San Antonio of the Eminencia Castle is quite a large complex, so it deserves a separate post to explore the lower level, where relatively new structures have been built, the most important of which is the Cumana Museum of Contemporary Art (MACU), a cultural space established in 1998. I spoke with the staff, and they told me that it wasn’t open to visitors that day because no art exhibition had been scheduled. It’s worth mentioning that behind the museum is a meeting room where various public events are held.

I also toured this modern part of the castle; the breeze was very strong, so much so that it blew my hair around, and my white cap even flew off—luckily I was able to catch it right away, otherwise it would have been lost in the abyss, in the void that is felt in this area, which faces the Basilica of Santa Ines.

The view from here is breathtaking, as you can not only observe the city from a bird’s-eye view but also appreciate it from a more intimate perspective. Being up high is incredible, but the view from the watchtowers is also spectacular. Each of them, located at the four cardinal points, offers a unique view of Cumaná; they once served as lookout posts and have now become magnificent observation decks.

In this area, there are displays of modern art—pieces so large they cannot be exhibited in the museum itself. A blue geometric sculpture symbolizing a rhombus, and another cylindrical one resembling an anachronistic spaceship. Then there is the mast that distinguishes ships, a tribute to Sucre’s fishing industry. I also noticed three curves representing the sails of a boat and, near them, a wooden base made of rustic logs that could symbolize endurance and the passage of time. Finally, there is a brown metallic installation resembling a stylized anchor that reinforces the nautical theme.

Xerophytic vegetation is the most abundant; from the entrance to every corner of this National Historic Monument, aloe vera and cacti can be seen in the gardens. On this occasion, they looked somewhat faded, showing signs of dehydration, as Cumaná is currently experiencing a concerning drought. I also noticed trumpet flowers, which were the most striking blooms on the grounds due to the contrast of their vibrant colors against the parched appearance of the other plants.

My curious gaze also took in the beautiful lion statues embedded in the massive walls. The lion remains a prominent symbol on Spain’s coat of arms and has been used since medieval times. I found these sculptures fascinating, so I climbed up and photographed them more closely.

What I find delightful is that every time I visit this castle, I discover something appealing that I hadn’t seen before. I hope that the next time I return, I’ll be able to enter the museum area to continue exploring this heritage of Cumaná that never ceases to amaze me.

El castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia es un lugar bastante amplio, así que merece otra publicación para explorar el nivel inferior, donde se han construido estructuras relativamente nuevas, siendo la más importante el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Cumaná (MACU), un espacio dedicado a la cultura que se creó en 1998. Conversé con las personas encargadas y me indicaron que ese día no estaba abierto a los visitantes porque no se había programado ninguna exposición artística. Cabe mencionar que detrás del museo está una Sala de Reuniones donde se realizan diferentes eventos públicos.

De igual manera recorrí esta parte moderna del castillo, la brisa era muy fuerte, tanto que ondeaba mi cabello, incluso se voló mi gorro blanco, menos mal que lo pude capturar de inmediato, de lo contrario se hubiera perdido en el abismo, en el vacío que se advierte en esta zona que está orientada hacia la Basílica de Santa Inés.

La vista desde acá es asombrosa, pues no solo se puede observar la ciudad de manera objetiva sino que se aprecia desde una mirada más íntima. Estar en las alturas es increíble, pero también la perspectiva que ofrecen las garitas es espectacular. Cada una de ellas, ubicadas en los cuatro puntos cardinales, ofrece una visión única de Cumaná, antes servían como puestos de vigilancia y ahora han pasado a ser magníficos miradores.

En esta zona se han dispuesto unas muestras de arte moderno, piezas tan grandes que no pueden ser exhibidas en el museo interno. Una escultura geométrica de color azul que simboliza un rombo, otra con forma de cilindro semeja una anacrónica nave espacial. Luego está el mástil que distingue a los barcos, un homenaje a la actividad pesquera de Sucre. También observé tres curvas que representan las velas de una embarcación y cerca de ellas una base de madera de troncos rústicos que pudiera denotar la resistencia y el tiempo. Por último se encuentra una propuesta metalizada de color marrón que asemeja un ancla estilizada y refuerza la temática náutica.

La vegetación xerófila es la más abundante, desde la entrada hasta cada rincón de este Monumento Histórico Nacional se pueden apreciar sábilas y cactus en los jardines. En esta ocasión lucían un tanto descoloridas, síntomas de deshidratación, ya que en Cumaná se está atravesando por una preocupante sequía. También observé trinitarias, las cuales eran las flores más llamativas del lugar debido al contraste de su colorido con la imagen sedienta de las otras plantas.

Mi curiosa mirada también apreció hermosas estatuas de leones incrustadas en los inmensos muros. El León todavía es un símbolo que se distingue en el escudo de España y se utiliza desde la época medieval. Me parecieron fascinantes estas esculturas, por eso subí y las fotografié más de cerca.

Lo que me resulta grato es que cada vez que visito este castillo encuentro algo atractivo que no había visto previamente. Espero que la próxima ocasión que vuelva pueda ingresar a la zona del museo para seguir conociendo este patrimonio de Cumaná que no deja de sorprenderme.
