Visit Spain - Plaza de la Reina, Valencia

Another stop on our Spain trip took us straight into the heart of old Valencia, to Plaza de la Reina and the streets around the Cathedral. This is the kind of square that shows up in almost every postcard of the city, and once you are actually standing in it, it is easy to understand why. We got there in the late afternoon planning to just pass through on the way to dinner, and ended up staying for hours, watching the square change from a soft grey afternoon into a golden sunset and finally into a quiet, lit up night scene. It sits right at the edge of the Barrio del Carmen, the oldest and most tangled part of the city, so it also works perfectly as a starting point for getting a little lost in the surrounding lanes afterward.

Mais uma paragem da nossa viagem por Espanha levou-nos direto ao coração da Valência antiga, à Plaza de la Reina e às ruas em torno da Catedral. É o tipo de praça que aparece em quase todos os postais da cidade, e assim que ali estamos é fácil perceber porquê. Chegámos ao final da tarde só de passagem, a caminho do jantar, e acabámos por ficar horas, a ver a praça mudar de uma tarde cinzenta para um pôr do sol dourado e, por fim, para uma noite tranquila e iluminada. Fica mesmo na fronteira do Barrio del Carmen, a zona mais antiga e labiríntica da cidade, funcionando também como ótimo ponto de partida para nos perdermos um pouco pelas ruas à volta.

Our first proper view of the square came with the Micalet bell tower rising next to the Cathedral, its octagonal shape unmistakable against the sky. Construction started in 1381 under the cathedral master Andreu Julià and finished around 1429, and it was originally a free standing tower before being joined to the Cathedral later on. Under that grey sky, kids ran after giant soap bubbles floating over the stones while people relaxed at the cafe terraces nearby.

A nossa primeira vista a sério da praça foi a torre sineira do Micalet, a erguer se junto à Catedral, com a sua forma octogonal inconfundível contra o céu. A construção começou em 1381, sob o mestre da catedral Andreu Julià, e terminou por volta de 1429, tendo sido originalmente uma torre isolada antes de ser ligada à Catedral mais tarde. Debaixo daquele céu cinzento, as crianças corriam atrás de enormes bolas de sabão que flutuavam sobre as pedras, enquanto as pessoas relaxavam nas esplanadas por perto.

A short walk brought us to the neighboring Plaza de la Virgen, where the sunset light hit the Palau de la Generalitat and the buildings around it. This square sits on the site of the old Roman forum, the original civic heart of the city almost two thousand years ago, and the Generalitat itself has been the seat of the regional government since the fifteenth century. On the opposite side sits the Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados, dedicated to the patron saint of Valencia. The whole place had that warm end of day glow that makes old stone look golden.

Uma pequena caminhada levou nos até à vizinha Plaza de la Virgen, onde a luz do pôr do sol batia no Palau de la Generalitat e nos edifícios à sua volta. Esta praça fica no local do antigo fórum romano, o coração cívico original da cidade há quase dois mil anos, e o próprio Generalitat é sede do governo regional desde o século XV. No lado oposto fica a Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados, dedicada à padroeira de Valência. Todo o espaço tinha aquele brilho quente de final de tarde que faz a pedra antiga parecer dourada.

We paused under one of the old wrought iron street lamps, with more historic buildings stretching out behind us as the evening crowd started to gather. This square is also home to the Tribunal de las Aguas, the Water Tribunal, which still meets in front of the Cathedral every Thursday to settle disputes over irrigation, a tradition considered one of the oldest of its kind in Europe.

Parámos debaixo de um dos antigos candeeiros de ferro forjado, com mais edifícios históricos a estenderem se atrás de nós enquanto a multidão da noite começava a juntar se. Esta praça também acolhe o Tribunal de las Aguas, o Tribunal das Águas, que ainda hoje se reúne em frente à Catedral todas as quintas feiras para resolver disputas sobre a irrigação, uma tradição considerada uma das mais antigas do género na Europa.

Looking back toward the Generalitat tower, its three flags stood out clearly against the dimming sky. What struck me most is how the building feels both monumental and completely normal at the same time, with people walking their dogs right at its feet, as if a five hundred year old seat of government were just another part of the neighborhood.

Olhando de novo para a torre do Generalitat, as suas três bandeiras destacavam se claramente contra o céu a escurecer. O que mais me impressionou foi como o edifício parece monumental e ao mesmo tempo completamente normal, com pessoas a passear os cães mesmo aos seus pés, como se uma sede de governo com quinhentos anos fosse só mais uma parte do bairro.

From right underneath, the Micalet tower and the Cathedral's ornate facade looked even more impressive. The Cathedral itself mixes Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque styles built up over centuries, sitting on a spot that held a Roman temple and later a mosque before becoming the Christian cathedral we see today. Its museum even claims to hold, in a side chapel, an agate chalice identified by some scholars as the Holy Grail, one of those local legends that makes wandering these old stones a little more fun, even if I cannot vouch for how solid the claim really is.

Vistos mesmo por baixo, a torre do Micalet e a fachada ornamentada da Catedral pareciam ainda mais impressionantes. A própria Catedral mistura estilos gótico, românico e barroco construídos ao longo de séculos, erguendo se num local que já foi templo romano e depois mesquita, antes de se tornar na catedral cristã que vemos hoje. O seu museu afirma até guardar, numa capela lateral, um cálice de ágata identificado por alguns estudiosos como o Santo Graal, uma daquelas lendas locais que tornam passear por estas pedras antigas um pouco mais divertido, ainda que eu não possa garantir o quão sólida é essa afirmação.

Back at Plaza de la Reina, the bubble seller was still going strong, weaving between families while the tower and Cathedral kept watch in the background. The square is officially dedicated to Queen Maria de las Mercedes, first wife of King Alfonso XII, and only took its current shape between the late nineteenth century and 1970, recent by Valencia's standards.

De volta à Plaza de la Reina, o vendedor de bolas de sabão continuava em grande, a passear entre as famílias enquanto a torre e a Catedral vigiavam ao fundo. A praça é oficialmente dedicada à Rainha Maria das Mercês, primeira esposa do Rei Afonso XII, e só ganhou a forma atual entre o final do século XIX e 1970, algo recente para os padrões de Valência.

By the time we wrapped up, night had properly fallen. Walking back down the narrow street, past the little bookshop with its glowing sign, the Cathedral and the Micalet tower appeared lit up in the distance, with the fountain glowing softly and the street finally quiet after a long day of visitors.

Quando terminámos, a noite já tinha caído por completo. A caminho de volta pela rua estreita, junto à pequena livraria com o seu letreiro iluminado, a Catedral e a torre do Micalet surgiam iluminadas ao longe, com a fonte a brilhar suavemente e a rua finalmente calma depois de um longo dia de visitantes.

Plaza de la Reina and Plaza de la Virgen together make up one of those corners of a city where you can just sit down, watch people go by and let centuries of history do the talking. Between the tower with its 207 step staircase, the Cathedral with its mix of styles and whispered Holy Grail legend, the Generalitat quietly running the region from behind a Gothic facade, and the Water Tribunal still settling disputes the same way it has for a thousand years, there is a surprising amount packed into what looks, at first glance, like just another pretty square. Add a bubble seller, a few playing children and a golden Mediterranean sunset, and it turns into exactly the kind of stop that makes a city trip memorable. We could easily have stayed there for hours, and next time we probably will.

A Plaza de la Reina e a Plaza de la Virgen formam, juntas, um daqueles cantos de cidade onde basta sentarmo nos, ver as pessoas a passar e deixar séculos de história falarem por si. Entre a torre com a sua escadaria de 207 degraus, a Catedral com a sua mistura de estilos e a lenda sussurrada do Santo Graal, o Generalitat a gerir a região em silêncio por trás de uma fachada gótica, e o Tribunal das Águas que continua a resolver disputas da mesma forma há mil anos, há uma quantidade surpreendente de coisas concentradas naquilo que, à primeira vista, parece apenas mais uma praça bonita. Junte se um vendedor de bolas de sabão, algumas crianças a brincar e um pôr do sol dourado no Mediterrâneo, e o resultado é exatamente o tipo de paragem que torna uma viagem inesquecível. Podíamos ter ficado ali horas, e da próxima vez provavelmente vamos ficar.
