As the weather gradually cools and we prepare to enter the winter months, let me tell you about my final summer excursion—to the Uçansu Waterfall in Gündoğmuş—which will help you feel the warmth of summer once again. While it is true that every season possesses its own unique beauty, the fact that the summer season was coming to an end that day brought a touch of melancholy. Yet, knowing that every ending opens the door to new beginnings added a sense of sweet acceptance to that sadness.

We had reached the last week of August. Before schools reopened, we decided to take one final vacation in the Alanya district of Antalya. During our three-day getaway, we stayed in a quiet, peaceful neighborhood in Alanya that was steeped in history. The place—an old house, once belonging to Greeks, that had been converted into a guesthouse by a charming family—made us feel right at home. For this three-day trip, Uçansu Waterfall, located in the nearby district of Gündoğmuş, was one of the first destinations we chose to explore.

We set off early in the morning to reach the waterfall. Traveling from Alanya toward Manavgat, we arrived in the district of Gündoğmuş. From there, we turned at the junction marked "Kızılağaç," passed through the neighborhoods of Eskibağ and Kayabükü, and took the road that climbs upward toward the mountains. The road was winding, with some sections in poor condition. After driving along these winding roads for about half an hour, Uçansu Waterfall—also known as Çürükdere Waterfall—appeared right before us.
Şelaleye gidebilmek için, sabahın erken saatlerinde kalktık. Alanya'dan Manavgat yolu istikametinde ilerleyerek, Gündoğmuş ilçesine geldik. Buradan Kızılağaç yazan kavşağa yönelerek Eskibağ ve Kayabükü mahallelerini geçerek, dağa doğru yokuşa çıkan yola girdik. Yol virajlı ve bazı kesimlerde bozukluklar vardı. Virajlı yollarda yaklaşık yarım saat gittikten sonra , Uçansu şelalesi diğer adıyla Çürükdere şelalesi tam karşımızdaydı.

One of the things I love most about my nature excursions is the scenery I encounter along the way. While the destination is certainly important, the beauty I come across during the journey is just as valuable. In particular, as I head toward the source of the water, the sound of it echoing along the banks—along with the natural pools that form and the sight of water rushing and foaming between the rocks—never fails to thrill me.

Directly in front of us, a mass of water cascades vigorously from a height of approximately 70 meters, emerging from within a towering mountain characterized by shades of brown and black. The Uçancu Waterfall in Gündoğmuş is fed by melting snow from the Akdağ and Geyik Mountains—part of the Taurus range—which then flows down the mountainside to join the Alara Stream. The waterfall is at its most powerful during the spring months; however, even though we visited in August, the water was still flowing with great intensity. The water descends from two distinct points on the mountain face, seemingly breathing new life into the rugged terrain. Green grasses and various plants have begun to take root across the surface, which is otherwise dominated by dark brown and black tones.

There is a pool that has formed right in front of the waterfall. Those who wish to can step into the water to cool off—though I should mention that entering the water is not as easy as it might seem. The moment your foot touches the water, your immediate instinct is to pull it back out; it is truly freezing, enough to make your whole body turn to ice. If you want to swim here, you have to give your body some time to adjust. Although my spouse and I found it difficult at first, we eventually grew accustomed to the temperature after staying in for a while. We got into the water and tried to cool off by positioning ourselves directly beneath the cascading flow. It was delightful to feel the foam created by the falling water against our skin. There are rocks where the water pours down; we climbed onto them to take some photos. The water flows with such force that I couldn't even hear my spouse speaking to me. Many people who approached the edge of the pool would step in, only to turn right back around. The water was incredibly cold, yet remarkably clean. Around the pool, there are wooden benches where you can sit while partially submerged. A raised, rocky area has been set up right in front of the waterfall, where visitors capture images to immortalize the moment. The color of the water is so beautiful that it practically shimmers, dazzling anyone who looks at it.

A little further past the waterfall, there is a canyon-like area formed amidst steep cliffs. This is the point from which the water originates. We waded into the water between the rocks and ventured a bit further; here, the water becomes both deeper and colder. Yet, the surrounding greenery—with tree roots winding through the rocks and patches of grass growing atop them—is truly beautiful. We wanted to continue, but the water was too cold and deep, and there were no rocks above the water line where we could rest. Consequently, we turned back from within the canyon without going any further.

We entered the water in the pool beneath the waterfall and a little further along. Holding onto the rocks, we stood beneath the water as it cascaded down with great vigor from above. In places like this, one truly realizes how beautiful nature is. As the water trickles down through the rocks, blending with the surrounding greenery, it creates a stunning landscape. The beauty of this waterfall, of course, stems from the Akdağ and Geyik Mountains nearby. The water, which pours down in several streams, feeds the Alara Creek—a significant local waterway in the region.
Şelalenin aktığı havuzda ve havuzun biraz ilerinde suya girdik. Kayalara tutunduk.

Meltwater from the high mountains branches off in various directions, only to converge again at a single point. It winds through the rocks and glides amidst the greenery. Finding its way between the large boulders that block its path, it forms small, scattered pools—then discovers new routes, vanishing once more into the surrounding beauty. We are able to witness only a fragment of this splendor.

For me, the point of such trips is not merely to snap a few photos and head back. I like to pause at the places I pass through—to observe my surroundings and listen to the sounds of the environment. I enjoy exploring paths that lead in different directions, taking a closer look at flowers, plants, and trees I have never seen before. This evokes a sense of becoming one with nature. Uçansu Waterfall will remain in my memories as one of those places that inspires such reflections.

We spent about two hours at Uçancu Waterfall. After getting out of the water, we sat on the benches nearby, had something to eat, and listened to the sound of the water. We had two options for the return trip: one was to cross over the mountain peaks and head directly down to the center of Alanya, while the other was to simply retrace the route we had taken to get there. Naturally, in the spirit of discovering new paths, we chose the route that wound through the mountains and hills. Although such roads can be a bit rough, we find them quite enjoyable. We almost always come across a fountain by the roadside. We also loved encountering adobe houses that captured the authentic atmosphere of village life, as well as flocks of sheep and goats, and gardens planted with tomatoes, peppers, and all sorts of other vegetables right next to the homes.

It took us about two hours to make our way back along the mountain road. We had concluded what was perhaps our final waterfall excursion of the summer here. Until we meet again on new paths and for new discoveries...
Dağ yolundan geri dönmemiz yaklaşık iki saatimizi almıştı. Yazın belkide son şelale gezimizi burada tamamlamıştıık. Yeni yollarda ve yeni keşiflerde tekrar görüşmek dileğiyle...

That converted old guesthouse sounds like such a cozy place to stay for a few days. Driving up those winding mountain roads sounds a bit stressful though, especially when they are in rough shape.
Our guesthouse was truly beautiful, overlooking the sea. The interior was decorated with historical touches and remnants from old Greek houses. You could feel the traces of the past in every corner. Yes, the road was a little rough, but the scenery along the way, with its mountains and hills, made the whole journey worthwhile. The natural beauty around us was a real feast for the eyes and lifted our spirits.
Amazing waterfall and natural landscapes a beautiful place for doing trekking ❤️
I’m glad you liked it! I really love these places where the water rushes down from high above, almost as if it’s flying. Exploring places like this brings me so much peace and joy.

The place is absolutely beautiful 😻, I'm a huge fan of hiking and these waterfall posts, thanks for sharing bro!! 🫂🤝
The place is so beautiful that it leaves me speechless while reading your blog. It looks like something straight out of a movie! Good for you that you got to explore that place before summer ended. I’m sure that during winter, you’ll prefer to stay cozy indoors instead. Hehe.
I like the film analogy. I go on trips even in the winter; as long as it’s not raining, there are plenty of places to explore.
