An adventure to San Luis Beach (Eng/Esp)

A new adventure takes us to the crystal-clear waters of San Luis Beach, the longest beach in Cumaná. This paradise is located on Avenida Universidad and stretches from the Los Bordones neighborhood to the El Águila gas station and City Hall, a distance of about two kilometers.

It’s very easy to get here by public transportation, especially since the city has expanded in this direction. San Luis offers beautiful scenery, perfect for admiring the views, relaxing, and enjoying the sun and sand. It’s a premier tourist destination, featuring restaurants, inns, and shops selling food and drinks along the entire shoreline, plus there’s a developed area nearby.

This beach is a favorite among tourists and locals alike, which is why it’s always crowded. However, keep in mind that the water can get deep right from the shore, and conditions can become unpleasant if there are strong waves or rough seas, so it’s not recommended for young children.

The atmosphere is usually pleasant; you can relax in the shade of coconut, sugarcane, and palm trees lining the entire beach. There are also huts run by various businesses that offer full service, including chairs and tables. The length of the beach offers a variety of ways to enjoy yourself, from the areas associated with the large Venetur and Los Bordones hotels to the Military Casino, the Medical Association, and the Civil Protection area—there’s something for everyone.

One of the most striking features of this beach is that there is plenty of space to walk, allowing visitors to explore several kilometers and enjoy different spots. There is a concrete walkway that runs from one end to the other, accessible on foot or by bicycle. Also noteworthy is the constant security provided by military personnel and police officers from the tourist patrol.

San Luis offers a view not found on other beaches in Sucre State: the open sea. Here, the vista extends beyond the Gulf of Paria, with partial views of Manicuare and Araya. As such, San Luis is a perfect spot for various sports and has hosted many beach festivals and other events for the enjoyment of vacationers.

Over the course of a weekend in San Luis, I was able to experience beach volleyball tournaments, triathlons, concerts, religious ceremonies, and mini-bar wars, which gives a sense of the town’s size. Since my visit was on a Friday, the only places bustling with activity were the areas where beer is sold.

It’s also interesting to observe the urban landscape; the houses look modest compared to those found in coastal areas like Marigüitar. Similarly, the damage caused by salt air to metal structures—and, of course, to the vegetation, since most of the plants here are xerophytes—is evident. I have visited San Luis on many occasions and have found it to be a suitable place for healthy recreation, ideal for watching the sunset and then returning to the daily life that surrounds the city.

Una nueva aventura nos lleva a las aguas cristalinas de playa San Luis, la más extensa de Cumaná. Este paraíso queda ubicado en la Avenida Universidad y tiene acceso desde el sector Los Bordones hasta la bomba El Águila y la Alcaldia, alrededor de unos dos kilómetros de distancia.

Es muy sencillo llegar a este lugar a través del transporte público y más porque la ciudad ha crecido hacia esta parte. San Luis tiene paisajes hermosos, dignos para admirar, relajarse y disfrutar del sol y la arena. Es un sitio turístico por excelencia, acá encontramos restaurantes, posadas y negocios que venden comida y bebidas en toda la orilla, además existe un urbanismo alrededor.

Esta playa es una de las preferidas de turistas y habitantes de la ciudad, por tal razón es muy concurrida. Sin embargo, hay que tomar en consideración que desde la orilla puede ser honda y la sensación puede llegar a ser desagradable si se presenta un fuerte oleaje o el mar se muestra iracundo, así que no es muy recomendable para niños pequeños.

Por lo regular el ambiente es agradable, nos podemos arropar debajo de la sombra de cocoteros, uveros y palmeras ubicadas a lo largo de toda la playa. También hay chozas de distintos emprendimientos que ofrecen el servicio completo, incluyendo sillas y mesa. La extensión de la playa ofrece distintas posibilidades de disfrute, desde las zonas asociadas a los grandes hoteles Venetur y Los Bordones hasta el Casino Militar, el Colegio de Médicos y el área se Protección Civil, hay espacio para todos los gustos.

Uno de los aspectos más llamativos de esta playa es que hay suficiente espacio para caminar, así se puede recorrer varios kilómetros y disfrutar de diferentes lugares. Hay una caminería de cemento por donde transitar de punta a punta ya sea a pie o en bicicleta. También es de destacar la permanente seguridad con efectivos militares y policiales de la patrulla turística.

En San Luis se presenta una imagen que no se aprecia en otras playas del estado Sucre y es el paisaje de mar abierto, acá la visión abarca más allá del Golfo de Paria, Manicuare y Araya se aprecian de manera parcial. Siendo así, San Luis es un lugar perfecto para practicar diferentes deportes, incluso ha sido sede de muchos festivales playeros y otros eventos para el disfrute de los temporadistas.

En un fin de semana he podido apreciar en San Luis competencias de voleibol de playa, triatlones, conciertos, ritos religiosos y guerras de minitecas, lo que concede una idea de la extensión del lugar. Como esta visita fue un día viernes, solamente había movimiento en los sectores donde venden cerveza.

También es interesante apreciar el urbanismo, las casas lucen modestas en comparación con las que se aprecian en zonas costeras vía Marigüitar. De igual forma, es evidente los estragos que causa el salitre en estructuras metálicas y por supuesto en la vegetación ya que la mayoría de las plantas que están acá son xerófilas. He visitado San Luis en muchas oportunidades y me ha parecido un lugar adecuado para el sano esparcimiento, ideal para contemplar el atardecer y luego retornar a la cotidianidad que envuelve a la ciudad.
