We often don’t know where waterfalls come from; like a secret pool hidden by the mountains and hills, they are ready to meet the earth when the time comes. That clear water, breaking free from the heights, flows onward, touching the grass, stones, and moss along the way. Then, reaching a high cliff, it plunges downward. It is at that moment that we witness the most beautiful part of the scenery. Just like the view I saw at the natural wonder of Toparlar Waterfall, located between Köyceğiz and Akyaka...

Şelalelerin nereden geldiğini çoğu zaman bilmeyiz; sanki dağların ve tepelerin sakladığı gizli bir havuz gibi, zamanı geldiğinde yeryüzüyle buluşmaya hazırdır. Yükseklerden kopup gelen o berrak su, yol boyunca otlara, taşlara ve yosunlara dokunarak ilerliyor. Sonra yüksek bir kayalığa gelerek kendini aşağıya bırakıyor. While I was on vacation in the Aegean region, I really wanted to see the waterfall located in the Toparlar neighborhood, which is part of the Köyceğiz district in Muğla province. To see the waterfall, which is about 5 km from the Köyceğiz district, I set out from the hotel where I was staying in Ölüdeniz. To get to the waterfall, I drove from Ölüdeniz along the Fethiye-Muğla road, turned off at the sign for Toparlar Waterfall, and drove about 5 km on a dirt road until I reached a certain point. After that, we reached Toparlar Waterfall following a 10- to 15-minute walk.

Ege'de tatil yaptığım sıralarda Muğla ilimizin Köyceğiz ilçesine bağlı olan ve Toparlar Mahallesinde bulunan şelaleyi yakından görmeyi çok istemiştim. Köyceğiz ilçesine yaklaşık 5 km uzaklıkta olan şelaleyi görmek için Ölüdeniz'de kaldığım otelden yola çıktım. Şelaleye gitmek için Ölüdeniz'den Fethiye Muğla yolundan ilerleyerek Toparlar Şelalesi yazan tabeledan saparak yaklaşık 5 km topraklı yoldan aracımla belirli bir noktaya kadar geldim. Sonrasında 10 15 dakikalık bir yürüyüşten sonra Toparlar Şelalesine ulaştık.

The waterfall flows along a stream through a wide forest, winding its way between large and small rocks that have taken on a black hue. We walked along a narrow dirt path at the edge of the stream, and at times along rocky paths where the stream flows, heading straight toward the waterfall. As we walked along the path, small waterfalls had formed in some sections of the stream. In fact, the water had created depths so great we couldn’t see the bottom. People probably swim here in the summer. The waterfall flows at its strongest during March, April, and May. During these months, the rushing water has carved out the rocks, forming small pools. We specifically added this spot to our travel itineraries during these months. Because most waterfalls and streams flow very rapidly during these months due to the combination of melting snow and rainwater. This phenomenon can be observed both along the Mediterranean coast and the Aegean coast.

Derenin kenarından dar topraklı yoldan ve zaman zaman da akan derenin bulunduğu taşlı yollardan geçerek şelalenin tam aktığı yöne doğru yürüdük. Yolda yürürken derenin bazı bölümlerinde küçük küçük şelaleler oluşmuş. Hatta suyun dibini göremediğimiz derinlikler oluşturmuş. Muhtemelen yazın buralarda suya giriyorlar. Mart Nisan ve Mayıs aylarında şelale en güçlü haliyle akıyor. Bu aylarda şiddetli akan sular kayaları da oyarak küçük küçük havuzlar oluşturmuş. Biz özellikle bu aylarda burayı gezi rotalarımıza ekledik. Çünkü çoğu şelale ve dereler karların erimesiyle ve yağmur sularının birleşimiyle bu aylarda çok hızlı akarkar. Bu durum hem Akdeniz kıyılarında hem de Ege kıyılarında görülebiliyor.

We walked along the water’s edge—and sometimes even in the water—toward the point where the waterfall originated. The water looked quite clear and shallow. The fact that the stones were clearly visible and looked so vibrant also showed just how clean the water was. The current wasn’t very strong, but in some sections, the water falling from a height increased its speed. Amid the sounds of birds and insects, we continued on our way, feeling both the coolness of the water and its soothing calm. Occasionally, we sat on a rock along the edge and focused solely on the sound of the water. Most of the rocks around us had been shaped by the water. They had all taken on different forms and were scattered about.

Suyun kenarından ve bazen de içinde yürüyerek şelalenin geldiği noktaya doğru yürüdük. Su oldukça berrak ve sığ görünüyordu. Taşların net bir şekilde seçilebilmesi ve canlı duruşu suyun ne kadar temiz olduğunu da gösteriyordu. Akış hızı çok güçlü değil ama, bazı bölümlerde yüksekten düşen sular hızını da artırıyordu. Kuş seslerinin ve böcek seslerinin içinde suyun hem serinliğini hem de huzur veren sakinliği hissederek yolumuza devam ettik. Arada kenarda bir taşın üzerinde oturarak sadece suyun sesine odaklandık. Etrafımızdaki çoğu taşlar sudan nasibini almışlar. Hepsi farklı şekillere bürünerek etrafa yayılmışlar.

The grasses, plants, and trees growing along the water’s edge on both sides look so colorful and vibrant that they highlight the water’s clarity and purity. As we walk through the narrow path of uneven ground and rocks along the edge, we sometimes find it difficult. Some of the stones are wet and slippery, so we need to be careful. The yellow and green grasses along the water’s edge are spread out widely. Dense stands of pine trees can be seen on the hills and mountains near the water. In the open areas left behind by the water, there are also broad-leaved trees that provide more shade. This demonstrates just how dense the vegetation around the water is.

Suyun kenarında sağında ve solunda yetişen otlar, bitkiler ve ağaçlar o kadar renkli ve canlı görünüyor ki; suyun tüm berraklığını ve temizliğini gözler önüne seriyor. Kenardan inişli çıkışlı oluşan dar toprağın ve taşlarının arasından yürürken zaman zaman da zorlanıyoruz. Bazı taşların yüzü ıslak ve kaygan dikkatli olmak gerekiyor. Suyun kenarındaki sarı ve yeşil otlar etraflıca dağılmışlar. Suyun yakınındaki tepelerde ve dağlarda yoğun çam ağaçları görülüyor. Suyun geride bıraktığı boş alanlarda geniş yapraklı daha gölge veren ağaçlarda var. Bu da suyun etrafındaki bitki örtüsünün ne kadar yoğun olduğunu gösteriyor.

I especially want to highlight the spots where the water flows with great force. In these areas, the shape and size of the rocks, along with the spaces they create, form a natural, unadorned beauty. We can see the clarity and purity of the water both on its surface and in the sparkle it leaves on the rocks and plants it strikes. Just watching the frothy spectacle created as the water flows is a great pleasure. The color of the stones varies depending on how the water strikes them. The tones and shapes of the stones, which resemble brown and black hues, also change depending on their location.

Suyun coşarak aktığı noktaları özellikle göstermek istiyorum. Bu alanlarda taşların şekli, büyüklüğü ve oluşturduğu boşluklar doğal sade bir güzellik oluşturmuş. Suyun berraklığını ve temizliğini hem suyun yüzünden hemde çarptıkları taşlara ve otlara bıraklığı parlaklıktan anlayabiliyoruz. Aktıkça oluşan köpüklü şölenleri izlemek bile insana büyük bir keyif veriyor. Taşların rengi suyun çarpmasına göre farklılık gösteriyor. Kahverengi ve siyah renklere benzeyen taşların tonları ve şekilleri de bulundukları yere göre değişiyor.

We had arrived at that wide area where the waterfall flowed abundantly. Around the water, which flowed in a manner reminiscent of a long, overhanging bridge, there were mosses, aquatic plants, and rocks covered in moss. As the water flowed under the sun’s shining face, taking on a clear and clean appearance, the surrounding rocks and plants looked vibrant and colorful. In this area, the waterfall cascades down a powerful ledge into its pools. The water arriving here flows over a natural rock formation, cascading like a fine veil to form small pools. The water, striking the rocks, flows onward in a mist of foam. It seems that natural beauties have emerged as a result of the water eroding the rock.

Şelalenin bol bol aktığı o geniş alana gelmiştik. Uzun taşan bir köprüyü anımsatan bir şekilde akan suyun etrafında yosun ve sucul bitkilerle beslenen otlar ve taşlar yosunlar bulunuyordu. Güneşin parlayan yüzünde akan su berrak ve temiz bir şekle bürünürken etrafındaki taşlar ve otlar canlı ve renkli görünüyordu. Bu alanda şelale güçlü bir set üzerinden dökülerek havuzlarına ulaşıyor. Buraya gelen su doğal bir kayalık üzerine gelerek ince bir tül perde şeklinde akarak küçük küçük havuzlar oluşturuyor. Kayalara çarpan sular köpükler halinde süzülerek ilerliyor. Suyun kayayı aşındırmasıyla ortaya doğal güzellikler çıkmış görünüyor.

After cleansing our souls with the sound of flowing water at the end of the day, we turned back to leave the waterfall. You know how we always say that some places can only be truly understood by experiencing them firsthand? Well, Toparlar Waterfall had become just such a place for us—a place we experienced and where our souls were cleansed.

Günün sonunda akan suyun sesiyle ruhumuzu temizledikten sonra, şelaleden ayrılmak için geri döndük. Hani hepimiz söyleriz ya, bazı yerler yaşanarak anlatılır. İşte toparlar şelalesi de bizim için yaşayıp, ruhumuzu temizlediğimiz bir yer olmuştu.
