Although I’ve always found hiking to be an interesting activity, I’d never had the chance to try it, so my husband, my father, and I went to climb some rock formations on the majestic Cerro Pan de Azucar, located in Cumana.

We accessed the area via Campo Alegre Street and climbed until we reached the foothills of the mountain; it was relatively easy, as there are many houses in the area. It’s striking how urban development has reached this far, because beyond the deforestation, you can see the rocky surfaces being used as ground for building rudimentary homes, though there are also solid structures at the base of the mountain.

To climb, I used a vine; there are plenty of them in this area, so it was very easy to find one. You need it for support and also to move the ground and scare away any creatures hiding under rocks, bushes, piles of dry leaves, or dirt. Since I’m a beginner, I only attempted a moderate climb; we didn’t make it to the top, as it was too risky. The downside was that I didn’t have proper shoes, so several thorns pierced the rubber sole and reached my foot; they were very sharp, like needles, but they didn’t cause me any significant harm.

I was able to talk with several neighbors, who continue to build higher and higher up the hill. There are some pockets of pollution in the area and a nauseating smell due to the septic tanks of some houses. The hand of man is leaving its mark—and not in the best way. I learned that several homes were destroyed because when it rained, water would pool there, which was a danger.

A few seagulls were flying overhead; I enjoyed watching them as I continued on my way. All around me, drought reigned; this area looked arid, with sparse xerophytic vegetation that was very faded. The sun was relentless, and I didn’t see any reptiles along the way. The view from the top was indeed impressive; it reminded me of the vista from San Antonio de la Eminencia Castle.

The most important thing is to bring plenty of water; you must be in top physical condition to venture out on this trek. However, I recognize my limitations, so I only climbed as far as I knew I had the energy to return. I love my dad’s enthusiasm; as a nature lover, he’s determined to achieve his goals, vine in hand and wearing a dried palm hat—a true hiker.

Dad knows this hill like the back of his hand; when he was a boy, he explored every nook and cranny, even venturing as far as an area known as Las Charas, which lies on the other side. That’s why, when I invited him on this adventure, he didn’t hesitate to take the lead and show us the way.

Aunque el trekking siempre me ha parecido una actividad interesante, nunca había tenido la oportunidad de vivir la experiencia, así que junto a mi esposo y mi padre nos fuimos a escalar unas formaciones rocosas que se encuentran en el majestuoso Cerro Pan de Azúcar, ubicado en Cumaná.

Accedimos por la calle Campo Alegre y subimos hasta llegar a las faldas del cerro, fue relativamente fácil, hay muchas casas por allí. Es impresionante cómo el urbanismo ha llegado hasta acá porque más allá de la deforestación, se aprecian las superficies de las rocas como el suelo para levantar viviendas rudimentarias, aunque también existen construcciones sólidas en la base de la montaña.

Para escalar utilicé un bejuco, en esta zona hay bastantes, así que fue muy fácil hallar uno. Es necesario para apoyarse y también para mover la superficie y espantar alimañas que se escondan bajo piedras, arbustos, promontorios de hojas secas o tierra. Como soy novata solamente me aventuré con un ascenso mediano, no llegamos a la cima, pues era muy arriesgado. Lo negativo es que no tenía zapatos adecuados, así que varias espinas se clavaron en la suela de caucho y llegaron hasta mi pie, eran muy filosas, como agujas, pero no me causaron ningún daño de consideración.

Pude conversar con varios vecinos, quienes continúan construyendo cada vez más arriba del cerro, en el lugar se notan algunos focos de contaminación y un olor nauseabundo debido a los pozos sépticos de algunas casas. La mano del hombre dejando huella y no de la mejor manera. Me enteré que varias viviendas fueron destruidas porque al llover represaban el agua, lo que era un peligro.

En lo alto volaban algunas gaviotas, me agradó contemplarlas mientras avanzaba en mi recorrido, a mi alrededor reinaba la sequía, esta zona lucía árida, con regular vegetación xerófila, muy descolorida. El sol estaba inclemente, no se observaron animales rastreros en el trayecto. La vista desde lo alto sí era impresionante, me recordó a la perspectiva que se tiene desde el Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia.

Lo más importante es llevar hidratación, las condiciones físicas deben estar óptimas para aventurarse al trekking, sin embargo, reconozco mis limitaciones así que solo escalé hasta donde estuve consciente que tenía energía para regresar. Me encanta el entusiasmo de mi papá, como amante de la naturaleza, va determinado a lograr sus objetivos, bejuco en mano y sombrero de palma seca, todo un excursionista.

Papá se conoce este cerro de punta a punta, cuando era muchacho recorrió cada recodo, inclusive llegó hasta un sector conocido como Las Charas, que queda al otro lado, por tal razón, cuando lo invité a esta aventura no dudó en ponerse al frente para señalar el camino.
