By the way, let me just mention this: the formation of those light green and gray hues comes from the thin layer of moss on the rocks and the reflections of sunlight. This is Kurudere Waterfall, located in Esenler Village in Bartın—one of the places we used to run away from home to cool off in the summer when we were kids.

I spent a week visiting family and relatives in my hometown of Bartın during the holiday. Bartın is one of the most beautiful cities in the Western Black Sea region. The dense, leafy trees you see around the water are a result of the Black Sea climate. This waterfall is located in Esenler Village, which is part of the Amasra district of Bartın. It is approximately a 45-minute drive from Bartın. You can reach this village either by car or by minibus, which departs every two hours.

Bayram tatilini geçirdiğim memleketim Bartın'da bir hafta aile ve akraba ziyaretlerinde bulundum. Bartın, Batı Karadeniz'in en güzel şehirleri arasında yer alıyor. Suyun etrafında gördüğünüz yoğun yapraklı ağaçlar, Karadeniz ikliminin bir sonucudur. Bu şelale, Bartın'ın Amasra ilçesine bağlı olan Esenler Köyündedir. Bartın'a olan uzaklığı ise, yaklaşık 45 dakikadır. Bu köye ister kendi aracınızla isterseniz iki saat arayla kalkan dolmuşlarla da gelebilirsiniz.

The waterfall here is one of those hidden waterfalls with natural pools and rocky steps, known mostly to the locals. In the village, this and many similar streams, rivers, and waterfalls are known only by the names given to them by the villagers. Kurudere, fed by a spring originating from the village’s high mountains, flows through slightly moss-covered rocks and cascades approximately 50 meters into a pool surrounded by lush greenery—a natural spring worth discovering for its beauty.

Buradaki şelale, daha çok yerel halkın bildiği, doğal havuzlu ve kayalık basamaklı saklı şelalelerden biridir. Köyde bu ve buna benzer birçok dere, akarsu ve şelaleler yalnızca köy halkı tarafından söylenen isimlerle biliniyor. Kurudere, köyün yüksek dağlarından oluşturduğu kaynakla hafif yosunlu kayalar arasından süzülerek yaklaşık 50 metre yükseklikten yemyeşil doğayla havuza dökülen doğal kaynak suyu olarak keşfedilmeye değer bir güzellik olarak duruyor.

In the lands where I live, village life was intertwined with nature. In the summer months, we would meet up with the village children and play along the stream banks. When we got sweaty, we’d jump into the water. Our elders, meanwhile, worked in the vineyards and orchards and tended to the fields. They would tackle the seasonal tasks together through collective effort. Imece is a tradition in villages and small towns where local people come together to voluntarily collaborate on tasks that cannot be done alone. In the past, this sense of solidarity was one of the most valuable traditions of village life. Most houses are made of wood and are generally two-story. Every garden has a small wooden barn.

Yaşadığım bu topraklarda köy yaşamı doğayla iç içe geçerdi. Yaz aylarında köyün çocuklarıyla buluşup, dere kenarlarında oynar. Terlediğimizde de suya girerdik. Büyüklerimiz ise, bağ bahçelerinde çalışır, tarlalarla ilgilenirlerdi. Mevsimin getirdiği işleri imece usulüyle birlikte yaparlardı. İmece, köylerde ve küçük kasabalarda yöre halkının bir araya gelerek, yardımlaşma içinde gönüllü olarak tek başına yapılamayan işleri hep birlikte yapmaktır. Eskiden bu dayanışma köy yaşamının en değerli geleneklerinden biriydi. Evlerin çoğu ahşaptan yapılmış olup, genelde iki katlıdır. Her bahçede bir harmanlık ahşap ev bulunur.

One of the most beautiful and natural examples of this spirit of mutual support in village life is the Kurudere Waterfall. The villagers would gather around the Kurudere Waterfall, chatting for hours to the soothing sound of the cool water, sharing the food they had brought, and sipping their tea while enjoying the magnificent natural surroundings. We children used to play joyfully by the water’s edge back then. The elders would share memories spanning from the past to the present, spending pleasant times that strengthened bonds of friendship and neighborliness. These delightful hours spent around the waterfall were not merely a gathering; they were a beautiful tradition that kept alive the village’s spirit of unity and togetherness.

Köy yaşamında yapılan bu birbirine yardımcı olma usulünün en güzel ve en doğal tanıklarından biri de Kurudere şelalesidir. Kurudere şelalesinin etrafında toplanan köy halkı, serin suyun huzur veren sesi eşliğinde saatlerce sohbet eder, yanlarında getirdikleri yiyecekleri paylaşır, çaylarını yudumlayarak o muhteşem doğanın tadını çıkarırlardı. Çocuklar yani biz, o dönemlerde neşeyle su kenarında oynardık. Büyükler geçmişten günümüze uzanan hatıraları anlatır, dostluk ve komşuluk bağlarını güçlendiren keyifli vakitler geçirirlerdi. Şelalenin etrafında geçirilen bu keyifli saatler, aslında sadece bir buluşma değildi; aynı zamanda köyün birlik ve beraberlik ruhunu yaşatan güzel bir gelenek haliydi.

When I arrived in the village of Esenler in Bartın, I felt both joy and sadness. This was the land where, as children, we played soccer, got into mischief, and were scolded by our father for coming home late at night. My visit to this village for the holiday was also a meaningful journey to reconnect with our roots. As I set foot on the land where I was born and raised, the traces of the past came alive one by one before my eyes. I visited the village cemetery and offered prayers at the graves of our relatives who have passed away. In this spiritual atmosphere, where silence and sorrow reigned, I remembered our elders with compassion and longing.

Bartın Esenler Köyüne geldiğimde içimde hem sevinç hem de hüzün vardı. Burası küçükken top oynadığımız, yaramazlık yaptığımız ve akşam eve geç geldiğimiz için babamızdan azar işittiğimiz topraklarımızdı. Bayram dolayısıyla geldiğim bu köyde zamanda köklerimize yeniden dokunmak için de anlamlı bir yolculuk olmuştu. Doğup büyüdüğümüz topraklara adım attığımda, geçmişin izleri de birer birer gözümde canlanmıştı. Köy mezarlığını ziyaret ederek bu dünyadan ayrılan akrabalarımızın kabirleri başında dua da etmiş oldum. Sessizliğin ve hüznün hakim olduğu bu manevi ortamlarda büyüklerimizi de rahmet ve özlemle andım.

Although the path to Kurudere is quite arduous, everyone loves sitting by the banks of this cool, quiet stream and chatting. To reach the waterfall, you head to the Dada neighborhood in Esenler Village. There is a stone bridge connecting the Dada neighborhood to Esenler Village. The waters of the waterfall flow beneath the bridge. Next to the bridge is a narrow, dirt path leading into the forest and up the mountain. You walk along this path to reach the spot where the waterfall flows. We walk for about 20 minutes along this narrow, dirt path with a slight incline. The path is quite narrow but has retained its natural character. This indicates that it is not a heavily used vehicle road, but rather a trail primarily used by hikers and villagers.

Kurudereye giden yol her ne kadar zahmetli olsa da herkes bu serin sessiz derenin kenarında oturmayı ve sohbet etmeyi çok seviyor. Şelaleye ulaşmak için, Esenler Köyündeki dada mahallesine gidiliyor. Dada mahallesini Esenler Köyüne bağlayan taştan yapılmış bir köprü var. Köprünün altından şelalenin suları geçmektedir. Köprünün yanında ormana ve dağa çıkılan dar ve topraklı yol bulunuyor. Bu yolda yürüyerek şelalenin aktığı yere gidiliyor. Bu hafif patikalı dar ve topraklı yoldan yaklaşık 20 dakika yürüyoruz. Yol oldukça dar ama doğal yapısını korumuş. Bu durum buranın yoğun kullanılan bir araç yolu değil, daha çok yürüyüşçülerin ve köylülerin kullandığı bir patika olduğunu gösteriyor.

The greenery and fresh air along the walking path bring a special sense of peace. Most of the trees in the area are pine trees. The sight of their tall trunks and branches forming natural tunnels adds a unique beauty to the walk. The path’s gentle slope and winding nature honestly make us wonder what lies ahead. This feeling excites us as well. The dry leaves falling from the trees’ branches create a colorful carpet on the ground. The trees’ needle-like leaves reflect the forest’s natural appearance and the impressions of the seasonal climate. The best part is when I emerge from the narrow, sloping path into an open area and see the lush green mountains standing tall and free before me.

Yürüyüş yolundaki yeşillik ve temiz hava insana ayrı bir huzur veriyor. Etraftaki ağaçlarının büyük bir kısmı çam türlerinden oluşuyor. Yüksek gövdeler ve dalların oluşturduğu doğal tünelleri anımsatan görüntü yürüyüşe ayrı bir güzellik katıyor. Yolun hafif eğimli ve kıvrımlı olması, önümüzde bizi nelerin beklediğini açıkçası meraklandırıyor. Bu his bizi de heyecanlandırıyor. Ağaçların dallarından dökülen kuru yapraklar toprağın üstünde rengarenk görünüyor. Ağaçların iğne yaprakları, ormanın doğal görünümünü ve mevsimsel iklimin izlenimlerini gösteriyor. En güzeli de dar ve eğimli yoldan açık bir alana çıktığımda, karşımda gördüğüm yemyeşil dağların güçlü ve özgür duruşları oluyor.

Although the fast pace and progress of modern life are changing everything today, the natural beauty of Esenler Village and the compassion and selflessness that the local people still show toward one another remain unchanged. Just seeing this firsthand and feeling that spirit brought me joy. As I gaze at the rushing waters of Kurudere, I can’t help but recall the memories of my childhood spent here.
