Discovering the moon in Budapest | [EN/ES]

As a Cuban, whenever I heard about Hungary, I always wanted to visit Lake Héviz, Lake Balaton, or Hortobágy.

As a child, I remember watching some cartoons on TV that weren't very appealing, but whenever I saw documentaries showcasing its lakes, meadows, and impressive architecture, the desire to visit this country was ever-present.

This longing manifests itself in the cultural clash that every Cuban can experience when interacting with its inhabitants.

Upon entering a café or establishment that serves beer, it's common for a Cuban, before taking a sip, to want to toast their drinks with their companion. However, in Hungary, this custom is generally frowned upon. Its history, as I've discovered, dates back to 1849.

Cubans are naturally very social, unlike the inhabitants of Hungary, who tend to be more individualistic, but that doesn't prevent you from enjoying their culture and the beauty of the surroundings.

No matter which street you walk down, its cleanliness and orderly structure stand out, even the sprinklers that exist in some squares, something that a Cuban would appreciate on any of the streets of Cuba.

If you're lucky enough to find the streets leading to St. Stephen's Basilica, the reward is even greater.

One of these streets is called Zrinyi Utca, near the Danube River, and it stands out for its beauty.

Standing before such a majestic building leaves anyone breathless. Even more so for a Cuban, since places like this are rare on the island.

This Basilica is the third largest church in Hungary and the largest in Budapest. Inside, in its reliquary, lies the right hand of Stephen, the first king of Hungary.

For a Cuban, it's curious to have to pay around 8 euros to enter this type of place, since admission is usually free in Cuba, except for a few other similarly symbolic sites in Old Havana.

Every detail within it would take hours to admire. For example, the largest bell in Hungary, which is usually rung at midnight on New Year's Eve and when a prime minister dies.

Another architectural marvel that dazzles everyone is the Várkert Bazaar, a palace with gardens that evoke the most exquisite examples of European Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

The views of the river, the access it provides to other attractive squares and thermal baths, and its historical significance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to unparalleled art, make it well worth more than one visit whenever possible.

Finally, an evocation of the moon in its dance with the sun.

In the Lumiere Hall, contemplating this giant moon, seven meters in diameter, welcomes all who decide to stroll through this centrally located gallery.

Como cubano, cuando escuchaba hablar de Hungría, siempre quise visitar el Lago Héviz, el Balaton o la Hortobágy.

De pequeño recuerdo algún que otro animado que nos ponían en la televisión y no nos resultaba tan atractivos, pero cuando veía algún documental donde se apreciaban sus lagos, sus praderas, su arquitectura imponente, el anhelo por visitar este país ha estado presente.

Anhelo que se vuelca en el choque cultural que todo cubano puede comprobar al relacionarse con sus habitantes.

Al entrar en una cafetería o sitio donde expendan cerveza, es común que un cubano, antes de sorber un trago, desee brindar sus copas o vasos con quien le acompañe. Sin embargo, en Hungría esta costumbre no es bien vista por generalidad. Tiene su historia, según he descubierto, desde 1849.

El cubano por naturaleza es muy social, al contrario de los habitantes en Hungría, quienes tienden a ser más individualistas, pero eso no entorpece que se pueda disfrutar de su cultura y la belleza del entorno.

Da igual la calle por la que uno transite, su limpieza y estructura ordenada sobresalen a la vista, incluso los rociadores que existen en algunas plazas, algo que un cubano agradecería en cualquiera de las calles de Cuba.

Si por demás, uno tiene la fortuna de encontrar esas calles que llevan a la Basílica de Esteban, pues el premio es mayor.

Una de esas calles es la llamada Zrinyi Utca, cercana al río Danubio, y que resalta por su belleza.

Detenerse ante tan majestuosa edificación, deja sin aliento a cualquiera. A un cubano, mucho más pues sitios así no existen en la isla.

Esta Basílica, es la tercera iglesia más grande la Hungría y la de mayor tamaño de Budapest. Dentro, en su relicario, se encuentra la mano derecha de Esteban, primer rey de Hungría.

Para un cubano, es curioso el hecho de tener que pagar unos 8 euros por entrar a este tipo de recinto pues en Cuba normalmente es gratuita la entrada, a no ser en algún que otro lugar de simbólica referencia similar en la Habana Vieja.

Cada detalle que posee llevaría horas para contemplarle. Por ejemplo, la campana más grande de Hungría, que suele sonar en la medianoche de Nochevieja y cuando fallece algún primer ministro.

Otra de esas maravillas arquitectónicas que deslumbran a cualquiera, es el Bazar Várkert, palacio con jardines que nos evocan la más exquisita referencia del renacimiento y barroco europeo.

Las vistas al río, el acceso que brinda a otras atractivas plazas, baños termales y la historia que le ampara como Patrimonio de la Humanidad que alberga un arte sin igual, le confieren sea merecedor de más de una visita siempre que sea posible.

Finalmente, una evocación a la luna en su danza con el astro rey.

En el Lumiere Hall, contemplar esta luna gigante, de siete metros de diámetro, da la bienvenida a todo aquel que decida transitar por tan céntrica galería.
