Today we’ll explore Salvador Allende Square, which—like the health clinic located nearby—is named after the beloved doctor and former president of Chile. This public space is an island that divides Carúpano Avenue into two lanes: one leading uphill toward the La Niña bakery via El Peñón, and the other leading downhill past the La Gaviota canning plant toward Perimetral Avenue.

This plaza is a landmark in the area; locals use it to give directions to visitors so they can find their way around more easily. You can also rest here for a while, as there are some simple wooden benches. When you see a large number of people sitting here in the afternoon, it’s because they’re waiting for the bread from La Niña to come out of the oven.

On the other hand, in the morning there is some activity in the area because people gather there to wait their turn to fill up at the “Virgen del Valle Il” gas station, located just a few meters from the plaza.

When I explored the area, I noticed abundant vegetation; at that moment, the maintenance crew from the Cumaná City Hall was cleaning, pruning, and planting. I’ve realized that thanks to these workers, the plaza is always clean, although there should be more public awareness regarding the proper disposal of trash.

I lingered for a while in the shade of some palm trees—perhaps the most striking plants in the area—though the flowers are no less impressive; they beautify this space and make it very welcoming. After this time spent in nature, I regained my energy and immediately resumed my walk toward the Gruta de la Virgen del Valle.
