Caminata por La Valeria: otro destino, otro aprendizaje

Esta caminata comienza en Caldas, Antioquia, un municipio que se encuentra a unos dieciocho kilómetros de Medellín, aproximadamente cuarenta minutos en carro. El punto de partida es el parque de La Locería, un lugar sencillo pero perfecto para iniciar el camino y disponerse a caminar con calma y mente abierta.

Desde allí tomamos la ruta que va hacia la planta, avanzando poco a poco hasta llegar a La Valeria. Este primer tramo, de unos cuatro a cinco kilómetros, sirve para entrar en ritmo, observar el paisaje y dejar que el cuerpo y la respiración se adapten al paso. Al acercarnos al final de La Valeria, donde están el puente y algunos negocios, esta vez no seguimos el camino de siempre. Normalmente se sube hacia la izquierda, pero en esta ocasión decidimos ir hacia la derecha, tomando un sendero distinto, uno de esos caminos que no aparecen en los planes, pero que guardan sorpresas.

Seguimos caminando recto hasta que aparece un portón rojo. Justo allí, hacia la izquierda, se levanta una montaña. Por ese punto comienza la subida, siguiendo un camino ancestral que se deja ver con claridad y que no tiene pérdida. A medida que avanzamos, el entorno cambia por completo y entramos en un bosque de pinos profundo y silencioso, un lugar que parece detenido en el tiempo, tan hermoso que deja sin palabras. Es uno de esos espacios que se sienten más de lo que se describen, un verdadero paraíso escondido.

El sendero continúa hasta que, casi sin notarlo, salimos a una vía principal conocida como el Camino de la Culebra. En este tramo es fundamental ir preparado, con comida, buena hidratación, ropa adecuada y zapatos para senderismo, porque por aquí no hay dónde comprar nada y el camino exige presencia y cuidado. Seguimos avanzando hasta llegar a la carretera principal que conduce a Angelópolis. Al encontrarla, tomamos a mano izquierda, descendiendo nuevamente en dirección a Caldas.

Desde allí el recorrido continúa por la vía principal, atravesando varios sectores, hasta que finalmente regresamos al parque de La Locería, cerrando el circuito y completando la caminata. En total, el recorrido puede tomar entre cinco y seis horas, dependiendo del ritmo, las pausas y el tiempo que cada uno se regale para contemplar el entorno.

Puede parecer un recorrido difícil de explicar, pero una vez que estás en él, todo fluye con naturalidad. Más allá del camino físico, esta caminata deja un aprendizaje profundo: seguir caminando, no quedarnos en la comodidad de la cama, atrevernos a avanzar incluso cuando aparecen los miedos. Salir a caminar y hacer senderismo es una forma de reencontrarnos con nosotros mismos, de fortalecernos por dentro y de recordar que siempre hay nuevos destinos esperando a quienes se atreven a dar el primer paso.

This hike begins in Caldas, Antioquia, a municipality located about eighteen kilometers from Medellín, roughly a forty-minute drive away. The starting point is La Locería Park, a simple place but perfect for beginning the journey and setting out to walk calmly, with an open mind.

From there, we take the route that leads toward the plant, moving forward little by little until we reach La Valeria. This first stretch, about four to five kilometers long, helps us get into rhythm, observe the landscape, and allow the body and breathing to adapt to the pace. As we approach the end of La Valeria, where the bridge and a few small businesses are located, this time we do not follow the usual path. Normally, the trail goes uphill to the left, but on this occasion we decide to go to the right, taking a different route—one of those paths that are not planned, yet hold unexpected surprises.

We continue walking straight until a red gate appears. Right there, to the left, a mountain rises. From that point, the ascent begins, following an ancestral path that is clearly visible and easy to follow. As we move forward, the surroundings change completely and we enter a deep, silent pine forest—a place that feels frozen in time, so beautiful it leaves you speechless. It is one of those spaces that are felt more than described, a true hidden paradise.

The trail continues until, almost without noticing it, we come out onto a main road known as the Camino de la Culebra. On this stretch, it is essential to be well prepared, with food, good hydration, appropriate clothing, and proper hiking shoes, because there is nowhere to buy anything here and the path demands full attention and care. We keep moving forward until we reach the main road that leads to Angelópolis. Once there, we turn left, descending again in the direction of Caldas.

From there, the route continues along the main road, passing through several areas, until we finally return to La Locería Park, closing the loop and completing the hike. In total, the journey can take between five and six hours, depending on pace, breaks, and the time each person allows themselves to contemplate the surroundings.

It may seem like a difficult route to explain, but once you are on it, everything flows naturally. Beyond the physical path, this hike leaves a deep lesson: to keep walking, not to stay in the comfort of bed, and to dare to move forward even when fears arise. Going out to walk and hike is a way to reconnect with ourselves, to strengthen ourselves from within, and to remember that there are always new destinations waiting for those who dare to take the first step.
