Póvoa de Varzim - City Center / Riding Portugal

It had been a few months since we last visited the Póvoa de Varzim waterfront. Normally, at this time of year, we'd be exploring the Christmas markets in our country, listening to Christmas music and marveling at the colorful lights. This year, due to circumstances and the H1N1 flu, that wasn't possible, and I confess we missed the tradition a lot. That day we decided to simply go out without any big plans and ended up stopping here to see what this beautiful city had to offer.

Há já alguns meses que não visitávamos a marginal da Póvoa de Varzim. Normalmente, nesta altura do ano, estávamos a percorrer os mercados de Natal do nosso país, a ouvir músicas de Natal e a maravilhar-nos com as luzes coloridas. Este ano, por força das circunstâncias e da Gripe A, isso não foi possível, e confesso que sentimos imensa falta da tradição. Neste dia decidimos simplesmente sair sem grandes planos e acabámos por parar aqui, para ver o que esta bela cidade tinha para nos oferecer.

Arriving at the waterfront is always a little charming and, for me, always a source of memories. The sea, the breeze, and the smell of salt immediately make us think of holidays, even though summer is months away. The streets were quieter than in previous years as many were probably already leaving the city for New Year's Eve, but this made the experience even more pleasant. Without the usual crowds, it was possible to stroll freely, observe the small Christmas decorations, and simply enjoy the afternoon with family.

Chegar à marginal é sempre um pequeno encanto e para mim sempre uma fonte de memórias. O mar, a brisa e o cheiro a sal faz-nos pensar imediatamente em férias, mesmo estando a meses do Verão. As ruas estavam mais calmas do que em anos anteriores, provavelmente muitos já estavam a deixar a cidade para a passagem de ano, mas isso acabou por tornar a experiência ainda mais agradável. Sem as multidões habituais foi possível passear à vontade, observar as pequenas decorações de Natal e simplesmente aproveitar a tarde em família.

The walk began calmly, with relaxed steps and ever-attentive eyes. The terraces were somewhat lively, some families sat enjoying the sun, and children tried out their Christmas presents. There were still lights and decorations, and we managed to recreate some photos we had taken last year to understand the evolution. It's incredible how certain places manage to maintain their essence, even when everything around them changes.

O passeio começou tranquilo, com passos descontraídos e olhos sempre atentos. As esplanadas tinham algum movimento, algumas famílias sentavam-se a aproveitar o sol, e os miudos experimentavam as sua prendas de Natal. Ainda havia luzes e decorações, e conseguimos recriar algumas fotos que tínhamos tirado no ano passado, para perceber a evolução. É incrível como certos lugares conseguem manter a essência, mesmo quando tudo à volta muda.

As we walked along the seafront, we saw children running on the sand, laughing and playing as they dodged the small waves that reached their feet. The sun shone brightly enough to give that golden touch to the photos, and we stopped a few times to capture the moment.

Enquanto caminhávamos junto ao mar, vimos as crianças a correr na areia, a rir e a brincar enquanto fugiam das pequenas ondas que chegavam até aos pés. O sol brilhava o suficiente para dar aquele toque dourado às fotos, e paramos algumas vezes para capturar o momento.

Another detail I love about the Póvoa de Varzim waterfront is that we can find tradition and modern spaces side by side. We can still see old cafes and pastry shops that remind us of times past, while new shops and terraces give contemporary life to the space. We sat down, ordered a hot drink, and watched the comings and goings of the waterfront.

Outro detalhe que adoro na marginal da Póvoa de Varzim é que podemos encontrar a tradição e espaços modernos uns ao lado dos outros. Ainda podemos ver antigos cafés e pastelarias que nos lembram tempos passados, enquanto novas lojas e esplanadas dão vida contemporânea ao espaço. Sentámo-nos , pedimos uma bebida quente e observámos o vai e vem da marginal.

Recreating last year's photos, feeling the sun on our faces, and laughing at the day's little discoveries transformed the outing into a new memory. Even though the H1N1 flu limited some traditions this year, the magic of an afternoon with family, with the sea as our companion and the shoreline as our backdrop, showed us that we can find special moments even when we least expect them.

Recriar as fotos do ano passado, sentir o sol na cara e rir com as pequenas descobertas do dia transformou o passeio numa nova memória. Por muito que a Gripe A tenha limitado algumas tradições este ano, a magia de uma tarde em família, com o mar como companhia e a marginal a servir de cenário, mostrou-nos que podemos encontrar momentos especiais mesmo quando não estamos à espera.
