I had already figured out how to get there and took the metro. I got off at the indicated station, whose name I can't remember now, and went up some outdoor escalators. I had never seen anything like it before, that super steep street is called Baixada de la Glòria.
When you get to the top, there's a viewpoint with spectacular views of various parts of Barcelona. And of course, I stopped there for a few minutes to take some photos.
From there you can see, for example, La Sagrada Familia and the Torre Glòries (formerly Agbar), a 144-meter skyscraper.
Don't you think it looks phallic? 😆
¿No les parece que tiene forma fálica? 😆
Park Güell has three entrances: the main one (on Carrer d’Olot), one on Carretera del Carmel, and one on Passage de Sant Josep de la Muntanya. Since I went up the street on the escalators, I entered through the latter, which is in the upper area, so I had an excellent panoramic view of the park.
My first impression was that everything looked like something out of a fairy tale. This design, like the Sagrada Familia, is by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí.
When I went, admission was free, but I saw online that they now charge a fee. I started my tour of the park without any specific plan, I just wandered freely through the different areas. That’s how I ended up at the Plaza de la Naturaleza (Nature Square), a Greek theater that serves as the roof of the Hypostyle Hall, supported by 86 Doric columns.
That square is also a fantastic viewpoint, and it features a large, wavy-shaped bench covered with small ceramic pieces or trencadís mosaics featuring various designs.
Beyond the fact that this park was a masterpiece by Gaudí, I didn't have any further information about it, so being there and seeing all this, of course I was interested in learning how this project with so many interesting areas and such creative designs came about.
Its construction, which began in 1900 and ended in 1914, was commissioned by the businessman Eusebi Güell to his friend Gaudí. Originally, the project was a private housing development for wealthy people, but the sale of the plots was unsuccessful, and years later, in 1926, it was inaugurated as a public park.
As for its design, Güell wanted it to be in the style of 19th-century English garden cities, which is why the word “park” (in English) was also included in its name.
Look at the columns and ceiling of the Hypostyle Hall. This area was intended to be the market area of the urbanization.
Mosaics are repeated in many of the park's structures. In the Monumental Zone, which is the park's impressive entrance, we see them, for example, on the Dragon Staircase, with its fountain and the sculpture of a salamander.
The brochures said that Park Güell is perhaps Gaudí’s most imaginative work, and that is surely true. It seems that here he fully expressed his Modernism (a movement of which he was a leading figure), by integrating curved and colorful architectural designs inspired by nature with other arts such as sculpture and painting.
I continued my walk and a series of rustic stone columns appeared before me, this is the Washerwoman's Portico, a structure inspired by the shape of a large wave. It is named so because it is dedicated to the working women of the time when it was built. There is a sculpture of a washerwoman there.
There are so many details here and there that it is quite difficult to see them all in one visit. It is definitely a place to return to several times.
Although there were quite a few people in the park, because it is large, in the more secluded areas you wouldn't find anyone, so it was possible to appreciate everything better.
It was in those areas that I was able to stop more calmly and take pictures of Gaudí's incredible architectural designs.
Look at the Gaudian Viaducts, aren't they fascinating structures? 😲
Then I returned to Plaza de la Naturaleza to admire the cityscape in the light of the setting sun. From there you can also see the Gaudí House-Museum, where the architect lived for several years.
I saved the entrance pavilions for last, two houses that look like they're made of gingerbread 😋.
I hope you found this tour interesting 😉. Until the next one!

Those outdoor escalators on Baixada de la Glòria sound like a workout to start the day. Walking through Gaudí architecture really does feel like stepping straight into a fantasy book.
Yes 😆, for me, trips always involve a lot of exercise, especially long walks. I'm glad you liked it, it's an extraordinary place!
