La catedral de Jaca: románico y mucho más // The cathedral of Jaca: Romanesque and much more

Hola querido hiver.

Hi, dear hiver.

Last December, I had to go to the city of Jaca to run an errand, and I didn't miss the opportunity to visit one of the oldest Romanesque churches on the Iberian Peninsula, the Cathedral of Saint Peter. Join me in enjoying a cathedral founded in the 11th century, which has been influenced by the styles of religious art that have existed since then.

IMG_1040.JPG

IMG_1042.JPG

IMG_1043.JPG

IMG_1044.JPG

The exterior is quite sober except for the decorations on the facades. Access to the temple is via the Cathedral square, which is protected by a portico. The capitals are striking, depicting passages from the Bible, which were a way of bringing knowledge of the Bible to the people, who were then largely illiterate.

Another striking feature is the alternating square borders that surround and highlight certain details both on the exterior and later on the interior. It is called taqueado jaqués or ajedrezado because it was first used here and then spread to other Romanesque churches along the Camino de Santiago. Jaca is part of the French route that crosses the Pyrenees in its central part, hence the great importance of this cathedral.

IMG_1047.JPG

IMG_1045.JPG

IMG_1048.JPG

IMG_1050.JPG

Each chapel deserves a publication in its own right. Almost all of them were built from the 16th century onwards, when the temple was practically rebuilt due to its dilapidated state. The wealthy families and entities that participated in its construction wanted to leave a reflection of their power for posterity.

IMG_1051.JPG

IMG_1053.JPG

IMG_1054.JPG

We therefore find Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque details on both the façades and the altarpieces. The Romanesque style was practically reduced to the Main Chapel and the two chapels flanking it.

IMG_1055.JPG

IMG_1058.JPG

IMG_1061.JPG

IMG_1062.JPG

The Main Chapel is surprising due to the absence of an altarpiece. Instead, we find the organ and the choir. However, when we look up, we can enjoy some beautiful frescoes by Fray Manuel Bayeu, who was Francisco de Goya's brother-in-law. The theme depicted is episodes from the life of Saint Peter. It is the brightest spot in the cathedral, where all eyes converge thanks to the large side windows.

IMG_1064.JPG

IMG_1070.JPG

IMG_1072.JPG

IMG_1065.JPG

IMG_1066.JPG

Another chapel that demands our attention is that of Saint Jerome. Its altarpiece adapts to the shape of the walls as if it were a tapestry, and my eyes were inevitably drawn to the Romanesque ironwork that complements the ensemble.

IMG_1069.JPG

IMG_1067.JPG

IMG_1071.JPG

IMG_1074.JPG

IMG_1076.JPG

IMG_1079.JPG

The north side of the nave features another set of interesting chapels. The first notable one is the tomb of Bishop Pedro Baguer, which is the first one we come across when facing the altar. Apologies for the blurry image; the lighting conditions were not ideal.

IMG_1093.JPG

IMG_1082.JPG

IMG_1083.JPG

The second thing I liked most about the cathedral, apart from the high altar, is the Chapel of Santa Orosia. This saint is the patron saint of the city of Jaca and its diocese, which is why there is a brotherhood responsible for organising everything related to her devotion. The chapel dates back to the 17th century, so it is Baroque in style.

IMG_1085.JPG

IMG_1084.JPG

IMG_1086.JPG

IMG_1088.JPG

Something that goes unnoticed when entering the darkness of the chapel are the paintings that completely decorate the walls. They depict moments in the life of Saint Orosia. They were painted in the 18th century and restored in 1999.

IMG_1092.JPG

IMG_1090.JPG

IMG_1091.JPG

IMG_1094.JPG

The next chapel is also spectacular. It is dedicated to the Trinity and contains the baptismal font. It dates back to 1572.

IMG_1095.JPG

IMG_1096.JPG

IMG_1097.JPG

IMG_1098.JPG

We ended our visit to the interior of the cathedral by returning to the south-facing nave. Before reaching the door, we passed through another couple of chapels that seemed simple after everything we had seen before, and we exited once again through the doorway we had entered from the square. I still had time to take a stroll around the city, but I'll tell you about that in another post.

It's quite here now, and taking this tour with you of the cathedral, surrounded by old cold stone structures makes me feel even colder 🥶

Let me inform you that the cathedral is well conditioned and the heating was working normally. 😁

Now we are collecting in Spain what you have left of the storm Ingrid. In my city we only notice the wind.

What an impressive architecture. Seeing all those layers of history, from Romanesque to Baroque in one place is fascinating. I loved how you pointed out the frescoes. That bright spot in the cathedral really shines through your photos. Thanks for taking us along on this journey, Paloma 🤗

The cathedral is almost a thousand years old, and everyone who passed by wanted to leave their mark, hehe. It is fascinating to see the mixture that has accumulated over the centuries. I'm glad to know that you liked it, thank you for joining me! 🤗

Wow! Qué belleza de esta catedral. <3

Good afternoon, Paloma. I won't deny that just seeing the word "Romanesque" made me emotional. Although it's true that there's a lot of later work inside, the mere presence of that stone and that architecture gives me goosebumps.

I won't deny that I would have liked to see more Romanesque art inside, more paintings and sculptures. But what is there is majestic. I'm not a big fan of Baroque art, but I won't deny that it has its expressiveness and its charm.

You're absolutely right that each chapel deserves its own post... it's just a matter of getting around to it.

I've saved for last an element that fascinates me: the capitals. What a marvel, what wonderful stonework... and what different values compared to today: not a single signature.

Thank you so much for this magical journey.

I wish you a great start to the week. Hugs!

I didn't know you were so passionate about Romanesque art. In the cathedral they also have the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art and there is Romanesque and Gothic. I know I was inside so many years ago that I don't remember anything anymore. 😂

Romanesque architecture is a wonder, despite the flourishes that came later, it transmits with a special strength.

Happy week. Hugs!
