Porto City - Jardins Palácio de Cristal - Part 1 / Riding Portugal

It had been years since I'd visited the Crystal Palace Gardens. Long enough to have created a comfortable, perhaps even slightly romanticized, memory of a more tranquil space than what I found. The day was clear, the light strong but pleasant, and the garden was crowded with tourists with maps in hand, families, people walking seemingly without a specific destination. A constant mix of languages, footsteps, brief pauses for photographs.

Já não vinha aos Jardins do Palácio de Cristal há anos. Tempo suficiente para ter criado uma memória confortável, talvez até um pouco romantizada, de um espaço mais tranquilo do que aquele que encontrei. O dia estava claro, luz forte mas agradável, e o jardim cheio com turistas com mapas na mão, famílias, pessoas a passear aparentemente sem rumo certo. Uma mistura constante de línguas, passos, pequenas pausas para fotografias.

What hadn't changed was the structure of the place. The well-defined paths, the open viewpoints overlooking the Douro River, the feeling that the garden was designed to guide the eye. The original Crystal Palace no longer exists; it was demolished in the last century, but the memory remains in the name and the organization of the space. In its place today is the Super Bock Arena, a more enclosed, functional building where concerts and events take place. It's not a building that particularly fits the idea of ​​a garden, but it fulfills its function. And it's noticeable that it's used.

O que não mudou foi a estrutura do lugar. Os caminhos bem definidos, os miradouros abertos sobre o Douro, a sensação de que o jardim foi pensado para guiar o olhar. O Palácio de Cristal original já não existe, foi demolido no século passado, mas a memória mantém-se no nome e na organização do espaço. No seu lugar está hoje o Super Bock Arena, uma construção mais fechada, funcional, onde se realizam concertos e eventos. Não é um edifício que se encaixe particularmente bem com a ideia de jardim, mas cumpre a sua função. E nota-se que é usado.

I wandered aimlessly, without looking for anything specific, just walking through the various levels of the garden. There's an impressive diversity of trees and plants, many of them identified with small, discreet plaques. I like this attention to detail; I like knowing what I'm seeing. Not everyone stops to read, but knowing the information is there makes a difference.

Caminhei sem destino, sem procurar nada especifico, apenas a percorrer os vários níveis do jardim. Há uma diversidade impressionante de árvores e plantas, muitas delas identificadas com pequenas placas discretas. Gosto dessa atenção ao detalhe, gosto de saber o que estou a ver. Nem toda a gente pára para ler, mas saber que a informação está ali faz diferença.

What surprised and delighted me was the constant presence of animals. Chickens, ducks, geese, and, of course, peacocks. They roam freely, as if that were more their territory than ours. They approach people with obvious expectation, accustomed to receiving food. There's something curious about that.
The sounds of the garden are irregular. There are moments of relative silence, interrupted by louder voices, laughter, and the quacking of ducks.

O que me surpreendeu e deixou feliz foi a presença constante de animais. Galinhas, patos, gansos e, claro, pavões. Andam soltos, como se aquele fosse mais o território deles do que nosso. Aproximam-se das pessoas com expectativa evidente, habituados a receber comida. Há algo de curioso nisso.
O som do jardim é irregular. Há momentos de silêncio relativo, interrompidos por vozes mais altas, risos, e o grasnar dos patos.

The view remains one of the strongest points of the place. The Douro River below, the city sprawling on the banks, boats passing slowly. It's a familiar image, almost repeated on postcards, but in person it retains some power. Perhaps because it doesn't depend solely on the framing, but on the surrounding context.
But I'll leave those views for a future post.

A vista continua a ser um dos pontos mais fortes do lugar. O Douro lá em baixo, a cidade a espalhar-se nas margens, barcos a passar devagar. É uma imagem conhecida, quase repetida em postais, mas ao vivo mantém alguma força. Talvez porque não depende apenas do enquadramento, mas do contexto à volta.
Mas essas vistas deixo para um proximo post.

Not everything convinced me. The number of tourists, while understandable, takes away some of the tranquility I associated with the space. It's not exactly uncomfortable, but it alters the experience.

Nem tudo me convenceu. A quantidade de turistas, embora compreensível, retira alguma da calma que eu associava ao espaço. Não chega a ser desconfortável, mas altera a experiência.

While I was taking some of these photos, a peacock slowly crossed one of the paths, indifferent to the presence of those watching it. People stopped, some took pictures, others just looked. There was a brief, almost collective silence. Then everything returned to its usual rhythm.

Quando estava a tirar algumas destas fotos um pavão atravessou lentamente um dos caminhos, indiferente à presença de quem o observava. As pessoas pararam, algumas fotografaram, outras apenas olharam. Houve um silêncio breve, quase coletivo. Depois tudo retomou ao ritmo habitual.

The garden remains interesting, alive, but different from the memory I had. Perhaps it's not the space that has changed the most. Perhaps it was me. Or perhaps it's just the perspective I had of the places I visited when I was younger, where everything seemed bigger than it actually is, and seemed farther away than it truly is.

O jardim continua interessante, vivo, mas diferente da memória que tinha. Talvez não seja o espaço que mudou mais. Talvez tenha sido eu. Ou talvez seja só a perspectiva que eu tinha dos lugares que visitei quando era mais pequena, em que tudo parecia ser maior do que é na realidade, e parecia ficar mais longe do que verdadeiramente fica.
