A Walk Along the Banks of the Manzanares River (Eng/Esp)

The Manzanares River is the most important freshwater tributary in Sucre State; it flows through much of Cumana, which is why we can see it from various locations. On my recent walk through Guaiquerí Park, I had the opportunity to enjoy its banks up close; this area isn’t usually very popular, as most people prefer the park’s more scenic spots.

Right now, in the face of the water supply crisis affecting the city—due to a collapse at the Turimiquire reservoir—the river has become the only solution to this emergency. Its water is being treated at water treatment plants and then delivered to residents in tanker trucks.

So once again, the Manzanares River serves as the main source of water, just as it did during the colonial era. Today we return to those origins, and for that reason it is clear that its flow has diminished significantly; it has even been dredged, so its appearance is a far cry from the images of a powerful current capable of sweeping everything in its path, especially after periods of rain.

On this walk, a curious companion witnessed my reflections—a black thrush that stayed close by the entire time. Although this bird has black plumage, the intensity of the sunlight reveals a blue sheen. They are very cunning and seize any opportunity to help themselves to a tasty treat. In the realm of myth, the appearance of this bird could signify the ability to renew oneself in the face of adversity, though at this stage of my life I’m not one to believe in fairy tales.

Returning to the Manzanares River, it must be said that it has been the subject of numerous tributes in the form of paintings, photographs, stories, anecdotes, and activities ranging from swimming to fishing at its headwaters. It is no secret that it has undergone various changes due to sedimentation caused by urban waste and sewage that flow into its waters.

It can therefore be said that the river is a heritage site of Sucre State and Cumana; its proximity to the city’s historical and tourist sites lends it even greater significance. The song “River Manzanares” by composer Jose Antonio Lopez is very famous; it highlights the Cumana landscape and emphasizes the importance of family, presenting the river as a living entity capable of understanding people’s needs.

El río Manzanares es el afluente de agua dulce más importante del estado Sucre, recorre gran parte de Cumaná y por eso podemos observarlo desde diferentes ubicaciones. En mi reciente recorrido por el parque Guaiquerí tuve la oportunidad de disfrutar de sus riberas muy de cerca, este sector no suele ser muy visitado, la mayoría de las personas prefieren áreas más vistosas del parque.

Ahora mismo, ante la crisis en el suministro de agua que afecta a la ciudad, debido a un derrumbe en el embalse del Turimiquire, el río ha pasado a ser la única solución para esta contingencia, se están tratando sus aguas en plantas potabilizadoras y luego se traslada a los ciudadanos en camiones cisternas.

Así que de nuevo el Manzanares sirve como principal fuente de suministro de agua, tal como ocurrió en la época colonial. Hoy regresamos a ese origen y por tal razón se puede advertir que su caudal ha mermado significativamente, inclusive ha sido dragado, así que su imagen está lejos de aquellas que mostraban un poderoso caudal capaz de arrastrar todo a su paso, sobre todo después de los períodos de lluvia.

En este paseo, un curioso compañero fue testigo de mis reflexiones, se trataba de un tordo negro que permaneció cerca durante todo el tiempo. Esta ave, aunque es de plumaje negro, con la intensidad de los rayos solares se nota un reflejo azul, son muy astutas y aprovechan cualquier oportunidad para servirse de algún manjar. En el ámbito mítico la aparición de esta ave podría significar la capacidad de renovarse ante las adversidades, aunque en esta etapa de mi vida no estoy para creer en cuentos.

De vuelta al río Manzanares, se debe decir que ha sido objetivo de múltiples homenajes en forma de pinturas, fotografías, relatos, anécdotas y prácticas que van desde chapuzones hasta la pesca en su cabecera. No es un secreto que ha sufrido diversos cambios por la sedimentación producto de los desechos urbanos y aguas residuales que van a parar a su torrente.

Se puede decir entonces que el río es un patrimonio del estado Sucre y de Cumaná, se encuentra cerca de sitios históricos y turísticos de la ciudad lo que le concede mayor importancia. Es muy famoso el tema musical Río Manzanares del compositor José Antonio López, allí se resalta el paisaje cumanés y se le concede importancia a la familia, presentando al río como una entidad viva que es capaz de comprender las necesidades de la gente.
