A couple of days in Montañita, a surfer town - The Ecuador diary 🏄 🌊 Un par de días en Montañita, un pueblo surfista - El diario de Ecuador
The chance to see a variety of landscapes while traveling is always appealing, and during my trip through Ecuador, I had that opportunity. Being in cities, then went to islands, then to the mountains, and again beaches... After four days in Cuenca, with its Andean region and cool climate, I took a bus and headed to Guayaquil.
Tener la posibilidad de conocer paisajes variados durante un viaje siempre es algo atractivo, y durante mi recorrido por Ecuador tuve esa oportunidad. Estar en ciudades, luego ir a islas, después a montañas, y otra vez playas... Tras cuatro días en Cuenca, región andina y clima frío, tomé un autobús y me fui a Guayaquil.
I left the Cuenca bus station around 9:30 in the morning, and the trip to the Guayaquil bus station took almost four hours. I would have liked to see that city as well, but if I had included it, I wouldn’t have had time to visit the nature destinations I had marked on my itinerary. Upon arriving at the Guayaquil bus station, I immediately bought a ticket to my next destination, and a short while later I was on another bus heading to Montañita.
Salí como a las 9:30 de la mañana del terminal de Cuenca, y el viaje hasta el terminal de Guayaquil duró casi cuatro horas. Me hubiese gustado conocer también esa ciudad, pero si la incluía no me iba a dar tiempo para visitar los destinos de naturaleza que tenía marcados en mi itinerario. Al llegar al terminal de Guayaquil, inmediatamente compré el boleto hacia mi siguiente destino, y un rato después estaba tomando otro autobús para llegar a Montañita.
About two and a half hours later, I arrived. Montañita is a small coastal town, famous for surfing, located in the province of Santa Elena. I hadn’t booked a place to stay, so the first thing I did when I got off the bus was look for a guesthouse. It was past 5:00 p.m., and I didn’t want to end up without a roof over my head by nightfall 😄. Fortunately, I didn’t have to walk far, I found a private room in a nice hostel at an affordable price, and I stayed there for a couple of days.
Unas dos horas y media después, llegué. Montañita es un pequeño pueblo costero, famoso por el surf, que queda en la provincia de Santa Elena. No tenía reservado el alojamiento, así que buscar una posada fue lo primero que hice al bajar del autobús. Eran más de las 5:00 de la tarde, y no quería anochecer sin techo 😄. Afortunadamente no tuve que caminar mucho, encontré una habitación privada en un bonito hostal a un precio económico, y allí me quedé un par de días.
I unpacked my things in the room, took a shower, and then went out to find a place to eat. It was already getting dark, so I didn't go far. The next day, I set out early to explore the town and, of course, I went to check out the beach.
Acomodé mis cosas en la habitación, me di un baño y luego salí a buscar un sitio para comer. Ya estaba oscureciendo, así que no fui lejos. Al día siguiente, desde temprano, me dediqué a recorrer el pueblo y por supuesto fui a conocer la playa.
The weather wasn't beachy at all, there was no sun, and to me, that took away some of the place's charm. Running alongside the hostel was the river that flows through the town until it empties into the sea.
El clima no estaba para nada playero, no había sol, y para mí eso le quitaba un poco de ambiente al lugar. A un lado del hostal pasaba el río que cruza el pueblo hasta desembocar al mar.
I went to the busiest streets in town, but of course, that’s at night, in the morning, it was very quiet there.
Fui hasta las calles más concurridas del pueblo, pero claro, eso es en las noches, en la mañana estaba todo muy tranquilo allí.
The town's streets are made of dirt or sand, so anyone who wants to can walk barefoot. There are plenty of bars, nightclubs, and restaurants, and the nightlife is very lively. And this, combined with the surfing, is what has made Montañita famous.
Las calles del pueblo son de tierra o arena, así que el que quiera puede andar descalzo. Hay muchos bares, discotecas, restaurantes, una vida nocturna muy activa. Y esto, combinado con el surf es lo que le ha dado fama a Montañita.
I walked through most of the streets and then headed to the beach. The sky was still cloudy, and since it was still early, there was hardly anyone there. Partying and staying up late really take their toll here 😂, people don't start showing up until after noon.
Caminé por gran parte de sus calles y luego me fui a la playa. El cielo seguía nublado, y como aún era temprano, no había casi nadie. La fiesta y el trasnocho hacen estragos aquí 😂, después del mediodía es que empieza a aparecer gente.
Many athletes come here to test the waves, and there are also people who come to take lessons. In addition, Montañita hosts many national and international surfing competitions.
Hay muchos atletas que vienen a probar las olas y también personas que vienen a tomar clases. Además, en Montañita se hacen muchas competencias nacionales e internacionales de surf.
The beach is quite wide, and of course I walked its entire length. At one end, the less touristy one, I suppose, there were several collapsed buildings and lots of graffiti on the rubble. With the clouds, and that light, the scene looked pretty sinister. What do you think?
La playa es bastante amplia, y por supuesto la caminé completa. En uno de sus extremos, el menos turístico supongo, había varias construcciones derrumbadas y muchos grafitis en esos escombros. Con las nubes que había, y esa luz, este escenario se veía bastante siniestro. ¿Qué opinan?
I stayed in that area for a while taking photos. I also relaxed on the sand. I wanted to go in the water, that was my plan when I came to the beach, but honestly, with that kind of weather, I just didn’t feel like it. When I got back to the main area, there were already quite a few people there and the atmosphere was livelier. Even though I didn’t go in, I did dip my legs in up to my knees, the water was a bit cold.
Me quedé un rato por esa zona tomando fotos. También me relajé en la arena. Quería meterme al agua, ese era mi plan al visitar la playa, pero de verdad que con ese clima no me dieron ganas. Cuando volví al área principal ya había bastante gente y el ambiente estaba más animado. Aunque no me bañé si metí las piernas hasta las rodillas, el agua estaba algo fría.
I went to grab some lunch and then continued exploring the beach all the way to the other end, called La Punta, which is where the surfers hang out.
Me fui a almorzar algo y después continué explorando la playa hasta el otro extremo, llamado La Punta, que es donde se concentran los surfistas.
There were several people surfing there, and I spent quite a while trying to take some photos. Surfing is definitely not easy! I had a lot of fun watching them. It’s exciting when they manage to ride the waves until they wash them up on the shore.
Había varios practicando allí y pasé un buen rato tratando de tomar algunas fotos. ¡Definitivamente no es nada fácil surfear! Me divertí mucho viéndolos. Es emocionante cuando logran montarse en las olas hasta que estas los sacan a la orilla.
When I got back to the hostel, I found two cute little creatures playing on the balcony outside my room. I opened the door, and they slept with me that night 😻. The next day, an amazing excursion awaited me, full of nature and wildlife, which I’ll show you in my next post. Until then!

Tampoco me gusta bañarme en la playa cuando el clima esta nublado, prefiero quedarme mirando las olas desde lejos.
Es que Ecuador tiene que tener eso de la Gran Colombia: diversidad de ecosistemas paradisíacos, como pa no aburrirse visitando, lo tengo pendiente y me parece un destino súper atractivo.
Aunque el tiempo siempre se hace bastante corto viajando, hay que maximizar experiencias y ser selectivo. Lo que pasa es que uno se queda con la espinita de hacer escala en un sitio y no pasearlo, es como que… ¿eso cuenta como visita o no? jajaja
Uy a mí me gustan mucho las playas que tienen ríos que desembocan en ella, es un gran alivio después de estar un buen rato en agua salada, poder sentir el agua dulce.
En las fotos del pueblo se ve una tienda que se llama MAMA PACHA y justo cerca de donde estoy hay algo llamado Pacha mama, antes de esto nunca había escuchado esa frase ¡mira tú qué curioso!
En donde hay surferos, hay vida nocturna y locura jajaja yo nunca he terminado de entender los pueblitos surferos, creo que me hace falta experiencia para agarrarles gustos. ¿Tú los prefieres a una playa más normalita?
como para grabar un videito de terror a falta de vida en el pueblo jaja.
