Parque do Arnado - Ponte de Lima / Riding Portugal

Returning to Ponte de Lima is something we do without much effort. It's not one of those trips that requires prior planning. The town takes care of that on its own. This time, however, there was a blank space on our personal map, the Arnado Park. Although we had passed by the area several times, we had never gone in. It was always left for next time. This time was the first.

Voltar a Ponte de Lima continua a ser algo que fazemos sem grande esforço. Não é daquelas viagens que exigem planeamento prévio. A vila trata disso sozinha. Desta vez, no entanto, havia um espaço em branco no mapa pessoal, o Parque do Arnado. Apesar de já termos passado várias vezes nas imediações, nunca tínhamos entrado. Ficava sempre para a próxima. Desta vez foi mesmo a primeira.

Is located next to the Lima River, a few minutes from the historic center, but the feeling upon entering is immediate: the pace slows down. The noise of the town almost completely disappears, the space opens up, and the river becomes the main reference point. It's a discreet park, without excesses, which works precisely because it is well integrated into its location.

Fica encostado ao rio Lima, a poucos minutos do centro histórico, mas a sensação ao entrar é imediata: o ritmo abranda. O barulho da vila desaparece quase por completo, o espaço abre-se e o rio passa a ser a principal referência. É um parque discreto, sem excessos, que funciona precisamente por estar bem integrado no lugar onde se insere.

Before becoming a park, this area played a decisive role in the history of Ponte de Lima. For centuries, the Arnado was the town's river port, at a time when the river was an essential route for transport and trade. This relationship with Lima helped define the growth and importance of the town in the region. Today, although the river no longer serves that function, it continues to profoundly mark the space.

Antes de ser parque, esta zona teve um papel determinante na história de Ponte de Lima. Durante séculos, o Arnado foi o porto fluvial da vila, numa altura em que o rio era uma via essencial de transporte e comércio. Essa relação com o Lima ajudou a definir o crescimento e a importância da vila na região. Hoje, apesar de o rio já não ter essa função, continua a marcar profundamente o espaço.

With the end of port activity, the Arnado River was renovated and transformed into an urban park. The intervention was carried out carefully, without altering the character of the place. Instead of an excessively modern park, a simple and functional space was chosen, preserving the memory and historical connection with the river.

Com o fim da atividade portuária, o Arnado foi requalificado e transformado num parque urbano. A intervenção foi feita com cuidado, sem descaracterizar o local. Em vez de um parque excessivamente moderno, optou-se por um espaço simples e funcional, que preserva a memória e a ligação histórica ao rio.

Walking through the park, you realize that it is more diverse than it seems at first glance. The Arnado integrates several themed gardens, organized as a small journey through the history of gardening.
The Roman Garden recreates the idea of ​​a classic space for contemplation, with a simple and symmetrical organization, inspired by ancient Roman peristyles, where water and geometry played a central role.

Ao percorrer o parque, percebe-se que ele é mais diverso do que aparenta à primeira vista. O Arnado integra vários jardins temáticos, organizados como uma pequena viagem pela história da jardinagem.
O Jardim Romano recria a ideia de um espaço clássico de contemplação, com uma organização simples e simétrica, inspirada nos antigos peristilos romanos, onde a água e a geometria tinham um papel central.

This is followed by the Renaissance Garden, marked by a more formal composition, with well-defined geometric lines, fountains, and a more controlled relationship between nature and architecture.
Further on, the Baroque Garden introduces a more ornate design, with trimmed hedges, topiary, and a certain sense of theatricality, typical of European gardens of the 17th and 18th centuries.
In contrast, the Labyrinth Garden offers a more playful experience. A plant path that invites you to get lost for a few moments before reaching the center, where we climb to a bandstand.

Segue-se o Jardim da Renascença, marcado por uma composição mais formal, com linhas geométricas bem definidas, repuxos e uma relação mais controlada entre a natureza e a arquitetura.
Mais adiante, o Jardim Barroco introduz um desenho mais ornamentado, com sebes recortadas, topiarias e um certo sentido de teatralidade, típico dos jardins europeus dos séculos XVII e XVIII.
Em contrapartida, o Jardim Labirinto oferece uma experiência mais lúdica. Um percurso vegetal que convida a perder-se por momentos, antes de chegar ao centro, onde subimos a um coreto.

In addition to these gardens, the park includes a botanical garden with a greenhouse, where species that need more controlled conditions are concentrated, and a lake with aquatic plants that adds freshness and tranquility to the space.
Scattered throughout the park are also several elements linked to the local agricultural tradition, such as a granary, a threshing floor, granite water tanks, and old irrigation structures, which help to understand the historical relationship between the landscape, agriculture, and the river.

Para além destes jardins, o parque inclui um horto botânico com uma estufa, onde se concentram espécies que necessitam de condições mais controladas, e um lago com plantas aquáticas que acrescenta frescura e tranquilidade ao espaço.
Espalhados pelo parque encontram-se também vários elementos ligados à tradição agrícola local, como um espigueiro, uma eira, tanques de água em granito e antigas estruturas de rega, que ajudam a compreender a relação histórica entre a paisagem, a agricultura e o rio.

It´s clearly a park designed to be used. You see families, people walking their dogs, running, or simply chatting, is well-maintained, peaceful space integrated into the life of the village. Ideal for strolling, relaxing by the river, or simply enjoying the gardens, it's a place that's always worth visiting.

É claramente um parque pensado para ser usado. Vêem-se famílias, pessoas a passear o cão, a correr ou simplesmente a conversar, é um espaço bem cuidado, tranquilo e integrado na vida da vila. Ideal para passear, descansar junto ao rio ou simplesmente aproveitar os jardins, é um lugar que vale sempre a pena visitar
