Fernandez of Serpa Square (Eng/Esp)

Today we visit Fernandez de Serpa Square, located in Cumana on the avenue of the same name. It is an iconic site in the city that pays tribute to a Spanish conquistador who was also the first governor of the Province of Nueva Andalucía and Paria, and who later, in 1569, refounded the city under the name of Cumana.

In this plaza there is a pedestal, but Serpa’s bust has been vandalized; however, one can still read: “Definitive repopulator of Gonzalo de Campo’s Nueva Toledo and Jacome Castellon’s Nueva Cordoba under the name of Cumana, 1959.” When I passed through this square, I realized it was undergoing extensive renovation; several workers were carrying out repairs, some chipping away at the ground and others painting the planters.

The square is shaped like an island, so you have to cross the avenue to reach it. Since it’s located across from the Santa Ana Children’s Clinic, some visitors wait there. It’s a quiet spot that also serves as a meeting place for people heading to the Sucre Polyclinic, the fire station, or the National Police Headquarters—all of which are located very close to the square.

I often passed through this area on my way to the Monument. From here, you can take in the urban landscape; the catch is that it’s an island, so you can’t bring children to run or play in this square due to the potential risk. I like walking along Fernandez de Serpa Avenue; there’s always activity on this road, and it also provides quick access to Perimetral Avenue and the Monument area, so the two routes are practically connected.

Hoy visitamos la plaza Fernández de Serpa situada en Cumaná, la cual se encuentra en la avenida del mismo nombre. Este es un sitio emblemático de la ciudad que rinde homenaje a un conquistador español que además fue el primer gobernador de la Provincia de Nueva Andalucía y Paria, para posteriormente, en 1569, refundar la ciudad con el nombre de Cumaná.

En esta plaza existe un pedestal, pero el busto de Serpa fue vandalizado, sin embargo, aún se puede leer; "Definitivo repoblador de la Nueva Toledo de Gónzalo de Campo y de la nueva Córdoba de Jacome Castellón con el nombre de Cumaná, 1959". Cuando pasé por esta plaza me di cuenta que estaba en plena remodelación, varios obreros realizaban reparaciones, unos picoteaban el piso y otros pintaban las jardineras.

La plaza tiene forma de isla, así que se debe cruzar la avenida para llegar a ella. Al estar ubicada frente a la Clínica Infantil Santa Ana, algunos visitantes del lugar permanecen allí esperando. Es un lugar tranquilo que también suele ser lugar de encuentro para quienes acuden a la Policlínica Sucre, la estación de Bomberos o la Comandancia de la Policía Nacional, instituciones que se ubican muy cerca de la plaza.

Muchas veces recorrí este lugar cuando me dirigía al Monumento. Desde acá se puede apreciar el paisaje urbano, el detalle está en que es una isla y por lo tanto no se pueden llevar niños para que corran o jueguen por esta plaza debido al riesgo que puede presentar. Me gusta caminar por la avenida Fernández de Serpa, siempre hay movimiento por este camino y además es un rápido acceso a la avenida Perimetral, y al sector Monumento, así que prácticamente ambas vías van unidas.
