Strolling through the streets of the Tocuchare community (Eng/Esp)

(edited)

English version

After exploring the eastern part of Tocuchare Beach, I decided to take a shortcut through an alley that led to the community, and so I set off on a new adventure. It was my first time visiting this area, so I walked with the curiosity of a little girl at every new discovery.

The community has changed a lot, although you can still see some modest homes whose residents raise poultry such as chickens, hens, roosters, and ducks. You can also see lemon trees and plantations of bananas and plantains. Fishing is clearly the main commercial activity, and family gardens remain a tradition that’s still very much alive.

Without a doubt, Tocuchare has grown considerably; vacation homes and businesses are interspersed among the other residences. About twenty years ago, the beachfront stretched farther; now there are more buildings, showing that people prefer to live very close to the beach.

As we walked down another alley, we noticed something interesting: an underground well from which fresh water was flowing. Several children were there, drawing several liters to take home. Discovering wells is also an ancient tradition of our grandparents, who would dig into porous rock formations to extract filtered water—rainwater that had pooled underground.

In the past, drinking water was filtered through stones; it was common to see jar stands in homes, with heavy jar stones on top and a collecting vessel below. It took several hours to fill a jug because of the slow process, so people would fill the stone at night to have water in the jar by dawn.

During my exploration, I also came across several gardens with flowering plants; of course, I couldn’t miss one of the most popular ones, the Trinitaria. It’s worth noting that this community has a school that has been in operation for decades, as well as an attractive sports field that was recently reopened.
