Incredible views and unique trees (Eng/Esp)

When I want to breathe fresh air and take a walk surrounded by nature, I go to Guaqueri Park, the green lung of Cumana. What I like most is that the park is so spacious, so every time I visit, I explore new areas. This time, I focused my attention on the footbridges that cross the Manzanares River, which were built to provide access to the park from Aristiguieta Avenue.

These footbridges have been out of use for quite some time due to the deterioration of the metal structure over the years. While you can still see the colorful, artistic design on their sides, their faded appearance is a sign of neglect. Years ago, when they were first opened, people frequently used them to take the quickest route, as it avoided having to go all the way around the riverbank and along the Guzman Blanco Bridge.

It rarely rains in Cumana, but so far this June there have been several downpours, which is beneficial for green spaces, although one of the advantages of this place is that it has an irrigation system that draws water from the Manzanares River.

While I was taking photographs, one tree in particular caught my attention; it had thick thorns on its trunk, like spikes, which serve as its defense mechanism, and it is commonly known in Venezuela as the Ceiba. The trunk stores water, and in ancient times, for the Maya culture, it was a sacred tree that symbolized the union between heaven and earth.

From this vantage point, you have a spectacular view of the Santa Ines Church—the kind of scene often depicted in artistic paintings of the city. The afternoon was quite cool, and the birds’ melodious singing made the experience even more enjoyable; near the river, I spotted Cristofue, Black Thrushes, and White-cheeked Doves hopping from branch to branch.

From this new tour, I can attest that Inparques staff constantly monitor each area to ensure that visitors are not causing any damage to the infrastructure and, of course, to the local flora and fauna. If you’re looking to spend some time reflecting in a peaceful setting, Guaqueri Park is definitely the top choice in the city.

Cuando quiero respirar aire puro y dar un paseo rodeado de la naturaleza voy al parque Guaquerí, el pulmón vegetal de Cumaná. Lo que más me agrada es que el espacio es muy amplio, así que cada vez que vengo exploro nuevas zonas. Esta vez fijé mi atención en las pasarelas que atraviesan el Río Manzanares, las cuales se crearon para tener acceso al parque desde la Avenida Aristiguieta.

Estas pasarelas, desde hace bastante tiempo, están en deshuso debido al deterioro que ha presentado la estructura metálica con el paso del tiempo. Si bien aún se puede observar el diseño colorido, de arte cromático, en sus laterales, su tono descolorido es sinónimo de abandono. Años atrás, cuando se inauguraron, era muy frecuente utilizarlas para realizar el viaje más rápido ya que se evitaba dar la vuelta por la ribera del río y bordear por el puente Guzmán Blanco.

En Cumaná es poco frecuente que llueva, pero en lo que va de junio se han presentado varios aguaceros, lo que es beneficioso para las áreas verdes aunque uno de los privilegios de este lugar es contar con un sistema de riego que se aprovecha del caudal del Manzanares.

Cuando tomaba fotografías, un árbol en particular llamó mi atención, tenía espinas gruesas en su tronco, como puas, las cuales son su mecanismo de defensa y es conocido comúnmente en Venezuela como Ceiba. El tronco almacena agua y en la antigüedad, para la cultura maya, era un árbol sagrado que simbolizaba la unión entre el cielo y la tierra.

Desde esta perspectiva se tiene una vista privilegiada de la iglesia Santa Inés, de esas imágenes que suelen aparecer en pinturas artísticas sobre la ciudad. La tarde estaba bastante fresca y el cantar melodioso de los pájaros mejoraba la estadía, cerca del río se dejaban ver los Cristofué, Tordos Negros y Tortolitas, brincaban de una rama a otra.

De este nuevo recorrido puedo dar fe que el personal de Inparques constantemente supervisa cada área para verificar que los visitantes no están causando algún daño a la infraestructura y, por supuesto, a la flora y fauna presente en el lugar. Definitivamente si se quiere reflexionar un rato en medio de un ambiente de paz, el parque Guaquerí es la principal opción en la ciudad.
