To get to the Sanctuary, I started my tourist route in Alcabideche, Sintra. I recommend starting here because, apparently, from this town you can visit the Chapel of the Holy Family of Alcabideche, which was recently restored last year and is very beautiful. It was built in 1954 commissioned by João de Sousa Araújo, who was a well-known artist in his time because he was not only an architect but also a professional ceramic painter, a very popular art form in the country.
If you wish to buy some supplies for your hike to the sanctuary, there is a café in the park of this small town where you can buy drinks or food, which you will definitely need on this hike. It's about 8 km, so you'll definitely need plenty of water and some snacks to help your body overcome this challenge.

After hiking this great ridge and passing through several villages, your body will be quite tired, but it will be worth it because along the way you'll be able to see unique views of the sea, the city, and even, when there isn't too much fog, my brother says you can see the Balearic Islands of Portugal. Unfortunately, I wasn't so lucky, but you can appreciate the Cascais-Sintra reserve in a completely different way, creating memories that will stay with you. So, if you were looking for a physical challenge, unforgettable views, and contact with nature, I wholeheartedly recommend that you visit this place.
But, my friend, this hike isn't just about the positive things I mentioned; now let's talk a little about the history of this sanctuary, located at almost 500 meters above sea level. This sanctuary was built in honor of the Chapel of Our Lady of Penha. Due to an urban legend, it is said that the Virgin Mary appeared to a very poor, mute shepherdess and offered her food, performing a small miracle by allowing her to call her mother to receive the food she had been offered. This story spread throughout the town, transforming that spot on the mountain into a religious area where people came to pray and connect with their faith. The sanctuary was built in 1918 by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro. That name may be familiar because at that time he owned the famous Quinta Regadeira, another very popular tourist attraction in Sintra.
