Today I went to Gualberto Ibarreto Boulevard, a place that pays tribute to a renowned Venezuelan singer from Sucre State who was very popular in past decades. His unmistakable voice, characteristic hat, espadrilles, and cuatro in hand became a regional symbol; here, there is a replica of the singer-songwriter as he has been remembered by posterity, as well as another image of him sitting in a large hammock.

This boulevard is located at the entrance to the The Peñon community. It is quite wide and very colorful. We also find various green spaces and well-maintained gardens with striking flowers. In the center stands a giant hat that serves as a stage, where various public events have been held. In front of it are some bleachers, accessed by a staircase. The view from above is fantastic; you can see the entire perimeter, and the atmosphere is very colorful—a perspective that stimulates the senses.

This space holds great significance, as it serves as a living tribute to the cultural heritage of Sucre and Venezuela. Our grandparents grew up listening to Ibarreto’s songs: “The Gorrion,” “Maria Antonia,” “The Sancocho,” “The Letter,” “The Bikina,” “Cowardly Body,” “Canchunchu Florido,” “Thief of Your Love,” and many more, in which he demonstrated great versatility, moving with masterful ease from eastern joropo, galerón, and polo margariteño to romantic ballads.

I felt very comfortable in this place; it’s a kind of oasis because the boulevard is an island with traffic flowing on both sides, so while the world rushed by, I was here enjoying wholesome recreation, nature, and this tribute paid to a master of folklore.
