A Stroll Through Romulo Gallegos Square (Eng/Esp)

Cumana is home to a variety of public spaces that serve as recreational areas for both city residents and tourists. In this regard, I recently had the opportunity to visit Rómulo Gallegos Square, named in honor of the great Venezuelan humanist, author of the novel Doña Bárbara, and one of the most influential Latin American writers of the last century.

This plaza is located on Montes Street, at the intersection with La Florida Street, and is a fairly spacious area where children can run and play while adults rest for a while in the shade of the trees. As I was walking through the square, I came across some neighbors enjoying the afternoon breeze while sitting in rocking chairs they had brought out from the entrances of their homes. Although the square has its own benches, it’s definitely not the same to sit motionless on a concrete structure.

In the center of the plaza stands a pillar that once supported a bust of Rómulo Gallegos; although the bust was vandalized, the site continues to pay tribute to the author’s literary, political, and educational legacy. The design features modern architectural lines, with reinforced concrete, artificial granite, and marble as the prominent materials. It is worth noting that the walkways are arranged in a cross shape with red bricks embedded in the floor.

In 2025, this space was remodeled; some areas were painted, benches were restored, LED lights were installed, and the overall landscaping was improved, including the beautification of the gardens where you can now see flowers such as cayenne and trinitaria. There are also lush green areas with various trees and ornamental plants that create a pleasant, refreshing atmosphere.

This plaza is also a place where you can wait for public transportation, and its rear connects to Florida Street and Punta de Mata Street, providing quick access to Cochabamba Street and the Monagas State School. Previously, about a decade ago, there was a liquor store across from this plaza, so every weekend it was very common to see a festive atmosphere lasting late into the night; however, once that business closed its doors, the plaza was revitalized and now boasts its current appearance.

En Cumaná existen diversos espacios públicos que funcionan como zonas de esparcimiento para los habitantes de la ciudad y los turistas, en tal sentido, tuve la oportunidad de recorrer recientemente la plaza Rómulo Gallegos, inaugurada en honor al gran humanista venezolano, autor de la novela Doña Bárbara, y uno de los narradores latinoamericanos más influyentes del siglo pasado.

Esta plaza se encuentra ubicada en la Calle Montes, en el cruce con calle La Florida, y es un espacio bastante amplio donde los niños pueden correr y jugar mientras los adultos descansan un rato bajo la sombra de algunos árboles, incluso cuando recorría el lugar me encontré con algunos vecinos que aprovechaban la brisa de la tarde sentados en mecedoras que trasladaron desde la entrada de sus casas, aunque la plaza tiene sus bancos, pero definitivamente no es lo mismo permanecer estático sobre una estructura de concreto.

En medio de la plaza se puede observar un pilar que sostenía el busto de Rómulo Gallegos, el cual fue vandalizado, aún así el lugar sigue rindiendo tributo a la trayectoria literaria, política y educativa de este autor. En el diseño se pueden observar modernas líneas arquitectónicas, los materiales que resaltan son concreto armado, granito artificial y mármol. Un dato que vale mencionar es que las caminerías están dispuestas en forma de cruz con ladrillos rojos incrustados en el piso.

En el año 2025 este espacio fue remodelado, se pintaron algunas zonas, restauraron bancos, colocaron luces led y se mejoró el ornato en general, incluyendo el embellecimiento de los jardines donde actualmente se pueden observar algunas flores como las cayenas y trinitarias. También se observan densas áreas verdes con diferentes árboles y plantas ornamentales que proyectan una grata sensación de frescura.

Esta plaza también es un lugar donde se puede esperar transporte público y además comunica en su parte posterior con la calle Florida y la calle Punta de Mata, así que en su parte posterior se accede rápidamente a la calle Cochabamba y la escuela estado Monagas. Anteriormente, hace una década aproximadamente, existía una licorería frente a esta plaza, así que cada fin de semana era muy común observar un ambiente festivo hasta altas horas de la noche, pero una vez que ese negocio cerró sus puertas, la plaza fue recuperada luciendo su rostro actual.
