My Visit to the Lions Club (Eng/Esp)

The first time I visited the Lions Club headquarters in Cumana was out of curiosity; an Expoferia had been set up there, and the event was being advertised on the radio. It was easy to get there because the last stop on the bus line heading to the Monument was right across the street. Later, I went back there for the ZC Miniteca’s performance, as well as one by El Conde del Guacharo, and two weddings. This venue has a large banquet hall, where various events—such as charity raffles and dance bingos—are currently held.

Over time, I learned that the Lions Club isn’t just a physical space but an international nonprofit organization focused on humanitarian service—which is why they offer free medical consultations and hold health fairs where they distribute medication to those most in need. The lively parties and public transportation to the entrance are now a thing of the past.

I returned to that place today to find out more about the activities that usually take place there, since there’s a preschool on the premises. I was able to walk around the place, and it’s just as I remember it, with spacious areas for holding large gatherings and even a bolas criollas court inside. From here, you can see the beach peeking out from behind Perimetral Avenue.

My memories of this place are tied to lively celebrations, but now I see it from a different perspective. All you can see now is the large, empty hall and just a few people waiting to be seen in the examination rooms. The work these people do in offering free medical services to the community is truly commendable. That’s the beauty of walking around Cumaná—in this case, I rediscovered the Lions Club during one of my usual walks through the Monumento neighborhood.

La primera ocasión que visité la sede del Club de Leones en Cumaná fue por curiosidad, se había instalado una Expoferia y la publicidad era transmitida por la radio. Era fácil llegar allí porque al frente quedaba la última parada de la linea de autobuses que iban para el Monumento. Después fui nuevamente a ese lugar, para la presentación de la miniteca ZC, también para una del Conde del Guacharo, y a dos matrimonios. Este lugar posee un gran salón de fiestas, donde actualmente se suelen realizar diferentes eventos como loterías benéficas y bingos bailables.

Con el tiempo me enteré que el Club de Leones no es solamente un espacio físico sino que es una organización internacional sin fines de lucro enfocada en el servicio humanitario, de allí que ofrezcan consultas médicas gratuitas y además realizan jornadas de salud donde se entregan medicamentos a los más necesitados. Ya las fiestas bulliciosas y el transporte público hasta la entrada han quedado en el pasado.

Regresé hoy a ese lugar para indagar en las actividades que suelen realizarse, toda vez que allí funciona un preescolar. Pude recorrer el lugar y se mantiene tal como lo recuerdo, con amplios espacios para celebrar grandes reuniones y hasta posee una cancha de bolas criollas en su interior. Desde acá se puede apreciar la playa que se asoma tras la avenida Perimetral.

Mis recuerdos sobre este lugar se relacionan con celebraciones bulliciosas, es ahora cuando lo aprecio con otra perspectiva. El gran salón vacío y apenas unas personas esperando ser atendidas en los consultorios es lo único que se puede apreciar. Es realmente loable la labor de estas personas al ofrecer servicios médicos gratuitos para la comunidad. Es lo bueno de caminar y recorrer Cumaná ya que en este caso redescubrí el Club de Leones tras una de mis acostumbradas caminatas por el sector Monumento.
