A Tour of Benigno Rodriguez Bruzual Square (Eng/Esp)

Today I’ll take you to Benigno Rodriguez Bruzual Square (1852–1925), located in the La Copita neighborhood of the city of Cumana. This site pays tribute to the composer of the Sucre State Anthem, with lyrics by Jose Silverio Gonzalez. In elementary schools, it is still often sung very early in the morning before classes begin, and it is undoubtedly one of the most moving anthems in existence.

Returning to the plaza, this site was renovated in 2023; painting work was done, and the bust of the Cumana-born musician was repaired. Since then, the walkways and the garden have looked very well-maintained. You can see some plants and large trees that provide shade for visitors. There are no places to sit here because the heavy traffic circulating around the area makes it impossible to converse in peace, so it serves only as a landmark.

This square is small and is notable for still housing the bust honoring Rodriguez Bruzual, since most of the squares in Cumaná have been vandalized to steal the metal. In this area known as La Copita, there are two roundabouts, and this square is one of them; the other is located a few meters further up, near the Republica de Argentina school.

The challenge of placing a square in such a busy roundabout—where all the buses heading toward downtown pass through—is that access isn’t easy; you have to cross the streets with great care to avoid traffic, and you must do the same to leave the square. For this reason, very few people can be seen here.

There are several squares in the area—about five—so there are options for finding a bit of shade and a cool breeze while walking through this neighborhood. In my case, I was heading from Ayacucho Street to Santa Rosa Avenue, so I took the opportunity to stop by and find out who Benigno Rodriguez Bruzual was.

Hoy los llevaré por la Plaza Benigno Rodríguez Bruzual (1852-1925), ubicada en el sector La Copita de la ciudad de Cumaná. Este sitio le rinde tributo al compositor del Himno del estado Sucre, cuya letra pertenece a José Silverio González. En las escuelas básicas aún suelen entonarlo muy temprano en las mañanas antes de iniciar las clases y sin duda es de los himnos más emotivos que existen.

Regresando a la plaza, este lugar fue remodelado en el año 2023, se realizaron labores de pintura y se reparó el busto del músico cumanés. Desde entonces las caminerías y el jardin lucen muy bien cuidados. Se pueden observar algunas plantas y grandes árboles que ofrecen sombra a los visitantes. Acá no hay espacios para sentarse debido a que la cantidad de tráfico que circula alrededor no permite conversar con tranquilidad, así que solamente constituye un punto referencial.

Esta plaza es pequeña y tiene la particularidad de conservar el busto que rinde tributo a Rodríguez Bruzual ya que la mayoría de las plazas cumanesas han sido vandalizadas para apropiarse de los metales. En este sector denominado La Copita están presentes dos redomas y justamente esta plaza es una de ellas, la otra está ubicada unos pocos metros más arriba, cerca de la escuela República de Argentina.

La particularidad de ubicar una plaza en una redoma con tanta actividad, debido que por acá transitan todos los buses que se dirigen hacia el centro de la ciudad, es que el acceso no es sencillo, se deben cruzar las calles con mucha destreza para esquivar el tráfico, lo que también hay realizar para salir de la plaza, por tal razón son muy pocas las personas que se pueden apreciar en este lugar.

Son varias las plazas presentes en el sector, alrededor de cinco, así que hay opciones para obtener un poco de sombra y brisa fresca mientras se camina por este lugar. En mi caso iba desde la calle Ayacucho hasta la avenida Santa Rosa, así que aproveché para acercarme y descubrir quien era Benigno Rodríguez Bruzual.
