explore a historic place like this: just letting yourself be led.
One thing I really enjoyed here was observing and photographing both the architecture and the movement of people. The old buildings and the modern life create a very attractive contrast.
Because it's the oldest part of Barcelona, almost the entire Gothic Quarter is very crowded, but I also had the opportunity to wander through less busy, almost empty streets.
And look what I found over there: absinthe! I've never tried this alcoholic beverage, but I've read about it, and it was banned for a long time in many parts of the world because of various myths about its effects.
We were finishing our walk around the area and my friend told me it was a good idea to have a drink, that there was a really good place nearby, so we went.
Not only did they serve drinks there, but they also had plenty of snacks or tapas to go with them. It was pretty crowded, but the service was fast, we didn't have to wait long for our order.
The drink wasn't absinthe 😁, it was kind of fruity, but I can't remember the name... See you next time!

Thank you so much! 😊
it is always so nice to have a local friend show you around so you do not have to stress over a map. that Bishop's Bridge looks genuinely medieval even if it is from 1928
Having a friend in a city you're visiting is definitely great 😉. Yes, that bridge is an example of the Neo-Gothic style, of which there are many other buildings around there.
Thank you! 😊
