On our second day in Gerês, we woke up with that mix of tired legs and a clear head that only days well spent in the mountains can provide. The plan was simple and unhurried, as befits these things. To go to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lapa, one of those places I had heard about many times, but had never truly visited. And in Gerês, taking your time makes all the difference, especially since 10 km takes 20 minutes by car, on a whirlwind of twists and turns.

Arriving at the sanctuary already prepares the spirit for what comes next. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lapa appears nestled among these giant rocks, protected by them. It doesn't impose itself on the landscape, it integrates with it. It seems to have grown there naturally, as if it had always been part of that stone formation.

The rocks surrounding the sanctuary are, without exaggeration, impressive. Large, irregular, like those we saw in Monsanto. Walking through them is a brutal experience. Even those who aren't religious feel that this is a special place, marked by centuries of history and beliefs.

The sanctuary's origin is linked to one of these stories that blend with the landscape. It is said that the image of Our Lady was found hidden in a cave, a natural opening between the rocks, where it was placed to protect her in difficult times. From then on, the place gained fame and became a point of pilgrimage, attracting the faithful seeking protection, fulfilled promises, or simply a moment of retreat away from the noise of the world.

The building itself is simple, without great excesses, but it carries enormous symbolic weight. It doesn't take long inside to realize that the value of that space lies not in its architecture, but in what it represents. A tranquility difficult to explain is felt, enhanced by the silence and the natural surroundings.

After exploring the sanctuary and the space around it, we continued to climb to the viewpoint. Contrary to what one might expect in such a rugged landscape, the access is well-structured, with iron walkways and handrails that greatly facilitate the climb. Even so, it's still a bit of a physical challenge, especially after that hike to Misarela. The walkways help, provide safety, and allow you to appreciate the scenery without constantly looking at your feet.

As you climb, the sanctuary recedes into the distance, becoming smaller and smaller, squeezed between the granite blocks. The valley slowly opens up, and the sensation of height begins to become noticeable. Up there, the viewpoint rewards all the effort. The view is wide, open, with mountains stretching as far as the eye can see and a landscape that seems endless. The sun came out, and we rested a little and enjoyed the scenery.

The descent is done calmly, taking advantage of the handrails and walkways. Before leaving, I took one more walk around the sanctuary. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lapa is not a place of large crowds, at least not that day, nor of obvious attractions.
I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health

In the 11th photo, where does the water come from? Does it come from a pump or does it come directly from the ground? I'm curious.
Hi there @isdarmady. The water comes directly from the mountain but there is a pump to pull the water. Thanks for stopping by 😊
