Today I’m taking you on a different tour; we’ll explore the Cathedral of Cumaná, the city’s most imposing religious building, whose origins date back to the 18th century, though it has been remodeled several times due to earthquakes. Its location is significant, as it stands right in the heart of downtown, across from Andrés Eloy Blanco Square.

Originally, the cathedral was blue and white; later, those colors were replaced by a predominantly beige façade with blue accents—a combination that gives it an elegant appearance. Inside, this religious building is impressive, retaining its colonial charm, while externally it is distinguished by its Neoclassical design, a style mandated by the president at the time, Antonio Guzmán Blanco.

Throughout the tour, you can admire the beautiful woodwork. Art is also evident in the ceiling, the stained-glass windows, and the altars, where images brought from Spain stand out. No matter where you look, it’s impressive because everything gleams; the golden color shines, giving the sensation of standing before a priceless treasure, especially in front of the central altar.

The Cathedral continues to impress me; each of its sections is a showcase of art—whether painting, goldsmithing, sculpture, or architecture. The lighting, featuring lavish teardrop-shaped chandeliers, combined with the stained-glass windows and a soaring ceiling, helps accentuate the atmosphere of serenity and peace—ideal for offering prayers in the face of life’s challenges.

Ha, that blue and white start surprised me. A beige front with blue bits after all those earthquake rebuilds sounds lovely, and right in the middle of town too.
