My Walk Through Francisco of Miranda Square (Eng/Es)

(edited)

English version

I walked through Square Miranda, one of the oldest squares in Cumana, and spent quite a while examining the large sculpture of Francisco of Miranda, the work of Julio Cesar Briceño Andrade, who succeeded in conveying a sense of dynamism in the bronze, as Miranda appears determined to draw his sword. You can also see his period military uniform and the cape that distinguishes him as Generalissimo, the highest military rank granted in the country—even higher than those held by Simon Bolivar.

This statue stands on a massive pedestal that supports its large size. A plaque on the statue reads: “The first universal Venezuelan, who first raised in Venezuela the flag that gave rise to the current tricolor symbol…” Indeed, Miranda’s career as a military leader and politician was brilliant; he played a significant role in the independence of the United States and in the French Revolution, which is why his name is inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Interestingly, in the first version of Square Miranda—when the city’s market was located on the banks of the Manzanares River—a Triumphal Arch had been erected in honor of Cipriano Castro, who was the country’s president at the time. Later, the next version of the plaza was built, featuring marble floors and planters, highlighted by a fountain adorned with a child surrounded by sea creatures spouting water. Today, some of those memories remain in the collective memory. The current design is more understated, but the fountain is no longer in operation.

Among the most striking plants are the palm trees, several of which are housed in large planters. There are also small gardens on the sides, very well maintained by the city.

Today I enjoyed the atmosphere and the flow of people passing through the square. Four pharmacies, a bakery, a lottery agency, and fruit and vegetable vendors bring the place to life under a particularly blue sky and a pleasant breeze.

Thank you very much. Those trees are part of history; they are silent witnesses and still stand tall, serving as a link to the past.
