El Chato Reserve, a place to walk among the famous giant tortoises of the Galapagos Islands - The Ecuador diary 🐢 🐢 Reserva El Chato, un lugar para caminar entre las famosas tortugas gigantes de las Islas Galápagos - El diario de Ecuador

After visiting the collapse craters and lava tunnels in the upper part of Santa Cruz Island, the third and final stop on this tour with a taxi driver-guide was El Chato Ecological Reserve. Located in the Santa Rosa area, where there are several haciendas, this private space gives you the opportunity to observe the famous giant tortoises of the Galapagos Islands in their natural habitat.

Después de conocer los cráteres de colapso y los túneles de lava en la parte alta de la isla Santa Cruz, el tercer y último lugar que incluía este tour que hice con un taxista-guía, fue a la Reserva Ecológica El Chato. Ubicado en la zona de Santa Rosa, donde hay varias haciendas, este espacio privado te da la oportunidad de observar las famosas tortugas gigantes de las Islas Galápagos en su hábitat natural.

Although on my first day in this archipelago I was able to see these amazing animals at the Charles Darwin Research Station, the experience at El Chato is totally different because the tortoises are not confined to limited spaces or behind fences. Here, they roam freely and you can walk among them.

Aunque en mi primer día en este archipiélago pude ver a estos asombrosos animales en la Estación Científica Charles Darwin, la experiencia en El Chato es totalmente diferente porque las tortugas no están confinadas en espacios limitados ni detrás de cercas. Aquí deambulan libremente y puedes caminar entre ellas.

For those of us who love seeing animals in the wild, this place is a must-see. When I arrived, I paid the entrance fee, which if I remember correctly was $3, and they gave me some information and the rules (don't get too close to the turtles and don't touch them, of course), and I began my walk through the reserve, which covers an area of 12 hectares.

Para los que amamos ver animales en libertad, este lugar es una visita obligada. Al llegar pagué la entrada, que si mal no recuerdo me costó 3 dólares, me dieron información y la normativa (no acercarse demasiado a las tortugas y tampoco tocarlas, por supuesto), y comencé mi paseo por la reserva, que tiene una superficie de 12 hectáreas.

The current conservation status of Galapagos giant tortoises is critical. Many subspecies have become extinct, and those that remain are endangered.

El estado actual de conservación de las tortugas gigantes de Galápagos es crítico. Muchas subespecies se han extinguido y las que quedan están en peligro.

When these islands were discovered by Europeans in 1535, it is estimated that there was a population of more than 200,000 turtles. But sailors and pirates of that era hunted them extensively for their meat, and the number of individuals declined dramatically.

Cuando estas islas fueron descubiertas por los europeos en 1535, se estima que había una población de más de 200.000 tortugas. Sin embargo, los marineros y piratas de la época las cazaron intensamente por su carne, y el número de ejemplares disminuyó drásticamente.

They were then threatened by introduced or invasive species, and in recent years also by climate change. Since 1965, there has been a captive breeding program for their subsequent release, and thanks to this, their population has increased and is currently estimated at around 15,000 turtles.

Luego se vieron amenazadas por especies introducidas o invasoras, y los últimos años también por el cambio climático. Desde 1965 existe un programa de cría en cautiverio para su posterior liberación y gracias a eso se ha logrado incrementar su población, que actualmente se estima en unas 15.000 tortugas.

I thoroughly enjoyed this walk with them, observing every detail of their enormous bodies with such a prehistoric appearance.

Disfruté muchísimo de este paseo junto a ellas, observando cada detalle de sus enormes cuerpos de aspecto tan prehistórico.

Apart from their size, which can exceed 400 kg and measure more than 1.5 meters, Galapagos giant tortoises are also famous for their longevity. Their organisms possess a mechanism that repairs DNA, which may be why they can live up to 200 years.

Además de su tamaño, que puede superar los 400 kg y medir más de 1,5 metros, las tortugas gigantes de Galápagos también son famosas por su longevidad. Sus organismos poseen un mecanismo que repara el ADN, quizás por eso pueden vivir hasta 200 años.

Another thing I found interesting about them is their importance in the fragile ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands. These tortoises act as gardeners, helping to spread seeds through their digestive tract, thereby maintaining biodiversity and plant regeneration.

Otra cosa que me pareció interesante sobre ellas es su importancia en el frágil ecosistema de las Islas Galápagos. Estas tortugas actúan como jardineras, ayudando a esparcir semillas a través de su tracto digestivo, lo que contribuye a mantener la biodiversidad y la regeneración de las plantas.

During this tour of the reserve, I saw them walking, eating, resting, sleeping... And I think they observed me too 😊.

Durante este recorrido por la reserva las vi caminando, comiendo, descansando, durmiendo... Y creo que ellas también me observaron a mí 😊.

The El Chato Ecological Reserve also has an educational area where interesting information about giant tortoises is displayed, along with exhibits such as skeletal remains and shells.

La Reserva Ecológica El Chato también cuenta con un área educativa donde se muestra información interesante sobre las tortugas gigantes, junto con exhibiciones como restos óseos y caparazones.

And to finish off this fabulous tour, I didn't want to miss the opportunity to step into the skin of this extraordinary creature, or rather, into its shell. Wouldn't you have done the same?
