Gualberto Ibarreto Boulevard: Celebrating Eastern Folklore (Eng/Esp)

Today I took a magical stroll because it was full of colors and music. The design of this space, featuring a huge cuatro and a cogollo hat, welcomes us to Gualberto Ibarreto Boulevard. The musical instrument looks impressive, and the sculpture honoring the folk artist—a smiling figure sitting in a hammock with a cuatro in hand—reminds me of the song “Maria Antonia,” which my grandmother used to sing while sweeping the house.

This large statue of Ibarreto stands on a three-tiered base; on one side, you can see the coat of arms of Sucre State, and on the back, you can make out the geographical outline that appears on maps.

Every corner of this plaza resonates with sweet melodies and is a delight to the eye. In fact, you can see various musical note motifs on the railings surrounding the statue. The yellow, blue, and red of the national flag are visible everywhere, but without overwhelming the space with tricolor mosaics.

This eye-catching boulevard is located at the entrance to the The Peñon neighborhood in the city of Cumana. From the moment I walked through the area, I was amazed; every detail is eye-catching, and your gaze wanders from one spot to another, capturing enchanting images. From well-maintained gardens to unique concrete benches shaped like asterisks, every element is designed to blend harmoniously with the overall aesthetic.

Gualberto Ibarreto’s images pay tribute to a popular singer whose artistic career has been dedicated to highlighting the values of local folklore and that of the eastern region, focusing on genres such as the jota, the galeron, and the polo margariteño, although he was also very famous during his time as a ballad singer with hits like “The Sparrow” and “Thief of Your Love”

I loved walking along the pathways; they resemble a mosaic of vibrant colors leading up to the giant eastern-style hat, which also serves as a stage for various performances. Here you can see a light show, and a little further on, there are stairs leading up to a viewing platform. I took the opportunity to snap a few photos from there—the view is truly amazing, though not for those who suffer from vertigo.

Because it is located on an island, this boulevard is surrounded by a lot of activity; traffic is constant because on one side is the entrance to the Villa Cristobal Colon residential complex and on the other is the entrance to the The Peñon tourist area, while directly across is Carupano Avenue, which is the only route for traveling from the municipality of Sucre to the municipalities of Bolivar, Mejia, and Bermudez.

Hoy di un recorrido mágico porque estuvo lleno de colores y música. El diseño de este espacio, con un cuatro enorme y un sombrero de cogollo, nos dan la bienvenida al bulevar Gualberto Ibarreto. El instrumento musical luce imponente y la escultura que rinde homenaje al artista popular, figura sonriente sentada en una hamaca con cuatro en mano, me hace recordar la canción "María Antonia", que solía cantar mi abuela mientras barría la casa.

Esta gran estatua de Ibarreto se encuentra instalada sobre una base de tres niveles, de un lado se puede observar el escudo del estado Sucre y en la parte de atrás se puede distinguir la forma geografica que aparece en los mapas.

Cada rincón de esta plaza vibra en melodías dulces y agradables a la vista. De hecho se pueden observar diferentes figuras de notas musicales en las barandas que resguardan la estatua. El amarillo, el azul y el rojo de la bandera nacional se aprecian por todas partes, pero sin caer en la saturación de mosaicos tricolores.

Este vistoso bulevar se encuentra en la entrada de la comunidad El Peñón de la ciudad de Cumaná. Desde que caminé por sus instalaciones quedé sorprendida, cada detalle es llamativo y la mirada pasa de un sitio a otro para capturar imágenes encantadores. Desde jardines bien cuidados hasta bancos de cemento originales ya que poseen forma de asteriscos, así que cada elemento está pensando para integrarse de forma armoniosa a la principal propuesta estética.

Las imágenes de Gualberto Ibarreto rinden tributo a un cantante popular cuya vida artística ha transcurrido resaltando los valores del folclore local y de la región oriental, enfocándose en géneros como la jota, el galerón y el polo margariteño, aunque también fue muy famosa su época de baladista con éxitos como El Gorrión y Ladrón de tu amor.

Me encantó transitar por las caminerías, semejan un rompecabezas de tonos vibrantes hasta llegar a la figura del sombrero oriental gigante, que también funciona como una tarima para realizar diferentes presentaciones. Acá se puede notar un juego de luces y un poco más adelante se observan unas escaleras para subir a una tribuna. Aproveché la ocasión para tomar unas fotos desde allí y la vista es realmente genial, no apta para personas que sufren de vértigo.

Al estar ubicado en una isla, este bulevar presenta mucho dinamismo a su alrededor, el tráfico es incesante porque a un lado está la entrada a la urbanización Villa Cristóbal Colón y por el otro la entrada al sector turístico El Peñón, en tanto de frente está la avenida Carúpano, la cual es paso obligado para trasladarse del municipio Sucre a los municipios Bolívar, Mejía y Bermúdez.
