La Marina Street has much more to show me, so I continued my exploration. There’s a very friendly community here that identifies with the seascape. Since it’s part of their daily lives, they don’t stop to gaze at it the way someone who has to travel from one place to another does to admire and marvel at the blue spectacle. Here, they tend to view the sea as an important natural resource for the regional economy.

I walked down the street for quite a while, observing local life, with everyone busy with their own tasks to make the most of the morning. Several people work at the shipyard, while others are fishermen. As for me, I stop to take in this beautiful scenery—the sea, so welcoming and mysterious at the same time. I’ve always been fascinated by its power and majesty, as I’ve said time and again.

As an anecdote, I’ll tell you that for much of this adventure I was accompanied by a rooster—a beautiful bird that roamed freely through the alleys. In these parts, the custom of waking up to its crowing is still alive, and in Cumaná it’s very common to raise and train fighting roosters, such as this one that crossed my path, known as a “gallo pinto.”

As I left my feathered companion behind, I gazed out at the sea through another alleyway while reflecting on human nature and appearances. There was the sea, looking beautiful to me—that’s what my eyes perceived from afar. However, when I looked more closely, I noticed that the area is polluted by the amount of trash piled up around it, in addition to the wastewater discharged from the shipyard—a contrast that left me bewildered.
