We go back in time to tell you about the end of our vacation in Gerês.
The last day always has that bittersweet taste. On the one hand, there's already accumulated tiredness, and your head starts organizing the mental list of real life. On the other hand, there's a desire to squeeze time until the last drop. In Gerês, this is even more pronounced. This is not a place to visit in a hurry. Therefore, to close the vacation and the festivities, we decided to go to the village of Gerês for a fitting farewell.

Voltamos atras no tempo para vos contar sobre o fim das férias no Gêres.
O último dia tem sempre aquele sabor agridoce. Por um lado, já há cansaço acumulado e a cabeça começa a organizar a lista mental da vida real. Por outro, há uma vontade de espremer o tempo até à última gota. No Gerês, isso ganha ainda mais peso. Este não é um lugar para se visitar com pressa. Por isso, para fechar as férias e também as festas, decidimos ir até à Vila do Gerês para uma despedida à altura.

The village of Gerês is not large. Its history is linked to the thermal waters, known since Roman times, when hot baths were already used for rest, healing, and socializing. Later, in the 19th century, Gerês became a destination for elites, doctors, and travelers seeking the benefits of the thermal baths and the pure mountain air. Today, it remains a mandatory stop for anyone visiting the Peneda-Gerês National Park, functioning almost as a gateway.

A Vila do Gerês não é grande. A sua história está ligada às águas termais, conhecidas desde a época romana, quando os banhos quentes já eram usados para descanso, cura e convívio. Mais tarde, no século XIX, o Gerês tornou-se destino de elites, médicos e viajantes que procuravam os benefícios das termas e o ar puro da serra. Hoje, continua a ser um ponto de passagem obrigatório para quem visita o Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês, funcionando quase como uma porta de entrada .

Strolling through the village on that last day was different. Perhaps because it's still the festive season, perhaps because it's winter, we still find some Christmas decorations scattered throughout the streets. Simple lights, modest ornaments, but enough to give a certain coziness to the atmosphere. It was curious to see the Christmas spirit mixed with the intense green of the mountains and the constant sound of water running nearby. We had never been here at this time of year.

Passear pela vila nesse último dia foi diferente. Talvez por ainda ser época festiva, talvez por ser inverno, ainda encontrámos algumas decorações de Natal espalhadas pelas ruas. Luzes simples, enfeites modestos, mas suficientes para dar um certo aconchego ao ambiente. Foi curioso ver o espírito natalício misturado com o verde intenso da serra e o som constante da água a correr ali perto. Nunca ca tínhamos estado nesta altura.

As it couldn't be otherwise, the farewell had to include good food. We chose to have lunch at Restaurante Lurdes Capela, one of those places that doesn't need grand presentations or reinvented dishes to impress. Here, the strength lies in tradition. The space is simple, welcoming, and you immediately feel that it's a restaurant designed for those who like to eat well, without haste or pretension.

Como não podia deixar de ser, a despedida tinha de incluir boa comida. Escolhemos almoçar no Restaurante Lurdes Capela, um daqueles sítios que não precisa de grandes apresentações nem de pratos reinventados para impressionar. Aqui, a força está na tradição. O espaço é simples, acolhedor, e sente-se imediatamente que é um restaurante pensado para quem gosta de comer bem, sem pressas nem pretensões.

The food follows the same logic. Honest flavors, well executed, with that homemade touch that reminds you of long family lunches. It's the kind of restaurant where there's no rush when you're at the table. You talk more, chew slowly, appreciate.

A comida segue essa mesma lógica. Sabores honestos, bem executados, com aquele toque caseiro que faz lembrar almoços longos em família. É o tipo de restaurante onde não há pressa quando estamos à mesa. Conversa-se mais, mastiga-se devagar, aprecia-se.

After lunch, all that was left was to walk a little and accept that the trip was coming to an end. And that's where one of the great advantages of taking a trip like this comes in, especially to Gerês. This kind of getaway isn't just about seeing new things. It's about disconnecting, recalibrating, remembering that the world isn't just about schedules, notifications, and routines.

Depois do almoço, restou-nos apenas caminhar um pouco e aceitar que a viagem estava a chegar ao fim. E é aqui que entra uma das grandes vantagens de fazer uma viagem destas, especialmente ao Gerês. Este tipo de escapadinha não serve apenas para ver coisas novas. Serve para desligar, para recalibrar, para lembrar que o mundo não é só horários, notificações e rotinas.

Furthermore, Gerês has this rare ability to please both those seeking adventure and those who just want to relax. You can walk for miles, climb challenging trails, or simply sit on a bench admiring the scenery. Everyone finds their own pace.
We returned home with less hurry, lighter heads, and full bellies.

Além disso, o Gerês tem essa capacidade rara de agradar tanto a quem procura aventura como a quem só quer parar. Pode-se caminhar quilómetros, subir trilhos exigentes, ou simplesmente sentar num banco a olhar para a paisagem. Cada um encontra o seu ritmo.
Voltamos para casa com menos pressa, a cabeça mais leve e a barriga cheia.
