Discovering Malapascua: Cebu’s Car-Free Tropical Dream Island

Have you ever wondered what it actually feels like to live in a postcard-perfect paradise? For a short while, I got to experience exactly that. I’m here to share my adventure on the stunning Malapascua Island in the Philippines!

To give you a little context, Malapascua is a tiny, car-free tropical dream island located in northern Cebu. It is world-famous as the only place on the planet where you can dive with thresher sharks every single day. It boasts powdery white-sand beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and incredible macro diving. And guess what? There are absolutely no cars here. You get around purely by walking or catching a ride on the back of a motorbike.

When you arrive, you’ll immediately notice travelers from all over the world soaking in the views. The island wraps you in this unique, undeniable sense of peace.

This was my very first time visiting Malapascua, and I never could have imagined how quickly I would fall in love with the place.

Our journey started early in the morning. We woke up at dawn to travel from San Remigio, Cebu, to the Maya Old Port in Daanbantayan. Luckily, we had contacted a friend living on the island, and he arranged a private pumpboat to pick us up.

As soon as the boat arrived, we packed our belongings into huge plastic bags to protect them from the crashing ocean waves. While Malapascua is a diver's haven, our mission was different and much closer to the heart: we were there to celebrate my parents' wedding anniversary.

To make a long story short, we pulled up to our friend’s house in Malapascua at exactly 11:34 AM. The best part? Their house was located right across from a local burger joint! Naturally, we were immediately tempted, and we ended up hanging out there, eating burgers, until night fell.

Once darkness settled, we headed out to explore the night market. It was so lively! Everywhere you looked, there were tourists mingling and vendors selling all kinds of things. We eventually wandered into a section filled with beautiful local sculptures and souvenirs, which was a huge highlight for me. I truly loved every moment of it.

Eventually, the late hour caught up with us. My dad called us back, reminding us that we needed to sleep and recharge our batteries for Day 2. So, with no other choice but to listen, we headed home, ending our first day in the best possible mood.
