It's not every day you manage to convince grandmothers to leave the house for an adventure, and I confess that this in itself is a small victory. On one of those weekends, we decided to take ours to Valença, a destination we love and which, incredibly, they had never visited. The day wasn't exactly inviting, with a sky heavy with that mixture of gray and promises of rain, but we decided that wouldn't stop us. After all, family adventures don't choose the weather, and if the grandmothers agreed, let's go.

Não é todos os dias que se consegue convencer as avós a sair de casa para uma aventura, e confesso que isso por si só já é uma pequena vitória. Num destes fins-de-semana, decidimos levar as nossas para Valença, um destino que adoramos e que, por incrível que pareça elas nunca tinham visitado. O dia não estava propriamente convidativo, com um céu carregado com aquela mistura de cinzento e promessas de chuva, mas decidimos que isso não nos ia impedir. Afinal, aventuras em família não escolhem tempo e se as avós concordaram, vamos embora.

We arrived in the city and the first thing that caught our eye was the size of the Fortress. Whenever I go in there, I imagine I'm in a bygone era. The walls, the heavy wooden gates, and the narrow streets make me think of princesses, knights, and the like. For the grandmothers, I confess that my excitement was contagious. They walked from one side to the other, asking about the towers and imagining what it would have been like to live there centuries ago. And we, trying to be the perfect tour guides, shared little anecdotes. Some learned on our previous trips, others invented on the spot, just to see their faces. And of course, the little one always helped.

Chegámos à cidade e a primeira coisa que lhes saltou à vista foi o tamanho da Fortaleza. Sempre que entro lá imagino que estou num tempo passado. As muralhas, as portas pesadas de madeira e as ruelas estreitas fazem-me pensar em princesas, cavaleiros e afins. Para as avós, confesso que a minha excitação era contagiante. Elas andavam de um lado para o outro, a perguntar sobre as torres e a imaginar como teria sido viver ali séculos atrás. E nós, a tentar ser os guias turísticos perfeitos, íamos contando pequenas curiosidades. Algumas aprendidas nas nossas viagens anteriores, outras inventadas na hora, só para ver as caras delas. E claro que a pequena ajudava sempre.

We chose to explore the interior of the Fortress first. It's incredible to walk through those stone streets, especially when you know that, hundreds of years ago, soldiers patrolled exactly where we were now walking. We explained to the grandmothers that the walled city was once a strategic point for defense against invaders, and they, with that sparkle in their eyes, began to imagine battles, knights, and bonfires. The little one went up and down steps and imagined sword fights, and the grandmothers joined in the game.

Optámos por explorar o interior da Fortaleza primeiro. É incrível andar por aquelas ruas de pedra, especialmente quando se sabe que, há centenas de anos, soldados patrulhavam exatamente onde nós agora caminhávamos. Explicamos às avós que a cidade murada já foi um ponto estratégico para defesa contra invasores, e elas, com aquele brilho nos olhos, começaram a imaginar batalhas, cavaleiros e fogueiras. A pequena subia e descia degraus e imaginava lutas de espadas e as avós acompanhavam a brincadeira.

After a good walk, we decided to take a break and have a snack. It was very cold, and our imaginations couldn't hide it. We had something hot to warm our hands and went to see the view of the Minho River. The grandmothers watched, smiled, and took photos—some posed, others blurry—which will probably later become part of those displayed in picture frames at home and the subject of conversations at future lunches.

Depois de uma boa caminhada, decidimos fazer uma pausa e lanchar. Estava muito frio, e a imaginação não o conseguia esconder. Tomamos algo quente para aquecer as mãos e fomos ver a vista para o Rio Minho. As avós observavam, sorriam e tiravam fotos, algumas em pose, outras desfocadas, que provavelmente mais tarde farão parte daquelas que estão expostas lá em casa em molduras e conversas nos próximos almoços.

The funniest thing happened when we tried to follow a map the little one had made, which we had brought. Amidst laughter, we ended up getting slightly lost and not finding the place she had marked. It was a funny moment because everyone, without exception, felt a little confused. In the end, it turned out to be the highlight of the day and the memory that will be remembered most quickly.

O mais engraçado aconteceu quando tentámos seguir um mapa que a pequena fez e que tínhamos levado. Entre risadas, acabámos por nos perder ligeiramente e não encontrar o lugar que ela marcou. Foi um momento engraçado, porque todos, sem exceção, nos sentíamos um pouco confusos. No final, acabou por ser o ponto alto do dia e a memória que vai ser lembrada mais depressa.

Before returning home, we took another walk around the walls and towers to admire the scenery and feel the fresh air under the cloudy sky. The feeling of sharing this place with the grandmothers was, without a doubt, special. For them, it was their first visit; for us, it was an opportunity to relive Valença with new eyes, through their curiosity and joy. And, deep down, I realized that you don't need sunny days or plans to create memories. All it takes is the will, family, and, of course, a little courage to explore the unknown.

Antes de voltarmos para casa, demos mais uma volta pelos muros e torres, para ver a paisagem e sentir o ar fresco que se sentia com o céu nublado. A sensação de partilhar este lugar com as avós foi, sem dúvida, especial. Para elas, foi a primeira visita, para nós, foi uma oportunidade de reviver Valença com novos olhos, através da curiosidade e alegria delas. E, no fundo, percebi que não é preciso dias de sol radioso ou planos para criar memórias. Basta vontade, família e, claro, um bocadinho de coragem para explorar o desconhecido.

On the way back, as we drove along the road, I looked back and saw the grandmothers chatting animatedly with our little one about the outing. And so we witnessed a moment of pure family happiness.

No caminho de regresso, enquanto seguíamos pela estrada, olhei para trás e vi as avós a conversar animadamente com a nossa pequena sobre o passeio. E assim presenciamos um momento de pura felicidade familiar.
