My Walk Through the Monument (Eng/Esp)

The statue of the Indigenous Man and the friar is an indisputable symbol of Cumana and is located in what is known as the Monument Area, specifically on Cacique Maragüey Avenue. As I mentioned in my previous post, this monument was unveiled in 1965 to celebrate the city’s 450th anniversary.

The statue has a fairly clear meaning: it represents the union of two worlds. The Indigenous man pays homage to the local indigenous peoples, such as the Cumanagotos and the Chaimas, while the friar represents the process of evangelization carried out by both the Franciscan and Dominican monks. You can also see the dynamism of the sculpture, as both figures seem to be engaged in a conversation, which has sparked several jokes over the decades.

Up close, the statue still looks imposing. Several years ago, there was a nightclub here called Los Castillitos, as well as a seafood restaurant right at the foot of the statue, and a large playground with many swings. But all that remains of those days are memories.

The restaurant became the “Cumana” Coast Guard substation, a military unit responsible for preventing crimes at sea, such as smuggling, overfishing, and engine theft. Meanwhile, the nightclub’s facilities now serve as the headquarters of the National Guard.

The pictures speak for themselves when it comes to the park: salt and the elements have corroded the metal and wood of the swings and other playground equipment. Although this area looks quite run-down, a new space with new exercise equipment was later opened.

La estatua del Indio y del fraile es un símbolo indiscutible de Cumaná y se encuentra ubicada en lo que se conoce como la zona del Monumento, específicamente en la avenida Cacique Maragüey. Como lo dije en mi post anterior, esta obra se inauguró en 1965 para celebrar los 450 años de la ciudad.

La estatua tiene un significado bastante claro, es la unión de dos mundos, el indio rinde homenaje a los pueblos originarios locales, tales como los Cumanagotos y los Chaimas, en tanto el fraile representa el proceso de evangelización realizado tanto por los monjes franciscanos como por los dominicos. Se puede observar además el dinamismo de la obra ya que ambas figuras parecen sostener un diálogo, lo que ha originado varios chistes a lo largo de las décadas.

Vista de cerca, la estatua aún luce imponente. Hace varios años atrás, en este lugar funcionaba una discoteca llamada Los Castillitos, también un restaurante de especialidades marinas, justo al pie de esta obra, también funcionaba un gran parque infantil con muchos columpios. Pero de todo eso lo que quedan son recuerdos.

El restaurante pasó a ser la estación secundaria de guardacostas "Cumaná", unidad operativa militar que se encarga de prevenir delitos en el mar, como el contrabando, la pesca indiscriminada y el robo de motores. Por su parte, las instalaciones de la discoteca ahora funcionan como sede de la Guardia Nacional.

Las imágenes hablan solas en lo que se refiere al parque, el salitre y la interperie destruyeron el metal y la madera de los columpios y otros aparatos. Si bien esta área luce bastante deteriorada, más adelante inauguraron un espacio donde se ubicaron nuevos aparatos para ejercitarse.
