Exploring the birthplace of the renowned poet Andres Eloy Blanco is an activity to which I devoted a considerable amount of time, as there are many rooms to explore and a wide variety of documents and photographs that chronicle the history of this humanist from Sucre. Upon leaving the kitchen area, we came across several images of the poet and his family—black-and-white portraits that capture the elegance characteristic of that era, when a professional photographer would search for the best angle to immortalize the moment.

The tour guide led us to the library, where there is also porcelain tableware and decorative pieces, such as soup tureens, that belonged to the Blanco-Meaño family. We were told that the books stored there are not those that belonged to Andres Eloy Blanco; the ones on display are replacements—copies on various topics meant to fill the shelves of the bookcases. I was able to confirm this when I got closer and noticed stacks of school textbooks, which do not correspond to that era.

In this area, there is also a very elegant colonial-style dining room; I imagine it was restored because the wood and leather are in impeccable condition. On the walls hang photographs of Andres Eloy Blanco alongside Romulo Gallegos, considered one of Venezuela’s greatest novelists, who went on to become president of Venezuela and, during his brief tenure at the helm of the nation, appointed Blanco as ambassador following his successful stint in the National Congress, where he stood out as the finest orator of his generation.

This grand house seems to speak to us, telling us what life was like in turbulent times. Although the Blanco-Meaño family enjoyed a high social standing—thanks to Luis Felipe Blanco, a respected physician—he was a supporter of democracy, a stance that was not well-regarded by the dictators Cipriano Castro and Juan Vicente Gomez. For this reason, he was persecuted and detained, as was Andres Eloy Blanco, who, while still a student, was imprisoned at La Rotunda and the Castillo of Puerto Cabello. Later, when Gallegos was overthrown, he was unable to return to the country because the coup caught him away on diplomatic duties in Mexico.

I love this grand house, its antique furnishings, and its old-world charm; it looks like a colonial setting where I can dream of strolling through the past, through the customs and traditions that took root in Cumana in the early 20th century.
